Pedro and Schilling, thats a pretty damn awesome 1-2 punch come Playoff time.

Pedro/Schilling/Lowe/Wakefield/Kim?

Probably one of if not the best starting rotation in the league.

If Pedro is in the mood to pitch.

THey better win the damn ring this year, or else theres going to be a lot of turnover from teh roster after next year. Bye bye Nomar.

Rumor is that they're working a way to do the Manny-Arod deal, and thenm deal Nomar out west to rebuild their farm system, which would free up enough to get Foulke.

I heard that too, but from what I'm reading, the Rangers aren't too keen on getting Manny.

They could throw in 30 vestal virgins and they
aint getting ARod back for Manny, no way, no how.
Not unless Tom Hicks is a total idiot..........................

Apparently, the sox would kick in $5-10 mill a year to help pay for Manny, and ARod is really pressuring Hicks to make the deal

Not that I know alot about the Redsox, but Pedro didn't impress me one bit in the playoffs this year. I think his ratings curve has started downward.

The term, "Do or Die" should be the Redsox catch phrase next year.

value-wise i'd stick with Nomar. he's the kind of player who can stick with the same team throughout his career, like Jeter will be a lifelong Yankee.

c'mon, every team has to have an identity.what's A-rod gonna give you? 20 more homers? infinite more millions in salary? the return isn't that great. it's not like the Mets replacing Rey Ordonez with A-Rod. this isn't apples and oranges - we're talking replacing an apple with a slightly bigger apple. a bigger apple that costs $25million a year.

Up until about the 100 pitch mark Pedro is still the best in baseball, its just that he seems to get hammered on every pitch after that.

Here's the trade as reported on TV

(it may not happen till XMas, because they have to work out the exact prospects, but the exact quote was that they were "Beyond the exploratory phase" of trade talks, meaning a framework for the deal has likely been reached)

Three Team Deal: Texas, SD and Boston

Boston gets: A-Rod and Prospects (from San Diego)
San Diego Gets: Nomar
Texas gets: Manny and Prospects (from Boston)

With the economics of baseball the way the are right now, no team, except probably the Yankees, is going to be able to take on A-Rods contract and remain a legit contender. There are some teams that could take his contract for a year or 2, but you have to remember that his contract has 7 more years left on it. If the Red Sox did get him they would have to make some tough decisions on the rest of their club. Some players like Lowe, Wakefield, Varitek, and other key members would have to leave when they become free agents. A-Rods contract will cripple any team's future plans.

herd: by losing Manny and Nomar's contracts, they'd actually SAVE 7-8 million a year on contracts, which likely will be used on Foulke, and it would keep payroll flexibility for Lowe et all

I'm all for any team in the AL getting better and finally knocking off the Yankees. But I'm not as optimistic about the long team prospects for any team with $25 million tied up into one player for the next 7 years. If it works out in the long term for the Red Sox, then thats great, they're the only American League team I even have a slight bit of fondness for.

It's a good move for Schilling but he's 37 and only pitched half a season this year. I don't see him pitching much at 39 or 40.

As far as the 3-team trade rumours (the one with the Pads), that certainly would be interesting. Even though I have heard that Nomar's skills are declining, he would fill a big hole the Pads always had. Hopefully Kahlil Greene can move over to 2nd if this goes through.

Bucc: But they weren't the type of injuries that indicate "old pitcher" on the downhill. I mean, the appendix? :)

As a die hard Red Sox fan, I whole heartedly agree.

They need to spend that money on Vladimir, and let him hack away at the Green Monster with Trot Nixon at DH.

:D

Schilling pitched lot of innings in 2002. He was getting hammered even at the start of '03, before his big health problems.

If the Rangers give up A-Rod for Manny without getting at lest half of Manny's salary covered, then Hicks is a bigger moron than people have been saying for the last two years.

oykib: funny thing is, his ERA was down in 03, IIRC

But he then broke his hand in June.

I'm talking about the last month or so of '02 and the first month or so of '03. At the end of '02 he allowed Johnson to blow by him for the Cy Young with a string of mediocre perfomances. I believe he had some uncharacteristically bad starts at the beginning of '03 as well.

I haven't researched it and I'm not a D-Backs fan. So I could be wrong.

I think it was a poor attempt to lure Red Sox fans into thinking Schilling had been traded.
