Well, I finally started my first in-depth career last night, and what a first year.
I took over Tampa Bay and left them on auto-pilot for 10 years. They won the SB the first year, had a few rough spots, but by 2012, despite being some $50M under the cap (10 years without fee agency will do that for you), they went 13-3, giving me my choice of jobs for 2013.
As luck would have it, my hometown Lions were coming off of a 1-15 season (an opening day win, followed by 15 losses - so close to perfection!). I took the job. The team had 23 guys signed and under $1M left in cap room. Ouch. Harrington was still around and had developed into a solid if unspectacular QB who had started only 7 and 9 games the previous 2 years. I resigned him to a reasonable deal and cut a few guys to get some breathing room.
Anyway, I learned through the draft that I might as well just pick up guys off the waiver wire post-draft. After I drafted my 6 guys (I lost the 3rd round pick by being over the cap last year, I suppose), I ended up signing a bunch of undrafted rookies to take to training camp, 75% of which ended up being better than the guys I drafted. I've got to figure out the draft thing soon, or I'm going to bury my team in wasted money.
So the season starts, and right off the bat, I lose my starting RB and RDT for the season. I've got like $2 left to sign guys, so there goes my 3rd round pick next year. But that's just the beginning. Over the course of the year, I end up with 8 starters on IR, including 3 RBs, 3 DTs, and Harrington, who had this tag-team injury thing going with his backup - one of them would be doubtful, the other probable. One out, the other 100%. UNtil Harrington finally couldn't get up off of the turf in the final game of the season. I ended up signing an additional 8 guys just to field a team. And we somehow finished 10-6, losing in the first round of the Wild Card to (you guessed it ) my old team (sort of), TB.
Anyone had these kinds of injury issues? I left the injury setting on 100 and ny head coach had a "good" injury rating. Crazy, but fun.
I hope I get another 3 hour block of time tonight to start 2014. I've already spent more time playing FOF2K4 than I did FOF4. Nice job on this one, Jim!
