Class act by american players to agree to share the cup until next contest. Too dark to continue after three playoff holes between Tiger and Ernie. Best possible result.

I dont understand why they dont follow the same rules the Ryder Cup does. For a team to outright win the cup they need to defeat the other team. So a tie should have went to the Americans. The tie is very anticlimatic. But this is a fun format to watch. I really enjoy watching match play, and seeing the strategy the golfers use.

In my opinion the Ryder Cup rule is horrible. The rules for the President's Cup were set up to ensure a winner through a playoff. Unfortunately, South Africa's time zone meant they pushed the matches late in the day to appease the money grubbing media. Otherwise there would have been lots of time to etablish a winner.

I think sharing the Cup is much better than retaining it with a tie. I don't mind a playoff, but I don't think it should be sudden death between two players.

If you watched the ending on TV, you heard Jack say that if they agreed to quit in a tie, the US would retain the Cup. At that point, Els and others, said that if that was the case, they choose not to quit. This change in attitude (entirely understandable, I should think) led to the further discussion and gesture from the US squad.
