Not sure if this is in all XSN Sports games, you can get 2 months free of Xbox Live with the purchase of any sports game. There is a little card in the box and it says try out xbox live on the front. It says it is valid until the end of March. You need a valid Credit card, and after 2 months it will bill you a monthly charge or you can cancel whenever.
It also says you can buy the xbox live starter kit at anytime, and you get the 12 months free after the two month trial (unless you cancel early I guess).
Not a bad deal if you want 14 months total for $50. Saves about $35 dollars.
I might try this, and I have an extra code if someone wants one. Just PM me and I'll send you the code.
Go to here (http://www.xbox.com/live/offer) to read up on the instructions and everything.

Those cards are in most, if not all, Xbox Live-enabled games in general, not just XSN titles.
Also, you can use the card inside the regular starter kits to extend your trial subscription as well, so instead of letting Microsoft charge your credit card $50 at the end of that two months, value-wise, you're better served buying the starter kit. It costs $70, but they include the headset, and the full version of MechAssault for $20 more than if you bought the headset ($30) and game ($20) separately.
Just my two bits.

dola - let me rephrase that. You spend $20 more than the automatic renewal, but you get the headset and game at a $30 savings over buying all three components separately.
Pardon my brainfart.

so it'd be smarter if I went ahead and bought the starter kit ($50 at Circuit city, seems to fluctuate between 50 and 70 weekly), and it comes with a card too, then just let them extend it by using the free 12 months with the starter kit. Cool. I'll probably use it to download content mainly, as I just don't play my games enough to be good enough to beat real people.

Dunno if it's really worth it just for downloadable content. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, but I wouldn't worry too much about being able to beat people at games. The ranking systems are fairly good indicators of a person's ability to win, and some games will let you filter your opponents based on your own ranking. For instance, in Project Gotham Racing 2, you can search for games with people of lower skill than you. It's not always completely accurate, but it's better than going into games blindly. Another perk about the online play is just playing with friends. In that case, the games are just plain fun, without putting too much emphasis on winning. If you don't have any friends with Xbox Live, try playing games with lots of players like racing games or shooters. You'll find people you like to play with.

If you can get the v3 starter kit for $50, it's a no-brainer. The v3 kit is the one that has the full version of MechAssault. But even at $70, it's still a better idea, yeah, to extend it that way than to let them roll over your subscription by charging your credit card.
Content download is cool, but it depends on what games you're playing. Some, like DDR Ultramix, will only have 'premium' content, which is the stuff you pay extra for. There are licensing reasons behind that particular example.
Links 2004 is another example of a game that will likely have some premium content. I say 'some,' because it's entirely possible that we'll see some free, fantasy courses as well.
Then there are games like MechAssault, where the first several content packages were free, and then later packages have been premium content.
You're going to see a mixture of things there, honestly. Much will be free, but there will still be content that's an extra, nominal fee above and beyond the yearly subscription fee. So far, the Links courses are the only items I know for sure I'll pay for. Anything else is really going to have to wow me to get me to fork over my 3 bucks *and* surrender some of my hard drive space.
