FOF2K4: Playing players out of position

For FOF2004:
What effects does playing a player out of position do?

I don't mean "changing the player's position officially", I mean just selecting him to play a position that's not his original position in the depth chart (ie. playing a Flanker at Split End etc etc).

Basically, can my Flanker play Split End without any penalties to ratings? How bout WLB playing SLB? Or MLB playing SLB/WLB? LDT at RDT? RDT at LDT? LDE at RDE? RDE at LDE?

Do you guys tend to play players to their correct positions most times? SLB always SLB? WLB always WLB? Flanker always Flanker? etc etc.

I don't think there is any penalty for the examples you are giving, I could be wrong but I'd say if there is one in these cases it would be slight.

Most of the time it is just an experience rating hit if you switch from one side to the other, especially if the player has played on side for a long time.

I have found that playing players out of position (even more extreme than your example, such as FB as TE) does not have much of a negative effect. I do it liberally.

Have to get creative with cap and roster spots from time to time.

That depends on what you need roster spots for (if you are changing TE to FB or something like that). If you are just doing FL to SE and ones like that, it really probably comes down to personal preference.

Also--be aware that some positions are more flexible than others. An OLB can play ILB and DE, but an ILB can only play OLB. Therefore, listing a player as OLB will let him play DE, while the same player listed as an ILB cannot play DE.
