View Full Version : A Guy Having Problems Getting On Board

I had the following conversation via PM's at the TPF board. Any ideas????

No clue. Gonna post this over at FOFC and see if anyone has any ideas. That link works fine for me though.

--Ben
Hey SkyDog, what's up with the fof board? Haven't been able to get on last night or today. Without the game being out yet it's one of my outlets to keep myself occupied:)

Thanks,
Al Wedebrand aka "Sweed"Hmmm.....I have no clue. It is working fine for me... What sort of message are you getting?

I have the board saved under my favorites in IE with this link

http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/~fof/forums/index.php?s=

I get the cannot find server page cannot be displayed

at the bottom of the page it says

"Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer"

I can get to here through my favorites but if I click on the forum link from here I also get the same cannot find server message

http://www.sportplanet.com/fof/

I was like this yesterday morning but came up in the afternoon so I thought maybe you guys were down for updating. Everything did work fine until yesterday. Great timing huh with the game due out soon :(

Any ideas?

Works fine for me. Possibly a problem with his ISP's DNS?

Edit: Does he get the same error going here: http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/

I've been having the same problems since yesterday. Sometimes the board is slow loading, other times it doesn't load at all. I've also had posts disappear and not be able to return to the board (including when I tried to post about these problems). I'm still able to be on half the time, but the board has been flaky for me during the last 36 hours.

same here, was fine from work, but unstable from home. Sometimes clicking on a thread would bring the "cannot find server" error, and sometimes it wouldn't even take my reply... Something is shaky with some DNS servers somewhere...

Boy, I have no CLUE how to solve this one. I've been on the board from home and office today, and both seem to work fien for me. Any thoughts?

I don't know how responsive gamespy is to issues like this, but you could ask them for help. Maybe one of their routers or servers is acting up.

Same thing here also.... To the point where I couldn't even access the board last night....

No problems at all yesterday and Sunday from home (I was home all day both days).

I haven't seen a problem either home or at work...

If the problem is really just a DNS that is acting funny somewhere, replacing the server name w/ the IP should work:

http://207.38.0.21/~fof/forums

works for me just the same as

http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/~fof/forums

does... a temporary workaround perhaps?

EDIT: you may need an additional slash at the end, doing the above seems to re-direct automatically w/ the name... if the above don't work for people having problems then also try:

http://207.38.0.21/~fof/forums/

Cool... note the edit above too :) not 100% sure which, if either, will work right.

The board has also been "flaky" for me from both home and work the last 2 days.

Radii, I'll try your fix tonight at home. Seems like it may be concentrated on the East Coast, based on the people reporting the trouble (NY, NJ, QC, but no problems in GA, CO, etc...)

Radii's solution doesn't work for me (it is either slow or doesn't work at all). And this is my 6th attempt at posting this message.

Yeah, the board has been iffy for me also. Either get slow loading, or that 500 error message.

The board is loading much slower for me in general, but I've only had sporadic problems loading and posting.

I can't access the board from work (getting the 500 error) and this is with using the IP adress, not gamespy.com (which is blocked by the office firewall), but from home it's no sweat at all. Weird.

Sounds like a DNS issue. Your home ISP is faster with updating their DNS than your office is.

A Big Thanks to all that tried to help. I just got on this minute. With the game due out soon I was getting a little antsy here.
I think I'll do some fast reading in case it crops up again, let's hope it doesn't.

FWIW I'm in the midwest, Iowa, to be exact. So for anyone that may need to know it is wider spread than the east coast. Don't know if that will be any help but thought I'd throw it in there.

Thanks again.

From about 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. MST, there was an "Internal Server Error" message every time I tried.

It would seem to be one, with the use of free proxys as the only solution for now for those who can't get on.

FWIW, I go through that periodically with this site, pretty much happens only during times that suffering high internet traffic (12p-1p, 3p-7p, etc)

I agree. This site is slow so often, that I wouldn't know if I had a problem. Can't complain about free hosting though. :D

John Galt
11-11-2003, 05:00 PM
This is different than normal slowness. Often you can't get in, even after refreshing 5 or 6 times and each time you try to post, it usually takes 4 or 5 efforts (and even then, it usually dumps you to an error screen).

Everything works fine again for me. Have any of the proxy users tried the board without proxy in the last half hour or so?

Ben E Lou
11-11-2003, 05:02 PM
Man, I had no idea that people were experiences (fairly) routine slowdowns.

Had only been using the proxy for a little over half an hour, but just tried it without and got nothing.

I couldn't get on from home last night, but could get on from work just fine.

I've also been having occasional problems with slow loading of the site, and have a few times had a "low on resources" window pop up while here. The low resources and lag time have only occured while at this site... so I'm not sure what the problem might be.

Question for those who know more about this stuff than me (and there are many of you):

Are the problems that several have mentioned likely related to Gamespy, to vbulletin, to forum traffic, to 'net traffic, to individuals' settings, or some combination of all of those factors?

Ryan S

I don't think this is a gamespy problem, but I am going to try and find out more

vbulletin - Doubt it, don't seem to have any problems with it.

forum traffic - Couldn't get it to work at 3 am, so I doubt it.

individual settings - Didn't change any settings, could get to to any Gamespy sites. Only change made was using a proxy and I could.

that leaves

Gamespy - without a proxy I couldn't get to any gamespy site. No forum, no FOFC mainpage, no Sportplanet, no gamespy, nothing. It seems odd that it would be a Gamespy problem, but that's what all signs point towards.

Skydog -- FWIW, I usually attribute the "slowdown" I see to a presumed combination of high traffic times & insufficient host capability to service the overall demand (across all their sites, not just FOFC)

Also, "slowdown" is a misnomer, at least in the case of what I'm referring to. It's not slow, it's completely inaccessable. The error message is the "unable to find DNS" pop-up, but it only appears when accessing FOFC, not any other site on the net. I've never kept a log of it or anything, but I'd guesstimate that I see this at least once a week, maybe a little more often

Next time it happens, would you mind trying to access something else on Gamespy?

It wasnt a dns problem, because I couldnt connect through the isp ethier.

I am leaning more towards a link in the chain so to speak, because using a different isp i could connect fine, but not my normal one. Oh well, everything is working fine now.
