Yes, it's another wacky story from Georgia

GUYTON, Ga. - An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against South Effingham for a fan running onto the field during overtime proved costly Friday night, allowing third-ranked Swainsboro to escape with a 22-21 victory.

With the Mustangs ahead 21-14, Swainsboro was called for a holding penalty on fourth down-and-3 on the 8-yard line. The Mustangs appeared ready to pull off the upset, but they were penalized 10 yards after the fan ran on the field, carrying a sign that said, "Make some noise."

Instead of having the ball at South Effingham's 21-yard line, Swainsboro got the ball at the 11. Backup quarterback Leroy Ball, who was in the game for injured starter Cason Devane, threw a touchdown pass to Justin Moore and then ran for the 2-point conversion to clinch the Region 2-AAA title for the Tigers (6-0, 7-0-2).

Afterward, South Effingham coach Bob Herndon was furious as the Mustangs fell to 3-3 in the region and 6-3 overall.

"That should have never happened," Herndon said of the fan incident. "I'm extremely upset about that because our kids fought and gave a championship effort. We have a chance to win a football game and we have a nut who wants to run on the field. It's inexcusable."

Incidentally, several accounts of the game posted at GAVSV.com by fans indicate that it was an assistant coach who actually drew the penalty for coming onto the field, that two fans didn't come onto the field until afterwards.

That makes it a lot better. If they would've given the team a penalty for some fan running on to the field, that would've been complete bullshit

Agreed. Especially just one fan. Too easy for the fan of another team to 'sabotage' the other team by running onto the field to draw a penalty

Granted, that would have to be one dedicated (or drunk) fan but, still possible.
