Another Big East team has made overtures to two conferences about possibly joining them in all sports.

This time, it's Notre Dame.

A front page story on USA Today says the Fighting Irish may be ready to discard their independent status to become a member of either the ACC or Big 10.

Apparently, the Irish are scared about losing their guaranteed BCS spot and lucrative TV contract with NBC, and have begun talking with the two conferences to see if they can get in before next year's reshuffle.

Not Surprised.

My guess is B10 with lots of leeway in football schedule.

We don't want them. Hell, I'd rather them be looking for someone to take Ohio State.

ACC doesn't make sense because it would give them 13 teams.

Big 10 makes sense. I'm not sure that the BCS scenario is their incentive. Moving to a conference makes getting to the BCS Bowls harder for Notre Dame.

As far as the TV contract, I've heard that Fox has approached them about taking over the contract once NBC's run is over. Either way, I hope they move to the Big 10. Maybe they can beat Indiana or Northwestern.

I think within 5 years every conference is going to merge with all the others making one big "superconference". That seems to be the tendency. Making they can call it the Microsoft Conference or something...

One of the more popular rumors out there is that there will be 60 or 64 teams in a "Super Division 1" within a decade. I've heard the 6 10 team conferences and the 4 16 team conference theories. Who knows. The 16-team conferences would be screwy.

They could play Penn State every year and call it the Schools-Past-Their-Time Bowl. That would be fun.

Of course, Notre Dame wasn't the first team approached for their own TV contract. Guess who was?

I wouldn't worry too much. It comes down to Money and Notre Dame presently doesn't have to share any of their football money. I think it depends on two things:

A) Can they get into the BCS Bowls being an independent and

2) How much is another station willing to pay them for exclusive rights
