I saw a highlight. Pretty crazy. It was "old time" hockey. There was a clump of players in a brawl when one of the goalies comes skating in takes a flyer onto the top of the pile. Haven't seen anything like it in a number of years.

This is hockey... Hockey in my mind should be 2-3 good scorers, a bunch of solid D players and one or two real bruisers... The NHL now sucks, its not hockey. Look at the Canadian Junior leagues or the US college (ie U MN, U ND, U Michigan squads) to see real hockey

Go to an ECHL game. You will frequently see PIM's top 300-500. I went to a Toledo Storm game a few years back, there was a bench clearing brawl and TWO goalie fights :D

I have been attending ECHL games all season, attending about 16 or so, and have not seen a game with more than 3 fights in it, and no brawls.

Well, 3 fights is still a pretty good number of fights for a hockey game, don't you think?

Back when Tallahassee had a team in the ECHL and we didn't have kids, the wife and I would go to a game every now and then. You're talking about a bunch of southerners who really wouldn't know the difference between ECHL hockey and NHL hockey, and all they wanted to see was fights. If the game got out of hand one way or the other, it was guaranteed that someone would give the crowd what they wanted, and the 3rd period basically turned into skating around waiting for the next fight.

It was like going to a NASCAR race and having the drivers decide that because the race was boring, they should spice it up and total a few cars. Combined with the low level of play (it's amazing how much faster NHL players are), it was not much fun to watch. Well, I guess the crowd's reaction was amusing, in a Jerry Springer way, but otherwise...

I went to an AHL game last year that was like this - it was between Manchester and Manitoba.

the game had several fights, and was starting to get ugly towards the end. there was a big fight with about 3 seconds left that involved everyone on the ice except the goalies - nasty fight...blood on the ice and all that.

the game wasn't at all close, and with 3 seconds left, you'd think the refs would just call it...but they didn't. They had to bring em out for the last faceoff, which, of course, just started a whole new brawl. This one was just a mess - it was right in front of the benches, so guys from the benches were getting involced, and there was a nice water bottle fight between the two benches.

I think the funniest part was that at that point, the refs just sent everyone off the ice...with all the equipment strewn everywhere on the ice. They spent about 10 minutes after the game trying to sort through it all.

Yeah, involving the benches is always good entertainment. Inevitably, someone would pick a fight right in front of his own bench, and the guys on the bench would start piling on, and then all hell would break loose. Twice at Tallahassee games, one of the teams left the ice "in protest" over the way the refs handled the fights, only to be forced to come back out under threat of forfeit.

Once the Florida Panthers cut their formal ties to the Tallahassee team - meaning that the team was 100% made up of scrubs who would never have a shot at the NHL - things got a lot crazier.

Which would, for better or worse, draw about as well as pro bowling in the U.S.

Nice to see Craig Berube is still alive and kicking (and punching).

Man, with all of those Game Misconducts who was left to skate?

The ECHL used to be a real goon league, but in recent years they have actually gotten a few good nhl prospects down there and are now playing a pretty good brand of hockey.

I LOVE goalie fights....i'll never forgett he time Felix Potvin beat on Ron Hextall:D

I was fond of the goalie with the last name of Emery. Since that is my last name, and I play goalie on a floor hockey team, I believe he serves the family name well. :)

Look I am from California, so what I say regarding hockey should probably be accorded the proper amount of merit. That said the single thing I hate most about hockey is the fighting. They should get rid of it completely. I think the fighting detracts from the rest of the action. You know the stuff that revolves around skill and athletic ability. Fighting has no place in professional team sports, and shouldn't be tollerated.

I downloaded the video for the fight.

Crazy stuff including a goalie dive that looks like he was trying to score for the NFL Eagles :)

Take me out to the brawl game... (http://www.phantomshockey.com/media_Sights/gameday0304.asp?CalID=2368)

Take it from a Canadian. Fighting is integral to the game. Without it, you would see less skill and athletic ability as the star players are hooked, slashed, and cheapshotted all game long. Brawls are unnecessary, but you have to have the ability to take a troublemaker out behind the woodshed and teach him a lesson. It is different from other pro sports because players are carrying lumber around that can really hurt with a slash and can bodycheck at speeds a human cannot reach without the help of skates. I speak from personal experience.

How does someone score against his team when he's onthe ice?

That's not scoring against his team. That's his plus-minus.

Explanation of plus/minus (http://proicehockey.about.com/library/blquestions_plus-minus.htm)

When an even-strength or shorthanded goal is scored, every player on the ice for the team scoring the goal is credited with a plus. Every player on the ice for the team scored against gets a minus. A player's overall total is calculated by subtracting the minuses from the pluses. A high plus total is taken to suggest that a guy is a good defensive player.

Most professional leagues (and most amateur, for that matter) do not allow the officials any sort of leeway. The game MUST be finished. Remember a couple years back in the NFL, when the officials tried to stop the game in Cleveland because the fans were throwing things onto the field? The officials had to get everyone back out there to kneel down to officially end the game.
