View Full Version : Best football movie ever?
As Bee said in the "Worst..." thread, there aren't really that many "good" football movies.
But I saw "Brian's Song" (on DVD) for the first time yesterday, and was thrilled by the quality of acting, but even more so by the footage of real-life Gale Sayers highlights. He looked so good, I wasn't totally convinced it was real games being shown until I got it confirmed today.

MASH, the movie has some surprisingly good football scenes. ESPN once had a special reviewing football movies and a lot of ex-NFL players said they were the best football scenes they'd ever seen in a movie.
North Dallas Forty was pretty good too.
Paper Lion was also really good. They had sense enough to use the real Detroit Lions for the backdrop.

It took me some time but I now like Any Given Sunday a lot...The Replacemens was quite fun.
And "Rudy", although I saw it only once, was very cool.

Remember the Titans.
Rudy is pretty close. But Denzel's performance is wht breaks the tie.
Incidentally, Denzel is in both the Best Football and the Best Basketball movie (He Got Game).

I find it hard to imagine anyone who has seen "Hoosiers" could consider "He Got Game" to be the best basketball movie.
"He Got Game" was a cliche ridden piece of poo. Hooker with a heart of gold. Of course... What other kind of hookers are there?

Actually, I thought about Hoosiers when I said that. I happen to like He got Game much more. Also, the hooker doesn't have a heart of gold in the movie. She just a battered woman. Given the chance to turn her life around she does. Many battered women do.
Even based on a true story as it is, I think that Hoosiers hits more well-traveled territory. I'd still put it number one.
And we can probably agree that Blue Chips was the worst piece of garbage that ever masqueraded as a basketball movie. It was worse than Heaven is a Playground and One-on-One.

Definitely "Rudy" for me football-wise. "Hoosiers" wins out on the basketball front, closely followed by "The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh" :p

I like that Damon Wayans and Bruce Willis movie. I think it was the Last Action Hero or something like that. (More of an action movie than a football, but I still liked it) All of the ones mentioned above were good, but too sappy and bring me down more than they lift me up. Instead of feeling good after watching Rudy or Remember the Titans it always makes me wonder what the hell I am doing with my life.

Boo me out of the Stadium, but I belive "The Program" deserves an honorable mention.
I loved how The Program went full circle. The end of the movie left them right back to where they started.....The Circle of life.

You can agree! Blue Chips sucked my ass. Though the Shaq's scene in the English History class is a classic. It makes absolutely no sense or no point other than Shaq's character is very dumb.

I liked All the Right Moves because it was so similar to my own situation.

We walked around for months saying, "You are not God! You are a high school football coach!"
Still, love The Longest Yard and The Program. Those seem the most realistic.

Gotta give a shout out to Rudy, but what puts it over the top over Remember the Titans is that Titans is more about the race struggle than football, and has a clearly defined moral. Rudy makes you think a little more and celebrates the human spirit winning over any obstacle.

Without a doubt Rudy! What person who loves football doesn't dream to have 80,000+ chanting their name. Fantastic movie.
Remember the Titans was also a really good one.

I have to go with Rudy too. I can't stand a lot of things about Notre Dame, but everytime I see that movie it gives me goosebumps and brings me close to tears, and I've heard other people who dislike Notre Dame say the same thing. I think that says a lot about a movie.
I enjoyed Johnny B Goode, I thought it was a more entertaining than, say, Varsity Blues.

I think I'd have to go with Remember the Titans (although Pacino's speech from Any Given Sunday was cool)
For comedy, I remember laughing a lot during The Best of Times (Robin Williams and Kurt Russell)
