So far, I've noticed that the game MVP is working nicely. That's great news. I know it bear no real importance, but at least that little annoyance is G-O-N-E. And if nothing else, the worst case scenario is that it's vastly improved for the first time ever. :)

You mean the game MVP is no longer the losing QB who threw 4 INTs along with those 300 yards? WOW! I hope my old lady lets me play this weekend!

I agree, I have been comforted by what I've seen there, too. FAR fewer losing QBs getting the nod.

Right, especially in the superbowl so he gets that superbowl mvp label his whole career.

What about player of the week, are they picking the truly best performers each week?

Well,
Week #1 for me and they picked Gary Walker, DE, Houston who had 5 tackles including 4 sacks. Marcus Truant, CB, Seattle had 2 Int's, one for a TD. Both teams won their games...Houston 20-5 and Seattle 34-0.
But those were the two most notable defensive performances, stat-wise.
On offense,
QB Timothy Bush, Indy replacing Peyton Manning won the award.
He was 24-32, 243 yds, 2 TD, 0 Int in a winning performance.
That was tied for the best TD to Int ratio (no QB's had more than 2 TD's and 2 others had 2 TD's and 0 Int's). David Carr and Kerry Collins. Collins managed 323 yards, but who cares, looks fair enough.
Questionable would be the running backs who put up more impressive numbers with Priest Holmes rushing for 173 yards a 1 TD and Michael Pittman getting 167 and 2 TD's. Corey Dillon had 111 yards rushing and 90 more receiving but no TD's.
Arguable, but hey, it's arguable! That's better than before, and that's not up for argument. :)
