Don't know about others, but Civ3 just didn't grab me like Civ2. I even enjoyed Call To Power 1 & 2 more than Civ3.

Ack!!
Civ3 wasn't quite that bad, IMHO, but it wasn't as good as I had hoped...
I couldn't get into Civ3 either. I'll probably pick up the expansion and give it another go though. I understand that the expansion adds quite a bit to the game. There are some impressions posted over at gonegold.com

I got it already and it is sweet. It gives you a lot of new additions and if you didnt ever pick up the Play the World expansion which included multiplay its ok cause this new expansion includes all of the old one too. It's really a blast to play. The new scenario's it gives are amazing.

Skydog, I hadnt bough play the world...so bear that in mind.
1) They have added 15 new civilizations(including the pTw ones) your able to play and each have their own 'special unit'. I can't remember them all...mongolians, scandinavians, incans, celtics, i think carthigians, sumerians, mayans, dutch, hittites, portueguese, arabs, koreans, spanish, ottomans, vikings
2)New ways to win through wonders is one way
3)Book says Our designers recreate the great conquests of history. Battle for control of Mesopotamia in the Cradle of Civilization, or for the rich and vast resources in the Americas. There are also some World War 2 scenarios...one that I'm playing right now. 9 total.
4)A few new wonders
5)Some new techs...satellite is one(map the whole world)
6)new gov types...fascism, imperialism (i think), feudalism7)new ai strength modes
8)new civilization attributes (Agricultural and Seafaring)
Thats all I can think of offhand. Any other questions?

Cool. I might pick that up, since I didn't get PtW but would like the extra civs. I still play occasionally and like it, but bear in mind this was the first Civ game i ever got into. I tried Civ2 and took it back because I couldn't get into it (uh...I mean, it was incompatible with my computer).

I asked a few times at Apolyton this:
I come back to do my quarterly check and am still confused as to whether C3C will include event-driven scenarios. I tried to overlook the posts in this thread from those saying we don't need events or ignorant enough to not know what they are. But to clarify again, will we be able to - via a scripted events file:
- bring up a custom message box?
- add a specific unit(s) at a specific location?
- completely change the terrain at a specific tile?
- give you or an AI civ a specific tech, improvement or wonder?
- change the diplomatic status dynamically?
all based on a specific or random event that happened in the game?
but no one answered. I fully believe it's because the Civ3 forum is full of people that have no clue as to what real Civ scenarios are and have their brain's washed by Civ3 and its kludging, half-hearted attempt at designing a Civ game. So what. But can anyone answer these questions?

I have cable as well. Tried to play it once with my friend who also has cable and waited about a minute for a unit to move after instructing it to do so. I should download the most recent patch and give it another go.

Yep, the multiplayer was fixed in PtW with a later patch. I still hate playing it over the internet though since you never seem to finish a game before someone disconnects, but playing it with friends either on a LAN or over the internet if you know the person is fun. Such ashame my wife refuses to play Civ3 with me anymore :(

Even fully patched, PTW still gave me chronic "Out of Sync" problems over the LAN.
It makes no sense. I can play RON or AOE all the time on my home LAN with no problem.
If I get Conquests, It'll be for whatever single player offering it has. I've given up on Civ3 Multiplayer.

Franklin that sucks. It's fun when it works right.

Typically, I can get it to work for an hour or two... it seems like right about the time I hit the modern era, things crap out. So, yeah, it does suck, because I've already played most of the game, and had it die before I could finish.

Franklin, I imagine that may have a lot to do with the vast increase of worldwide units by that time.
