View Full Version : Making the best of an injury

As some of you know, I had some nice plans for 32 year old Herman 'Moggis' Lewblom, the current winger starter for the Dragons, with solid winger skills and passable passer skills. While Moggis was a force on teh wing attack of the team, he also had (and still has) passable experience with passable leadership. The plan was to let him play and hope he would pop to solid experience, in order to make him the next coach of the team, in fact replacing my current passable coach who has only weak leadership...

As faith would have it, Moggis was never meant to become a solid coach, as he suffered a severe injury, the +6 kind, one of the worst... We had a full 700k U$ ready to make him our solid coach when the day would come, but we decided that his passable leadership was to nice for the team spirit, so we spent the 260k U$ to make him our coach...

However, that injury showed us how dependant of him we had become, as the team's second winger is only a passable winger and inadequate passer. With about 440k U$ in the bank, an enormous amount for me who is more accustomed to be in the red, we went shopping... Sverige, Danmark, Nederlands, were all places we visited, but we found the next Dragon in Chile, this fine fellow was acquired for 408k U$...

Gheorghe Bănică (4205333)
23 years, inadequate form, healthy
A sympathetic guy who is calm and honest.
Has weak experience and poor leadership abilities.

Speciality: Powerful

Nationality: România
Assessed value: 374 000 C$
Wage: 4 032 C$/week including 20% Bonus
Owner: Cerio's Dragons FC
Warnings: 0

Stamina: formidable Goaltending: disastrous
Playmaking: inadequate Passing: poor
Winger: excellent Defending: passable
Scoring: wretched Set Pieces: inadequate

He is a major departure from the usual old geezer the dragons are used to buy and should be with the club for many games to come. :D

Here's the usual question: how do you rate this buy? Overpaid, got a deal, about market price? Thanks for your comments.

I think it's a nice buy, although I'd rather have passing than defending. If played offensively, that passable defending is basically useless, and with the current game engine Offensive or TM are the only orders I would consider for a winger. I'd be interested in knowing what he could put up as an offensive wingback in a 3-5-2 on the same side as your central defender.

I would play him as an offensive wingback too

Thanks for the comments. I know his passing leaves a little to be desired, but I sort of liked his inadequate playmaking when played on the wing.

And don't worry, he will definitely get his shot as an offensive wingback :)

Just an opinion . . .

I don't know pricing very well so I have no clue about value. We have a couple of folks on board who tend to have a good grasp of price tags so they'll probably comment on it later. I shall watch and learn.

The excellent winger skill will be a nice boost to the offense on that side. I seem to remember a few good passing inner midfielders on the Dragons so he'll make a nice pairing with those folklets.

I don't remember Moggis' playmaking skill but Bănică's inadequate playmaking with formidable stamina is always a welcomed boost. Besides, if you so choose, you should be able to more than make the money back when he pops inadequate experience and passable playmaking.

As far as the Poor Passing-vs-Passable Defense goes, eh. (Yes, I'm still the same fool who constantly defends the Passing skill.) When the HT God gives you a Bănică to replace a broken winger, you make some of those lemonade. Or however that cliche goes. The Passable Defense skill does open up a NUMBER of different interesting options, however. I seem to recall a few Dragons inner midfielders with better defensive skills than passing. If you pair one of those guys playing Defensive with Bănică playing Normal, you can play them on the "naked" side (the 3-5-2 side without the centreback). This is my standard setup with Chadwick and Miggie. This gives that wingback a LOT of coverage and can make that defensive side about even with the other. Another option is to play Bănică on Normal in front of Boom playing Offensive while he's covered by a centreback. Options! Choices!

All in all, a good buy that should help the Dragons. Especially in a bind. :)

wow, daed, you know my team pretty well :) Thos AIM sessions have gone right to your brain ;)

Yeah, I have either Brigg or Gröönborn who are both solid passers and yeah they'll pair quite well with Bănică. I also have Rossten who's an inadequate passer who could fit well too...

Same thing about the defending middies, Brigg (again) is also a solid defender so he could be used in that sense if needed.

Finally, I agree with the number of options that his passable defending skill bring, although, I would probably me more comfortable with him up at the wing and Boom (solid wing/passable defense) as teh offensive wingback, simply because of his inadequate playmaking and nice stamina, compared to Boom's only poor playmaking skill...

I also would have wanted to get a wniger with more passing, but most of them were selling for much more, or all had disastrous experience. Get that winger training started that we start getting some better wingers out there ;)

A note on Moggis. While it's true that he was +6 before I turned him into my coach, he magically became healthy once I made him the coach... Yep, no more injuries. I knew all of that before I bought Bănică, don't worry, but I also had the extra money, now I have two strong wingers I can probably use at the same time, until Moggis get killed again :)

I think he will be a fine offensive winger. He will contribute enough to the midfield and since his best skill is winger, you got to use him where it will be taken advantage of. His passing is like the 4th thing factored into the attack rating on his side so I wouldn't worry at all.

True dat. My wingers are a passable wing/solid PM and a solid wing/excellent PM who get 3/3.5 stars either Offensive or Towards Middle. It's good because it gives me a good midfield boost, and meshes well with my 2-5-3 AIM scheme, but if I get in a league with comparable teams, I really can't throw out an AOW. It seems that most good teams don't have stud offensive wingers but rather playmaking ones too.

yeah, there are plenty of excellent wingers out there, but they are all 18 or 19 with no secondarie and disastrous experience. That disastrous experience, while it doesn't really lowers the player's performance, seems really pale in comparison to another player with weak or even inadequate exerience.

I hope to play this kid enough to boost him to at least passable experience... He'll get double duty as long as we're in the cup, which may be for only this week, but still :)

Boom's skill set isn't really optimized for playing winger full-time.

Normal instead of offensive? ;)

Defense meant next to nothing last year, and only slightly more this year. I'd run an 0-6-4 if the rules allowed it. If you want defense and offense from that side, putting the WB defensive and Banica offensive will probably accomplish the same thing, if not better, than WB Offensive and W Normal.

Not without losing training. Maybe I'll try it in the offseason anyway :D

I like defense. Yes, I know Hattrick bends defense over and don't bother with lube. I still like defense. I like what defense can do for me. I also like knowing that I don't have to worry that my opponent will exploit the hole in my defense as occurs in a Hattrick 3-5-2. With what little talent I have on my team, this particular system work best.

If it doesn't work that way for you, it's all good. Hope you find what works best for you.
