Preseason 2003

We are ranked #112 in the country in the preseason polls and last in the MAC. This could be a long year but hopefully I can rebuild the program.

ROSTER Evaluations:

We have no strong players. Our Highest rated player according to our scouts is our punter and he is only rated currently at 40.

Starters:

QB Stan Spencer, Jr - Stan is our best weapon on offense. It is too bad he doesn't have good wideouts.

RB Cedric Jennings, SR - Cedric will be pushed by a jr. converted FB Dillon Chester

WR Quentin Maloney. Sr - Likes to go over the middle

WR Lonnie Cline, JR - Can make some clitch 3rd down catches

WR Chris Bias, FR - Raw but has good talent can make some big plays now

TE Chuck Prescot, SR - Starter only becuase of run blocking skills

C Leon Gilliam, Fr - Good talent but is very raw as a true freshman. He is still our best option here.

G Charles Munson, Jr - Best a pass blocking, can really hurt you in the power running game.

G Zack Buckley, Jr - Well rounded blocker but would rather play tackle.

T Levon Camarillo, Jr - Our best overall lineman

T Russell Aaron, Jr - Undersized for a tackle

NT Steve Alonso, Jr - Pass Rushing is his best

DE Juan Clemente, So - Needs playing time to develop.

DE Brenden Kiluk, Sr - Our Best DL

OLB Ernest Bailey, Sr - Our best outside LB option

OLB Beron Robertson, Sr - Decent Pass cover LB

ILB Mack Sheldon, Jr - Best LB on the team

ILB Curtis Bradey, So - Best option now... Could be good in the future

CB Bert Kirk, Jr - Converted Safety

CB Bryant Forbes, Jr - Another Converted Safety

S Jeffery Clayton, Sr - Our best secondary player

S Fred Hoffman, Sr - Best option left at S

We were really never in this game as Rutgers took control of this game early leading 26-7 after 3 quarters. We managed to make it respectable with two TD passes in the 4th quarter. Spencer ended the day with some nice start throwing for 245 yards and 3 TD against just 1 int.

We are just 10 point underdogs in this one ! Anyone want some vegas action on this one ?

Vegas lost on this one. We were never in it and we didn't have a good game played by anyone. Spencer who played really well last week threw two interceptions and fumbled once in just over a half before being benched for Whyte who fumbled twice and threw a pick of his own.

We start out the conference season with a close battle to the end with Akron. The game was tied with just over a minute to go at 17, when Akron broke a 24 yard TD run to take a 24-17 lead. We got a nice return of 33 yards on the kickoff but immediatly fumbled the ball away and Akron took a knee twice to close out the game. Spencer threw three more picks in the game. This is 10 interceptions in just 5 games. we drop to 0-5 on the season and 0-1 in the conference with this loss.

Week 6 at Central Florida (2-2) (1-0)

We are 13 point underdogs as we head down south to face Central Florida. Central Florida played just about as bad as it could play in this game. They lost three fumbles and shot themselves in the foot time and time again. All this and they still managed to beat us 27-0. Until late in the fourth quarter we had just managed 3 first downs. We ended up with just 7 for the game. This season is looks to be headed for 0-12 if we can't get something going.

Week 7 at Miami of Ohio (1-4) (1-0)

We are 7 point underdogs this week at Miami.

WHAT A GAME !!!
We led this game 21-3 with just over 8 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter when Miami got a scoring run from OJ Hoff and a two point conversion to cut the lead to 21-11. Early in the 4th quarter we are driving for what looked like the game clinching score when Spencer threw an interception in the end zone to give the ball back to Miami. Miami drove the length of the field and scored on a 3 yard pass from Fletcher with 7:55 remaining to make the score 21-18. Another interception by Spencer with 6:37 remaining led to a 52 year FG by Miami with 2:53 remaining in the game. Our drive stalled and the game headed to Overtime.

1st OT
Miami got the ball first and scored after converting a 4th and 10 from the 25 yard line. We answered right back with a 5 yard TD run by Jennings - 28-28

2nd OT
Spencer hit Bueter with a 15 yard scoring strike to give us a 35 to 28 lead. Miami scored again to tie the game back up at 35.

3rd OT
Miami QB Melvin Fletcher scored on a 15 yard QB draw to make the score 41-35. The two point conversion failed. We got the ball and scored on a 4 yard run my Maloney and our conversion failed.

4th OT
We got the ball first in OT #4 but missed a 42 yard FG after three straight incomplete passes. Miami then broke out hearts with a TD scoring drive and won the game 47-41..

Just ask Phil Fulmer he goes 10-3 this season and all the talk shows are asking for either his head or Randy Sanders (offensive Cord.) head.....

After last week this game was boring. Marshall jumped on us early and often taking the game 38-7. Spencer had a terrible game going 9 of 22 with 5 interceptions. The only positive aspect was backup Whyte effort in the 4th quarter he was 7-9 for 75 yards and a TD in the 4th.

[B]Week 10 at Toledo (4-3)

We lost again to drop to 0-10 but this may have been the best game we played all year. Toledo was a 22 point favorite and it took them all 4 quarters to put us away 20-10. Whyte played really well going 17 for 30 for 186 Yards.

Week 11 Northern Illinois (4-5)(4-1)

Northern a 10 point favorite in our place and we have them down 17-3 at the half. I knew Northern would make a run at us in the second half and they did but with 8:00 remaining in the game they scored but missed the extra point to leave the score at 17-16. We couldn't manage a 1st down and gave them good field position and they took it in and got a two point conversion to make it 24-17. We got the ball with just under 4 minutes remaining and Whyte led us down the field with some great passing but the comeback ended with a 4th and 16 on the Northern Illinois 17 yard line. The question now is will Whyte ever give up the starting job next year when our starter comes back.. Right now it doesn't look like it.

Week 13 @ Kent State (1-9)(1-7)

It is a battle of the two last place teams in the MAC North. We are 6 point underdogs and it is our last chance to win a game this season. Both teams showed why they had only won one game between them and were terrible. Kent State was less terrible and won the game 7-3. It was the second straight game that our last minute drive ended with a 4th down in the red zone.

Week 2 Harvard

WE WIN WE WIN WE WIN !!!

After a bye week in week one of the season we take on Harvard of the Ivy League. We are finally favored in a game and we covered by a point. It took a great game by Chester Dillon with 211 rushing yards and 59 receiving yards and 5 rushing touchdowns and another receiving TD. Stan Spencer also had the best game of his career completing 25 of 33 for 310 Yards and a TD. He did however continue throwing interceptions with two more today. Our defense couldn't stop Hardvard but we were able to outscore them.

Chester's 6 touchdown broke the league record for touchdowns in a game....

Week 3 Yale (0-2)

Yale comes into Buffalo as a 5 point underdog. We turned what was a close game heading to the 4th into a route. We scored 20 points in the 4th mostly off of our defense. The defense returned an interception 92 yards for a score and setup the offense around midfield for two other 4th quarter scores. Dillon had another great game with 102 yards on 18 carries to go along with 52 yards receiving. True Freshman QB Brandon Parrish threw a TD pass on his first pass of his college career to serve notice that highly recruited Toby Hicks who is redshirting this season will have come competition for next years starting QB spot.

Vegas has this game even... Is there any way this team is as good as itr first 3 games ? We jumped out to a 31-3 lead and never were challenged. Stan Spencer was great again going 25 of 32 for 322 yards. True Freshman Jon Meyer stepped up to make 13 catches for 169 yards. Dillon had his third straight 100 yard game with a 103 yard 3 TD performace. The 3 touchdowns gives him 9 rushing touchdowns in 3 games.

Vegas says this game is even. They must not have been aware that we just are not that good... Ohio Led the game 17-0 before we even got a first down. It was never close as we lost 48-7. I think the team was bothered by their first TV appearance...

Week 7 Marshall(4-1) at Buffalo (3-1)

Marshall is an 11 point favorite here at Buffalo. We played very well on offense but we just could not get off the field on defense. Dillon had another very good day rusing for 123 yards on 16 carries. Spencer also threw for 286 yards in the game. We had some problems closing out drives. We missed two field goals early and threw one interception in the endzone. If we could have just converted those drives we could have made it a 4 quarter game.

Week 8 Western Michigan (1-4) at Buffalo (3-2)

WHAT A COMEBACK !!!

We trailed 28-10 as the 4 quarter got started. We scored a touchdown and got the two point conversion with 12:48 remaining to get back in the game. a 22 yard touchdown pass 4 minutes later cut the lead to 28-25 with 8:18 remaining. We got the ball back and drove down to a 4th and goal at the 1 and decided to kick the game tying FG with 2:32 remaining. Our defense held Western to a three and out and we drove down the field and kicked the winning FG as time expired. It took some great performances to get it done.. Dillon ran for another 159 yards on 21 carries. Spencer threw for 359 yards on 23 of 36 passing. True Freshman Meyer caught 9 passes for 195 yards and 2 TD.

Akron (2-5)(2-3) at Buffalo (5-3)(2-3)

We are 12 point favorites at home over Akron. This is a hugh game for us since a win here would secure a winning season and get us to .500 in conference. I never really felt confortable in this one until late as early in the 4th Akron had cut our 24-0 halftime lead down to 31-21. At that point I feel we woke up and took control 1:30 seconds after the lead was cut to 10 Spencer hit Meyer on a 71 yard scoring strike. Just two minutes after that we were back in the endzone again on a 6 yard touchdown run by Dillion. Dillon had 166 yards rushing on 32 carries on the day. The gives him 1048 yards on the season. Jon Meyer also had a big day catching the ball with 188 yards on 6 catches with 3 touchdowns. He should get over the 1000 yard mark as well before he end of the season. Meyer is just a freshman. If he can stay healthy and stays here for all 4 years he may set career records here that may never be broken.

This was our day for big scoring plays. We had touchdown passes of 45 and 71 yards and two interception returns of 48 and 64.

Week 12 Buffalo(6-3)(3-3) at Central Florida (5-4)(4-3)

We were never in the game in the second half. The game was tied at 10 at the half but it was one of those game you just feel like you are being controlled. We only had 5 first downs at the half. They had 14. The second half was even worse we only got 2 second half first downs and they took us out of the game winning 33-10. There were really not any bright spots to this game.. We drop to 3-4 in the conference our last game at Miami of Ohio next week.

Season Recap

Overall I am happy with what happened in 2004. We finished with a 6-5 record improving on last years 0-12 season by 6 games. We ended the season on a sour note with 2 straight losses but I think we have a solid base for next season...

[B]Week 1 Tulsa at Buffalo

In a lite week of action we are on TV5 as Tulsa travels to Buffalo. We are favored by 3 in the game based mostly on home field advantage. Early in the game our weakness this season is showing badly. Our Offensive line is terrible. We allow Tulsa 9 sacks in the game. However, Soph. Brandon Parrish stood in and took hit after hit while still completing passes all over the place. He finished the game going 28 of 39 for 381 yards. He really showed his toughness in his debut start. Even with the performance our Offense stuggled to put points on the boards. Our Defense managed to score on two long interception returns to key the win. The defense was not very stong in the long run though allowing Tulsa 190 yards rushing on the day.

Week 3 Buffalo(1-0) at Harvard(0-1)

We head to Harvard this week looking to play better on the offensive side of the ball. We didn't in fact it got much worse. The rush got to Parrish this week. He was sacked 7 times and hurried into lots of poor throws. He had a terrible day going just 7 of 28 for 79 Yards and 2 Interceptions. We managed just 129 total yards on the day while Harvard had 533 yards. This game was worse than the 30-6 score indicated. Our only score came on another interception return against Harvard's 2nd team offense. I am going to have to get Jimmie Blackwell some more carries he has been our most productive player thus far with 112 yards on just 23 carries for the season.

Week 5 Buffalo (1-1) at Eastern Michigan (0-2)

We head to Eastern Michigan this week as a 2 point favorite. Based on our performance last week I think we should be the underdog on the road. We once again play terrible on the road. Nothing was working all day long until late in the 4th quarter with us trailing 28-7 we put in backup QB Toby Hicks. He really played well in those last few minutes going 7 of 12 for 152 yards and 2 scores. His play made a statement for him being the starter next week. We will see

Week 7 Miami of Ohio (1-3) at Buffalo (1-3)

This season just keep going from bad to worse. We are giving up 223 yards per game on the ground. We allow Miami 309. Both teams started out scoring at will as Brandon Parrish who 2 weeks ago was feeling the footsteps of backup Toby Hicks was playing well. However, Brandon's season came to an end early in the 3rd quarter to an terrible high ankle sprain. In looking at positives from this game Freshman Jimmie Blackwell had his second straight 100 yard game.
