Didn't see a post of this one.

Cubs get Derek Lee, Marlins get Hee Seop Choi and a player to be named.

Liking it for the Cubbies. I'm just not seeing Choi reach the potential everyone says.

I agree - this should be good for Chicago. It seems an odd deal for Florida, unless they're getting good talent in the PTBN.

Hmm... This sounds familiar. They a young team getting even younger and can still make make a run at the playoffs next year. I highly doubt that they will repeat, though.

Not quite.

That time, they bought the expensive people for the sole purpose of winning that serie. Even though a pretty good minor league system was being built. This time, they didn't do that. Rodriguez was the only FA of significance they brought in. And at a "cut" rate, at that. They happened to have won through slow building.

Also, they had been planning on moving Lee all along. They even considered it last year. They were actually trying to bring Rodriguez back, although I don't think they want to pay him what he is wanting. Lowell is as much a cost-cutting move as the fact that Cabrera has shown that he's ready to play.

I like Choi, and the scouting reports of him suggest he could become a stud.

But Derrek Lee hit .271/.379/.508 with 31 HRs (in a pitchers park) and 92 RBI. Also he stole 21 bases and won a gold glove. I really like the deal from the Cub's part. When you have as good pitching as we do, having good defense makes it even better and with Lee's defense at first and his bat in the lineup I think we've become a far better team. And he's only 28 years old so it's not like we're trading for a veteran on his decline.

I'm just about ready for the season to start again...

Neuqua, you'd like Jose Offerman if he was traded to the Cubbies

Oh please, I really hope you're not accusing me of homerism.

I agree with Neuqua. It's a great trade for the Cubs, in my opinion. The ONLY downside to getting Lee that I can think of is that he's right-handed and they really need a lefty to break up that middle of the lineup. But that's if I want to get real nitpicky.

I still think they need to find a leadoff hitter to set the table because a row of thumpers won't be enough to do it. I haven't heard them connected with Luis Castillo but he'd make a good match for them. Especially since they managed to ship Bobby Hill out of town last year as a PTBNL without much fanfare.
