View Full Version : In honour of hockey heritage day tommorrow.....
I will play a game of FoF outside tommorrow :)
(For those of you that don't know...the nhl has scheduled an outdoor league game tommorrow in a football stadium in Edmonton)

It's minus 36 tonight in Edmonton. Forecast for tomorrow is -17 and with the wind chill about -27. Rough for hockey, but I've played in worse. It would be hard to sit there just watching it though. I'm glad it's on TV. :)
BTW, if they think the weather is not ideal enough to play, they have plans to play the NHL game on Sunday afternoon in Rexall Place (new name for skyreach). The oldtimers game is on no matter what though.

That's really cool that they're playing a game outside.
Who's playing?

Edmonton and Montreal.
The old timers are old time Edmonton/Montreal guys. See the list above.
The game will be on here in Brussels. I plan to catch some of it. Hate to miss an even like this.

Getting the CBC feed through Centre Ice on DirecTV at my house. Unfortunately, I will be at work during the MegaStars game, and then at an ECHL game during the EDM/MON game. I hope they are good ones. The VCR will be running (yes, no Tivo in the house...yet).

Thats funny that the game will be on in Belgium, but not available in the States. Thank god for living close enough to Canada to get CBC.

Indicative of what is wrong with TV in the United States. It's on in the US, but only if you have the NHL Centre Ice package with your cable or satellite provider. ESPN probably could have had the rights, but would rather put on college football (no doubt the ratings are probably better). Besides that, I am 100% positive that CBC is going to pull it off better than ESPN would.

Oh, yeah, CBC is head and shoulders above ESPN when it comes to hockey coverage. I can't remember the last time I watched a hockey game on ESPN.

Too bad the American broadcasting companies believe that only Canadians are interested in this game... :(

Unfortunately the American broadcasting companies have the statistics to prove basically just that. It's shameful.

Actually, most of the statistics I have seen indicate that the networks with national contracts do a bad job. The viewership is split amongst all the other feeds, and NHLCI viewers are never counted in the ratings. If I watch a team's every single game, it would never be counted even if I were part of the research (unless I watched every Thrasher game televised locally). There is no data that says people in the US do not like to watch hockey. There is really just data that says people in the US don't like watching hockey on ESPN, ABC, or Fox. Any real hockey fans I know never watch ESPN once they can get the NHLCI package. ESPN is inferior to the CBC and Sportsnet, and oddly enough TSN as well (even though they own a significant percentage of TSN).
ESPN thinks people don't like hockey on TV, so they fulfill that prophecy by doing a poor job selecting games, a poor job of production, a poor job during intermissions, and so on. They are even inferior to what is happening on most local feeds throughout the US. That's why their ratings suck.

Michigan and MSU played an outdoor game a couple of years ago - it was a pretty huge success.

I'd kill to see the game. Unfortunately, I won't be able to. Wonder if anyone is going to encode it and float it around online...

I'd never heard that explanation before, Tekneek, but it certainly makes sense. Why haven't the media caught onto that? I'm not into conspiracy theories, but...
And why isn't "Gretsky" in the dictionary? If Trotsky can make it, I think the Great One should too. :D

I don't mind ESPN's coverage, but it doesn't hold a candle to HNIC.
my wife and I made our plans today out of watching these games - should be fun.

What does SkyDog have to do with hockey coverage?
;)
Oh, and GO OILERS!!! :)

Yeah, I can't wait to see this. All those Oiler greats that made me like hockey in the first place. :D
It was funny, on another sports channel here, some guy said that to make this a true NHL Heritage game, if it's too cold or there's too much snow on the ice during the actual NHL game, everyone should have to dress warmer, and get shovels to get rid of the snow. :D That would make it seem like a TRUE outdoor game. Nothing gets in the way of hockey. ;)
This is so damn cool..... I'll be watching both games today....

did you watch?
during the old-timers game, they all grabbed shovels during the intermission and cleaned off the ice. Refs included. It was pretty cool.

It was bloody cold out there, but a lot of fun. Was great to see all the old Oilers back again. The organizers did a great job!
And did I mention how bloody cold it was...?

:D:D:D. All hockey games should be like that. On to the game.. I thought Fuhr and Ranford made a couple of nice saves. That glove save by Fuhr was extremely nice. Glad to see he can still do it. ;)

Heritage CLASSIC. Awesome game.
Our (Calgary's) biggest rivals put on an incredible show. Great job, Edmonton.

I havn't seen any video yet, was the ice size bigger than the regulation size inside the arena?
Just the mental image of outdoor hockey in a stadium is sort of fields of dreamish in a hockey sort of way.

But you got college football instead. Don't you prefer that? :p
I have not watched the video yet, but I recorded it all.

You didn't even know who was playing. Why so upset? ;)
I watched the first period of the Montreal-Edmonton game (thank you, NHL Center Ice!). The rink looked regulation to me. I missed the MegaStars game because I was at the Superdome at the time. Anyway, it was interesting to watch, but I hope they don't try to do this type of thing again too soon. It was a very special event, and I'd prefer it if they didn't dilute the significance of it by trying to overdo the idea.
Still, great stuff.
WWO!...that was fun.....it made the 2nd game of the double header sooo boring.....I think ALL nhl games should be played outdoors now:)

Boy...it was cold...but, I dressed for it and brought appropriate refreshments and would sit out there for twice as long if I had to!!!
The Megastars were fun to watch...just too short...I wanted to relive more of my childhood pretending to be Gretzky or Fuhr while playing road hockey in the driveway with my little brother...man, what a day!!!
I still haven't watched the CBC broadcast, but I'm anxious to...would like to see all the behind the scenes stuff and interviews they did throughout the day.
