This is my first attempt at a dynasty, but I thought it might be one that would interest people around here. It will describe the happenings for a High School basketball team that I'm coaching.

Some background on me
I am currently 21 years old, newly graduated from college, and soon to be liscenced as a teacher. In High School, I belonged to a youth group. This youth group has a basketball league which I participated in. For the past three summers I have acted as a camp counselor at the youth group's camp. Now that I have graduated I act as an occasional chapperone for a few of the chapters in the area.

How I ended up coaching the team
On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, I was chapperoning the youth group's biggest dance of the year. At this dance, I ran into the father of someone who had been my best friend in Junior High and High School (but who I don't really ever talk to anymore). As we were talking he told me that he was coaching both of the teams from my old chapter (he had coached the team when his son and I were on it). One thing led to another and suddenly I had agreeded to coach the team that he doesn't have a son on, the Gray team.

Why this dynasty is titled as it is
Quite simply both of the teams stink. It used to be that there was a junior/senior team and a freshman/sophomore team, but evidently a couple youth directors back (my old chapter is on its 3rd director in 4 years) decided this wasn't fair (as obviously the junior/senior team always did better) and mixed it up. Ever since both teams have stunk. This year they have played one game and both teams lost. The other team (team Red) lost by "only" 24 points, while my sad sack of a team lost by 32.

Further, the community center that the teams had practiced in for years, no longer is allowing them to practice there. The whole explanation is quite unclear as to why. So despite needing "a million practices in a row" as my friend's father put it, we are SOL.

Finally, the next game is Monday (two days from now) and I only know who two of the players on the team are. It's possible I know more players on the team, but I haven't gotten a roster or anything fancy like that. One of the players on the team, to put it nicely, is a klutz. I fear that he might be one of the better players on the team.

Why all is not as hopeless at it might seem
There are a few small glimmers of hope that I'm hanging on to, right now. First is that I might be able to get us a practice space. As I noted above, I am about to become a real teacher and am currently student teaching at an elementary school. I place the odds at about 50/50 that the principal will agree to let us use the gym at night. The youth director for the chapter had tried all the area schools, (including the one I'm teaching in), but since I know people I hold out a little more hope, especially since the principal is surprisingly unconcerned about liability. Additionally I know someone in the Park District, and might be able to talk them into letting me use a Park District Gym, but I place the odds of this at about 1 in 10. Also, in a bit of luck, I had Thanksgiving dinner with soemone who teachers kindergarten at our old practice place and who has a good relationship with the guy not letting us use the gym. She has promised to talk to him. I have no idea what the result of this will be.

There are a couple of good points on the player front as well. At this same dance I had been talking to a mother of another friend of mine from High School, who told me that her son recently quit the basketball team there. He is reportedly burned out from basketball, but I am hopeful I can convince him that player in this league will be fun (which it is). I say I have about a 1 in 5 chance of getting him. Additionally, another guy I know upon hearing how bad the team is, and that I will be the coach, sorta said he would be willing to play. He is a solid ballplayer and I would love to have him on the team. The other player that I know is a pretty talented guard. A fairly selfish player, but still good. I have a real good relationship with him so I'm hoping that his skills will outweigh his cons. Especially since...

My Strategy
I plan on playing as boring of a game of basketball as is possible. If the final score is 20-18 that would be just great by me. I think this works well on a psychological level and on a practical level. I think it'll be a real problem to try and implement this, especially with-out any practices, but going into Monday's game that's my strategy.

In our next installment, I will go over our players as well as the results of our first game. Hopefully there will be some good news about a practice space. Comments and suggestions (either about the team or the dynasty) are very welcome.

The Roster

Well I have now met our troops and am pleasantly, VERY pleasantly, surprised. Even without one of my recruits we look to be in fairly good shape for this league. Presenting Team Brown in alphabetical order.

Andrew
CommentsThis is one of the two kids I knew on the team (actually it turned out I knew all but one, I just didn't know that I knew them). Plays guard on defense (we play a 2-3), a slashing forward on offense.

Pros He's a real asset on defense. He is muscular and has good height for a guard in our league. He stays with the ball well and knows how to trap. He always hustles on defense. On offense he has a good first step off the dribble. Intellectually he buys into Geezer Ball (my term for the win with a few points strategy). I've known him since he was in 5th grade (I was 15) and consequently he has the most respect for me of anyone on the team, which is a good thing in his case. He tries hard to be a leader, including for this team.

Cons His second step off the dribble is so-so, and once he's taken that third step towards the basket he's going to shoot come hell or high-water.

Grade B/B+

Avram
[i]Comments[i] A forward. Thinks higher of himself than he deserves. Wears sports goggles (I was known in this league for my GIGANTIC goggles).

Pros Knows how to play a forward in a 2-3. This is a huge plus in my book since defense is essential for Geezer Ball. Is willing to pick on offense, when reminded.

Cons A real non-factor on offense for the most part. Rebounds incredibly poorly for his height (didn't really get the chance to watch him to figure out why yet). Has asthma so he tires more easily than I would like.

Grade C+

Ayael

Comments He is a scrawny freshman guard. I think I'll play him out of position at Forward at times because of our strong Center and kids who can attack the ball better as guards in a 2-3. His older brother and I were very friendly in HS, and his sister, while his sister and I have an unfortunate history. His parents and my parents used to be friendly

Pros Hustles. Took a shot and had a ball blocked, and ran to track down the ball. Scrappy on defense. He doesn't let his scrawn get in his way.

Cons Can't shoot. Doesn't know how to play defense. Panics easily with the ball.

Grade C(I'd never give any lower to this to a kid who really hustles. Without that D-)

Charlie

Comments Brothers with Eddie. For better or for worse your pretty typical Junior in High School boy. He is a big shot on the board in the region for my youth group. He plays point on offense and forward on defense.

Pros He is a great basketball player. He has the ability to take over a basketball game. Willing to be generous with the basketball. Good at driving, even better with the open jumper. Would have no problems playing run and gun if we had the ability to do that.

ConsNot nearly enough of a presence on defense. Because of size I can't afford to have him play guard, although he would probably be better there. Doesn't buy into Geezer ball at all. If we had a team full of Charlies, we wouldn't need to play it. For now not a real problem because of his skill, but potential trouble spot if Geezer Ball really is our right style (which I am not 100% sure of).

Grade A-

Eddie

Comments Brothers with Charlie. A freshman boy who is a guard. I wish I could use him occasionally as a forward, but he seems to truly be a guard. Seems like a really nice guy.

Pros Knows how to move with-out the ball on offense. Can help trap on defense. Fair shooter.

Cons Doesn't know how to move with the ball. Passing could use some help.

Grade B

Luke

Comments Some kids look like "bad kids" and far too many teachers treat them as such. They are kids who really want to be good, but through a combination of having a certain aura and not the sharpest pencil in the box, get labeled as "bad kids" anyway, often because their lack of smarts causes them to get in trouble. Luke is a kid like this. I really think he's a good kid. At our annual week-long summer camp that I'm a counselor at, I caught him and two other guys in a cabin alone with a girl (a major no-no lest there be any babies :) ) after his girlfriend told me where he was and what he was doing. Is a Freshman; through nearly miraculous occurrences the Freshman group at camp thinks I'm "cool" (which is a first in my life) so all things considered he and I get along well.

Pros Dribbles well. Has good court vision. Valuable point guard. Above average shooter.

Cons Defense is suspect. He isn't the tallest of kids and will get pushed around on both offense and defense. No one would ever mistake him for Charley Hustle (though he doesn't slack either)

Grade B

Shlomi

Comments The one kid who I knew nothing of before hand. A likable guy. Plays center.

Pros And he DOES know how to play center. Does everything you need a center to do on defense, and does it well (I know this b/c I was a center). And to top it all off, he loves playing defense. Makes his shots of offense. Doesn't seem to tire. My kinda kid.

Cons Nothing he does, but because of our team is normally a non-factor on offense as we favor the perimeter.

Overall Grade A-

There is one more player at least on our team for sure, however, he wasn't at our first game so I can't tell you anything about him (and don't even remember his name at this point).

What happened in our first game tomorrow.

Feedback/Comments/Questions/Suggestions are welcomed as always.

Well life is funny. It turns out two students (who are twins) have an older brother named Matt. The same Matt who was not there last night. Turns out Matt was sick.

According to his siblings Matt is a gaurd or a forward. He is pretty good, sounds like he's above average for a freshman according other boys who have played with him, and he likes to pass a lot.

According to a teacher who had him, he has a major attitude problem and is difficult to work with. Both of his siblings really like me though so perhaps this will work in my favor. Sounds like he MIGHT be an assest to the team, but who knows overall.

I'm not big into basketball, but you've got my attention. I'll be following this dynasty. Good luck! :)
