DETROIT -- Matt Millen will be back next year as president and general manager of the Detroit Lions, who have had the worst record in the NFL during his three seasons in Detroit.

Lions owner William Clay Ford said Sunday he hadn't considered firing Millen, despite a 9-38 record during his tenure going into the team's final game vs. the St. Louis Rams.

"I want him," Ford said before the game. "I don't need any more reason than that."

Millen has two years left on a five-year, $15-million contract he signed after the 2000 season.

Ford said there may be changes on coach Steve Mariucci's staff, however.

Millen, who was not surprised by Ford's announcement, said he is even more determined to turn around the franchise he has run since leaving a lucrative job as a television analyst.

"You come to do a job and you've got to get it finished and find a way to get it done," said the former linebacker, who won four Super Bowls with three teams.

Ford agreed.

"The fans, and I don't blame them, are interested in the won-loss record and I guess that's the barometer you judge success or failure by if you're a fan," Ford said.

However, Ford said he's been pleased with Millen's drafts and leadership.

Ford said a big reason the Lions struggled -- again -- this season was because they have 15 players on injured reserve.

"I think of what could've been," Ford said. "It could've been a lot better."

Besides Detroit's awful record, Millen has been the source of some controversies.

He used a derogatory term for gays in a heated exchange two weeks ago with Kansas City receiver Johnnie Morton, who Millen cut two years ago. Millen later apologized.

"I'm not condoning what he said, but having said it, he did all the right things," Ford said.

Millen was fined $200,000 this summer by the NFL because he didn't follow the league's minority hiring policy when he hired Mariucci. Millen has refused to respond to the fine, but Ford criticized the league for fining Millen.

Last season, Millen apologized for his choice of words when he called an unidentified player a "devout coward."

"He may be learning on the job, but he's learning," Ford said.

What does he need to do? Burn down Ford Field? I do not believe in the Dan Snyder/Nebraska school of thought which says that you have to fire anyone who does not produce excellent results over the course of one year. But during Millen's tenure, the Lions have undergone one of the worst stretches in football history. No team in the history of the NFL has lost more road games in a row than Millen's boys. And it's not like they have been undefeated at home, either. Why isn't performing worse than almost anyone in history who has ever had your job grounds for a firing? What am I missing?

That's almost as bad as the Dolphins keeping Wannstedt.

This is the same Ford that kept Wayne Fontes a couple years too many.

I believe there is two years left on his contract so paying Millen to sit at home has to factor into it.

The Front Office is reported to be running well with no more internal backstabbing.

When Ford Jr championed for Millen to Ford Sr, they knew going into this, that Millen has no experience and is learning on the job. Stubborn maybe??? Hard to admit you are wrong for the best of us.

With all that being said, AM1270 said it best today: Take away Millen's name for their current three year W/L record and anyone would have been fired for it. The fact that Millen has not been fired is further proof that the Ford family has no business of owning a football team. Assuming your object is to win sometime in the next 50 years.

It doesn't surprise me at all that Millen is still in Detroit. I completely expected him to be retained. The Fords just dont get rid of someone that quickly.

I'd say hiring a buffoon like Millen is proof enough. I never understood the ground-swell of chatter about him being a good candidate 3 years ago, and I haven't seen anything since to change my mind. The guy was nothing more than a Madden-wannabe color analyst. What makes him more qualified than Cris Collingsworth to be a GM? Hell, on booth performance alone, I'd hiring Troy Aikman over Millen.

I don't follow the Snoil too closely, but retaining Millen while suggesting that mariucci' coaching staff needs a shakeup just doesn't fit with my mental image of "what to do to turn this thing around."

Ksyrup brings up a great point. Why did they hire Millian in the first place?

I believe:

League contacts that he has made throughout his time as a player/color analyst.

His relationship with Mariucci.

His no-nonsense approach.

Seems kinda thin to be hiring a GM on. Let alone a GM/CEO of your football team.

Publicity to fill the seats since the team was so bad...people recognize the guy...

On the heels of losing Barry they needed a face...

Barry is certainly a different guy...he's wacky...

And, besides, if you make him GM, he may realize how bad the team sucks and activate himself ;).

I think we have a plan forming here.... :)

I feel for Lions fans. This is possibly an even worse move than keeping Wannstedt...

Actually they will be ok. Mariucci is a quality coach and that alone will show. He won't let Millen run off full cocked...just half cocked as far as players go.

There is promise on the field as the Lions showed significant life at home...

I'm not surprised. Dismayed, yes. Disappointed, of course. But not surprised.

One fun thing about having Millen as GM is that I know I can do a better job than he can. But can you imagine the headlines:

LIONS DISMISS MILLEN, HIRE WHIZ KID AS GM

DETROIT (AP) - Today the Lions announced the firing of general manager Matt Millen and simultaneously announced the hiring of the unknown 35-year-old Honolulu Blue.

"We think the kid has spunk and will help lead the Lions to the next level," said owner William Clay Ford.

"I know my credentials don't seem to be as good as Mr. Millen's," said Blue sarcastically. "But I've won over a dozen Front Office Bowls using the best football GM simulator on the market, and I am sure I can bring the same ideas to the team. For one thing I know better than to pay zillions of dollars for mediocrities such as..."

At that moment, Blue was beaten to within an inch of his life by mediocrities James Stewart and Az-Zahir Hakim.

If memory serves me well (and I am sure Lions fans will correct me) Millen was hired and was going to succeed if he hired a quality staff i.e. a strong Director of Player Personnel to do the grunt work. A guy who could set a direction for the team and would allow the staff to fit players into the direction. In the beginning, he had that type of guy with Bill Tobin but he was fired and Millen has been out of his league ever since
