View Full Version : OT: Harry Potter 3, Ms. Watson and others

This is probably going to sound like a strange post. I have been a fan of Harry Potter, reading the first two books and just finished watching the movies again. As we talked about before, I like what Ebert said about Ms. Emma Watson: "in the early stages of babedom". I found this to be esp. true in the second movie of course. So I was curious as to see what she looks like now and found a new clip of the third movie. Needless to say, I was disappointed. I expected her to be a gangling teen and that's fine but they had to ruin her looks by slathering on ugly eyeshadow and horrible looking lipstick (at least imo). Other than that, I am constantly amazed as to the brilliant casting of Daniel Radcliffe. I know it's hindsight but I think he had been much better choice than Speilberg's kid, Haley Joel Osmot. Also in the clip, it looks like the new Dumbledore will make an easy transition.

Saw the (a) clip on the news a few weeks ago. The new Dumbledore does look like a solid choice. If she doesn't hurry up with the last two books the kids will be in their mid-twenties in the last film.

Isn't this the last Harry Potter movie that these three kids are going to make? I believe that they're recasting for the next films... can anyone confirm this?

Hadn't heard anything about that. If they do that is horrible. If they make an effort they could easily get these done before they have to recast.

Recasting them would be a horrible idea, IMO. They better not.
But, the big question is Why no Potter this month?
I still can't believe they would rather go against the summer blockbuster events and miss all the Group family time outings for the holidays.

NO!!!! They better not re-cast after this film!
Hey Bucc, speakig of gangly teenagers, did you see young Malfoy in the clip? Yikes!

Hmm the picture they have on the leaky cauldron site doesn't seem like she looks any different than before, but you can see Malfoy hit his growth spurt.

If they do not recast, Ms. Watson will have children in Harry Potter 7.

I recall seeing in several places that they are cast for the next movie but none after that. The problem is that they went with a 2 year break between movies (more complexity to film) but the books, I assume, are only one year sequences.

First of all, you objecting to the appearance of a woman (young or otherwise) for looking too "made up" certainly doesn't qualify as a "strange post" - it's precisely what we've come to expect from you, you old codger. I didn't see anything in the stills you posted to rail about - but that's certainly your prerogative.
On a related note, I saw a promo for some unctious-sounding TV movie with Valerie Bertinelli recently - you might want to check that out. Hopefully she still passes your non-bulimic test.

Oh my... didn't she look terrible? I was horrified with the closing shot in that commerical. The looks are gone.

That is a shame. One of the great jokes in my family is that little girl was the reincarnation of my wife at that age. Both sides of the family have gotten together and we spend the whole time watching the movie declaring how she looks almost identical to my wife when she was a little girl. Luckily for me, my wife turned out pretty good. Maybe she will too.
It is eerie though watching it.

That and 17 million other men and women all over the world. Lol. Seriously, I think it always has been an attraction in viewing TV/movie child stars and seeing them grow up before your eyes, wondering what they are going to look like. Not just Ms. Watson but all of the other kids as well.

I heard they may recast due to the fact that these kids are 13 and they do not want to take their teenage years from them..but hey..you offer me millions you can have my teenage years.

Well, if that was an attack, then you supplied all the ammo. You've been very forceful in criticizing other people's tastes in womenfolk here before - regularly arguing that you think all these women wear too much makeup, in particular. For you to add one more name to youur list of "too made up" celebrities just isn't that much of a shock, no matter what you think. I'm not sure what "spirit of the topic" I missed... you spent four sentences talking about Ms Watson's appearance.
As for the movies in general (I presume this is what you'd like me to focus on instead), I'd offer this:
- I just re-viewed of the movies also, and felt that #1 held up far better than #2 did, for some reason
- I'm disappointed that we don't have movie #3 in theaters now, rather than in the summertime
- While I understand the desire to keep the same actors, it was already clear fromm movie #2 that two out of three kids (excepting Ron) are already showing signs of being a bit too old -- if they have to replace them for future films, that's better than seeing far-too-old actors just for the sake of continuity, in my book
- I disagree about Radcliffe, to some degree, and while I agree that he certainly looks the part, I feel that he has practically no acting skills -- save the open-mouthed awestruck/happy/shocked look he is called on to give about twelve times a movie

So? Just a simple disagreement with my opinion "I didn't see anything in the stills you posted to rail about" would have sufficed instead of admonishing me for having an (unpopular) opinion.

I agree, I think #1 was much more fun to watch than #2. Part of it could be the story where we are introduced to the wonders of that world (along with the characters) as oppose to having one bad thing happen after another in #2. Although they are in the book, I felt that the scene with Aragog/spiders was too distracting and extreme (the small bit of info could have been given easier) and I felt that the ending monster chase with the basalisk was too cliched and lacked all of the drama and intensity of #1's ending.
- I'm disappointed that we don't have movie #3 in theaters now, rather than in the summertime
I agree. Even though filming has ended (it was started at the first of the year), they have a tremendous amount of post-production (re: special effects) to work on. If not Christmas, early Spring could have worked.
- While I understand the desire to keep the same actors, it was already clear fromm movie #2 that two out of three kids (excepting Ron) are already showing signs of being a bit too old -- if they have to replace them for future films, that's better than seeing far-too-old actors just for the sake of continuity, in my book
That's interesting for Ron is now 15, Dan is 14 and Emma is 13. In #2, I thought Ron was the only one too old.
- I disagree about Radcliffe, to some degree, and while I agree that he certainly looks the part, I feel that he has practically no acting skills -- save the open-mouthed awestruck/happy/shocked look he is called on to give about twelve times a movie [/B]
I thought it was certainly better than Ron's constant "scared" look he had the whole time in #2. Radcliffe even said that in #1 he was just reacting to events while being more proactive in #2. From the first two books, I don't recall Potter being much more complex than the way he was played.

The rumours that they will be replaced are just that right now. We'll see when it comes. Why in the world would it be a problem for them to continue in characters that are supposed to age when we see the same 20-30 year olds play as high-school kids movie after movie.

dola: Emma in the link still looks very cute but also very, very young. She has a while to grow before she could be called (or should be considered) hot.

For the record, I think she's homely.
And the second movie was a complete bore compared to the first.

Bucc, I owe you an apology.
Really, all I meant with my first post in this thread was to point out what I thought was an absurd beginning to your thread, with the statement "This is probably going to sound like a strange post." My main point there was that coming from you (the acknowledged curmudgeon) the complaints about makeup didn't seem strange at all.
But you're right to be defensive about my post, because it did have a more negative and critical tone than I had really intended. Sorry to come off as "attacking" you and your opinion... really all I wanted to do was to comment on your opening phrase there... but I got a little bit too mean in the process.
Sorry.

QS: Now I feel bad, I didn't mean to have you come up with a public apology. It's funny, all I meant from my opening statement was making an OT thread about Harry Potter, esp. coming from me and amidst all of the FOF talk. But you are right about criticizing makeup, it's just one of my pet peeves.
GrantDawg: Which is why Ebert said "...early stages of babedom". She's not there yet (not until 18 imo) but now I am not to sure. She does seem to have a good head on her shoulders from hearing comments about her interviews.

Babe, I've been turned down by much better looking (and bigger stars) than you.
Besides, another two or three years and you'll be happy to be on QVC, much less a little radio program. :)

Hmm, I must be the only one disappointed this thread had nothing to do with Emily Watson (no, I have no knowledge of the Potter books/movies, nor of Emma Watson).
And Valerie Bertinelli hit the wall a couple of years ago...

LOL... yes.
I wonder, maybe Emily Watson wants a role in OotP (that's Order of the Pheonix, not Out of the Park, btw ;)).

Emma was an inspired casting choice for Hermione - she's cute, but not too cute (i.e. Natalie Portman circa Beautiful Girls or Leon [aka The Professional]). She appears to be growing into her looks, which follows with the storyline in the books. I'll be curious to see who they get for the Cho Chang role. Radcliffe is improving, and as the stories get more complex his growing experience should match the growth of the character.
I think it would be a mistake for the filmmakers to intentionally re-cast the series after the 3rd movie - so long as the kids want to continue in the roles, they should be retained. It is too bad that the delay was introduced in the 3rd movie such that they are no longer on an every-year cycle, but I don't think the possibility of 20 year old actors playing 17 year old characters is too off-putting.
If the actors want a break I could certainly understand - they've all had to essentially forego traditional schooling and the associated socializing, and there is the natural fear as an actor of becoming hopelessly typecast. Still, this has been a well-adapted series of films thus far and it would be nice to see as much continuity as possible in the performers.
