For the last couple of years, my grandmother has sent me a MediaPlay gift card, and I have been very happy. However, when I realized MediaPlay had stopped selling PC Games, I politely asked her to consider giving me a different gift this year. I provided her with a list of stores if she needed help and said she should get anything she wanted for me besides the gift card. Well, yesterday a nice little package came from her, and I tossed it under the tree for today. I opened it up, and it was a MediaPlay gift card, just like I had asked not to get. Urghhhhhhh.

MediaPlay does not sell PC games?? Our two stores locally have a huge selection of PC games (along with DVDs, CDs, Books, PC and console assessories, etc.). I didn't realize stores could be that different.

Sorry, its just that, having witnessed most of my family today and realizing that most of them have no idea of the real meaning of Christmas, I am getting a little tired of the overcommercialization/excessive gift giving aspect.

Maybe so Marm, maybe so.
But seeing somebody bitch about something this fucking petty instead of being grateful they've got that grandparent around to give them anything at all pretty much turns my stomach.
Sour? Maybe.
But funerals can have that effect on people, they provide a pretty good reality check on priorities.

Just to put it into perspective, my kids would gladly take an ugly sweater or pair of socks from their grandmother who passed away on December 7.

Yes, and you should really consider just what she was thinking but then I realized that I've lost all four of my grandparents and I admit I got a little weepy and nostalgic about all the gifts I'm missing this year and it bummed me out.
No, really, this thread did make me think of my missing grandparents but I didn't read that much into what he wrote. Believe me, compared to the "christmas cheer" I've seen in the last few days, this is NOTHING and even taken on it's own, it doesn't seem overly selfish or whiny to me and I do wonder about her motives a little bit.

Sorry but you're just wrong. I decided at the age of 12 not to celebrate birthdays and haven't celebrated a christmas since my grandparents died when I was in high school and I don't give or receive presents and am very vocal against the practice.
Believe what you will and I've taken crap for being very adament in my beliefs but I've never complained about a gift except to bitch about someone giving one when I hadn't one to return as I don't give gifts.
I consider them shallow. I do, however, give christmas in July gifts to the local orphanage. I started this when I was in Cali and we got a list of "christmas wishes" from the local orphanage one december.
This list would break your heart but since you complain about gifts you've been given maybe it wouldn't. Try dealing with a kid wishing for a mom or dad sometime. Or wishing for a new toothbrush.
It's hard to bitch when seeing a handwritten letter wishing for a toothbrush and a pack of underwear but hey, you're the boss, champ.
Anyway, I came up with the idea of christmas in july because it doesn't prove shit giving a gift at christmas ( after all, I didn't accept them myself as gifts ) so I got us to revisit the orphanage in July and give the kids the gifts because everybody knows it's not Christmas in July but we still cared enough about them to love them and give them gifts then.
Reading shit like you wrote makes me wonder why I even tried and again reinforces why I hate people.
Enjoy your self though. May others care about you to the same degree you care about them. Merry Christmas.

I don't care one way or the other but I have an opinion. I consider you whats wrong with the world and a shining example of why I hate people. Someone can honestly love and base a meaningful relationship with someone who could give a fuck about anything but the quality of their own gifts??
Beyond that, honestly, i don't know or even care you even exist. Treat people how you want. You're not evil, you're a human being. Except for a few notable examples you're no more or less evil than the common worthless fuck. At least, you're honest enough to admit you're selfish to the bone. I do admire that. It takes guts.

ISiddiqui -- He's welcome to complain about any gift he wants. There's no one denying him that "right".
There's also an equal right to call him out as shallow asshole that doesn't have a fucking clue and wasn't worthy of a gift in the first place.
The choice of gift belongs with the giver, not the givee. That's not a real complex notion of comprehend. This is not someone being paid in company scrip for their labor, it's a gift, a bonus, an extra. An unearned benefit.
But in this day and age of false entitlement, it ain't exactly surprising that a lot of people don't seem to get that.
