Most of the good threads on this board are filled with controversy. While it is a private board, I do believe that gamespy.com still does have final say and you could get your mod rights revoked if you abused them, could you not?

Not that you abuse them, I just don't understand why you banned one of the only guys in the HTML thread that stuck up for .400. It seemed like a lynching on the poor guy because he was in the minority.

This is a public forum, yes. Therefore, people are allowed to post their opinions, no matter how outlandish they may be. Ben is the policeman and you sign up for that when you agree to "membership". Sometimes people's opinions are outlandish and offensive (i.e. Gary's family situation) and Ben has every right to ban a person for making such a remark. However, while other opinions may be judged as slanderous and outlandish (the stealing of code that you refer to), it is ultimately just that - someone's opinion. I think very few of us would judge that to be offensive in a "moral" court. Plus, it was obvious that there was some dialogue between the two developers, and HR seemed to question the "coincidence".

Ultimately, I can only assume that you're trying to make the point that Ben is somehow anti-.400 -- which I think is dubious since he's part of the beta team. I give Ben the benefit of the doubt regarding his intentions when agreeing to become a part of that team.

However, when a lot of you guys just prance around the "destroy the troll" pole, it kindof serves to prove him right. While I agree SkyDog does a good job here of not abusing his power, some of you are following the typical net behavior of "scorn anyone who's not in the little clique of old timers" which really drives off new members. If I didn't know a little about Skippys past here, I'd think that the mods had an itchy trigger finger, too. Explain what's up to the guy rather than egg him on.

This is not a public site since membership is required prior to being allowed to post. Once you agree to the terms of membership you have joined a private forum. Granted of course that SkyDog approves your membership request. Unless you didn't realize that he has to approve every membership request before someone can become a member. Therefore, it is Skydog’s site.

Also, gamespy does not own the board but rather the space it occupies. They own the land while SkyDog owns the house. You are playing under Skydog’s roof with his permission, I would suggest following his rules or go elsewhere.

There is a reason that you can not copyright screen layouts on webpages. THere are only so many ways you can show your data on screen.

So, with that said go look at all the standings site on the internet for the various sports. They are all broken down into tables "OH MY" they all show wins, losses, ties, winning % etc. Holy crap its unbelievable they all show the same stats? They all look similiar.

How would you like someone to lay out the data you saw?

Would you like them to put it all diagnol across the screen? Or how about rainbow color. Beings that every site that was made by frontpage on the internet looks the same, this was just about the dumbest post I've ever seen.

Bad prose aside I do agree with Druez on 2 points:

1. It was wrong of Heavy to publicly lay blame on .400 without talking to them privately first. He was baited into it I agree but it still showed poor ethics.

If he contacts .400, presents his problem, and they still don't respond, then fine...take it to the boards.

2. In the spirit of this board it was irresponsible of SD to let it go on.

I know this should have been a dead issue 3 or 4 days ago when it came up but Heavy himself gave the previous HTML post as reference when someone asked if anyone had tried TPB. He did this on his own boards here:

As for skippy...I don't know. He presented his first post in a very supportive and respectful manner and the good ol' boys of this board started baiting him like crazy. If he was that big of a problem in the past SkyDog, I say you should have just let him stay in the penalty box. I think you knew exactly how your partners here on FOFC were going to take him being back and you used it for a little amusement.

Slap, as for your #2 point, that thread started pretty late at night, most likely after ol' SkyDog had gone to bed. You can't blame him for not being up all hours of the night to close those threads.

As for baiting mrskippy, I don't really see any of that going on. As for "Ain't it great to have mrskippy back?" (or something like that) that I said, it wasn't meant to be taken as a flame-bait (Although to an "outsider", I guess I can see how it might look like that.) My comment was just a joke about how mrskippy had a tendency to make lengthy posts arguing points that no one was debating.

In the HTML thread, he kept going on and on and on about the legality of it, when no one was saying .400 did anything illegal. (One person asked, everyone said you can't copyright a webpage layout.). Subby's comment too was a joke directed at how mrskippy tended to make several long-winded posts that could be summed up in 2 sentances. Again, to someone who doesn't know the history, it looks like flame-baiting.

If those two things counted as flame-baiting, then there's a HELL of a lot of flame-baiting going on at FOFC (since those kinds of comments are made by everyone to everyone else on here.) Most of the regulars just take it with a laugh and playfully fired back.

Anyway, that's the defense of my comment. The people who know the history probably got it, but for those who don't, it probably did seem like "flame-baiting".

After skimming the first page of the HTML page...everyone seems like they treated mrskippy fine. I don't see anyone flaming him. It seems to have started on page 2 when RPI said something mrskippy didn't agree with and it escolated (sp?) from there.

That was vintage mrskippy, though. Whenever someone didn't agree with him, he would just keep pressing and pressing and pressing until he finally just went too far. It's happened SO MANY times in the past. It may seem like a small thing, but if SD didn't ban him, it would have been a pretty bad day or two of mrskippy acting like a total jackass and trolling the threads. That's the cycle, and I think SD did the right thing to stop the cycle before it hit its peak again.

Anyway...that's enough of that. Let's get back to the circle jerk.

I'll give you that one. Poor judgement although the thread did also contain other issues people were having with the game. What I didn't like was someone who seems close to Gary on the .400 boards spamming both my board and the JSB board with posts about TPB. Had this been a regular on the board it wouldn't have been a big deal but this person made an account for the purpose of advertising TPB. Rather than deal with it I deleted the thread when the html thing came out. Someone made another thread about it and I linked to the thread.

Now having messed around with TPB tonight, I noticed some things that seemed off. I passed them on to Arlie while we were discussing this thread. Here were my thoughts on the game: The presentation is nice but confusing. I know I'm not the only one that finds it difficult to even make a team human controlled. I can see a number of issues with the stats generated by the game. I like to think you should have some control over the style of play your team uses but I don't see it. I'm sure plenty of people will like it but it isn't the game for me. I'm biased though...lol.

I just wanted to say that, as SkyDog pointed out, I took issue with his decision to close that thread, but after hearing his explanation of why he did it, I understood that it wasn't what I feared (him stopping discussion of his moderation, which should always be a public discussion topic), but another issue altogether unrelated to that that I do not feel is necessary to get into here.

I still believe that the conditions under which skippy was brought back were too harsh, as I do not think anyone can realistically avoid controversy here and yet still get much out of this community. Dontroversy, debate and discussion are part-and-parcel of the give-and-take that goes on here. I feel that skippy was going to end up banned under those conditions eventually, no matter what. It's simply too hard for any of us to avoid it here, at least if we post fairly regualrly.

That said, skippy agreed to those conditions and then violated them. SkyDog was perfectly in his rights to suspend him again, as he warned him of the conditions and skippy was fully aware of them. As I told SkyDog in that thread and privately, I fully support that decision and that it was his decision to make. I also appreciate that he felt strongly enough that my opinion mattered with regards to that thread that he would take the time to expalin his actions there.

As for that HTML thread, I do feel skippy was baited heavily there, and I was amazed he kept his cool as long as he did. I also feel he didn't go to nearly the lengths he used to in threads like those. I agree that he should be banned on the pure basis that he violated the conditions that SkyDog set out for him, but I still believe that, sans those conditions, skippy's actions that led to his banning by and of themselves did not merit such a punishment.

I am like Marmel. I agree with almost all of SkyDog's decisions, but not all of them. All I know is for the most part those decisions dont' affect me and I believe that they are being made with the good of the community in mind. And it cannot be denied that this remains a very open forum and community, which is in no small part a credit to SkyDog's moderation.

druez, honestly, you have no idea whatsoever what skippy has done here in the past. The depth of your ignorance of that is infintesimal. I can't even begin to lay it all out. You had to be there. I agree with you (as I said) that his recent actions by themselves don't merit a banning, but there is far more to this than meets the eye. skippy is on a much, much tighter leash than most of the rest of us. When you're that close to the fire, it's a good idea to avoid playing with explosives, don't you think? skippy ignored that danger and he got burned.

Obviously, there is a healthy following for FOF here. But frankly, you are also just as ignorant of what makes this board tick as you are of skippy's past transgressions. This is a text sim board. Not an FOF board. It merely began as a support board for FOF a long, long time ago, and evolved over the years into something far more inclusive of the text sim community in general.

I am sorry if you feel we aren't ass-kissing .400 all the time, or that some of us might have more of a connection to Jim and the FOF series after all these years. I think .400 has some great developers working for it, and they have some good ideas. I am looking forward to them progressing as a company, and, assuming I get over Joe's recent rant (still haven't really), I'll be in line for .400 products just as quickly as FOF or other quality text sims.

I tihnk with a little more time here, you will see we are a much more open community than you give us credit for, and really, there are some times when you really need to STFU yourself and just open your ears.

The fact that you have been just itching for a fight for 3-4 days now is blatantly obvious, and it's a pain. You really need to question yourself about why you're so angry that you need to take part in this destructive behavior.
