Very Wierd p4 problem

I have seen alot of wierd things in my days, but never anything like this.

In an earlier post, I talked about a p4 that refused to work due to memory issues. we finally get the memory in, and it still refuses to boot. Now so far everything is normal. But then he goes in with a multimeter and starts checking some voltage. He grounds on the case, and the other lead to the case, and lo and behold the fan spins on the cpu, but it doesnt work. The cd rom just closes and opens repeatedly and no signal comes from the video card.

Now we think that the case is grounding out something. so we pull it out and try a different case. This time we cant get the problem to reproduce itself. So I really think that the motherboard was bad. Somehow that mb grounded, and when he tested the battery the voltage went through the case and back into the motherboard.

LOL...I had this problem with a P3 one time. It totally had me stumped for about 3 hours until I realized I had an extra mounting tab snapped into the mounting side of the case.

It didn't give me any problems until I screwed the cards down. If I left them loose it was ok. In the end the motherboard survived, but my brand new $289 GeForce 256 didn't. I bought it at EB (they were the only store carrying them at the time) so it wasn't too difficult to replace.

Slapbone: so it was grounding out on yours too? I have seen a ground cause a mb not being able to boot, however when you remove the faulty ground, it should work again. Hopefully It didnt burn the processor, or memory out.
