maybe i misunderstood, but a few people on the hattrick boards mentioned that some players loose abilities by being repositioned? like a player will play better if he is positioned in the actual midfielder slot rather than that same player being repositioned from say a defender position using the "extra midfielder" option.
is there any truth to this?

Well, for a player who is repositioned, you can't give individual orders. The only way they would lose abilities is if they have the skillset to be a very good offensive middie, and you put them as "Extra Inner Midfield," because then you can't utilize the "Offensive" strategy for his position.

i've always found that the guy i put in the 'extra' spot suffers about a half a star drop. And that is in addition to not being able to make him 'offensive' or 'defensive' or whatever

I don't know about a fixed loss in stars rating, but it is in the rule that a repositionned player is not as good as the same player playing normal in the regular position... From the rules:
When you reposition a player he will act as anyone of the players normally in that position would, apart from him not being able to completely optimize his game (heŽll contribute slightly less as an "Extra inner midfielder" than if he had been a real inner midfielder). This is because there will be too many players in the same place, getting under each others feet.
I have not tested putting too many different player in the "extra IM" position. I usually my player with the best combined secondary skills. I have one IM with both inadequate passing and defending and another with both solid passing and defending ( :) )

so would you want your best player or worst player repositioned?
i could see you saying the best player could loose a little and still play good or that your worst player has less to loose.

My regular starters are the following:
#1 excellent playmaker w/inadequate passing & wretched defending
#2 excellent playmaker w/poor passing & inadequate defending
#3 high solid playmaker w/inadequate passing & defending
I play #1 offensive (gain on passing, lose on defending with nothing to lose), #2 defensive (same thing with defending), and #3 as the extra since I don't want to gain on something and lose the same thing on the other side...
Hope I make sense...

SaintJo - I think it doesn't really matter, skill wise...you're still losing the same amount of production no matter who it comes from. Just make sure you're not repositioning a guy who could play better with "Offensive" or "Defensive" individual orders.

dola, what I'm saying is that I'm playing my players' strengths...
If my third was a similar playmaker with only weak passing and defending, I'd probably play him as the extra, not much to gain on playing him offensive or defensive... I like special orders a lot, I think you can see that :)

I was told that the player "repositioned" lost 10% of their skill for that match.

Which is why it is best to put your worse player in the extra spot.

is there any truth to this? Not only is it true, Bjorn has said that people generally underestimate the magnitude of the penalty.
I prefer to put my weakest player in the reposition spot, because I figure it's probably a percentage penalty rather than a fixed deduction.
