Good pitcher, and one of those guys who was entertaining to watch on the mound.

I still think one of the funniest lines I ever heard was his response to a reporter's insipid question:

"How do you like playing on artificial grass?"

Tug: "I don't know. I never smoked the stuff."

Minor nitpick but the question was "which do you prefer, natural grass or astroturf? and he replied "I don't know, I've never smoked astroturf."

I hated the Phillies but I've always admired Tug and will sincerely miss him. :(

I feel like a doof for not knowing Tim McGraw the country singer was his son. You would think, being a country fan and an owner of a couple McGraw CDs, that I would have known that.

I mostly remember Tug McGraw as a Philly in the 70s and 80s. I always did like his style, even as a kid. RIP Tug.

If I remember correctly..... Tim McGraw didn't know that Tug was his dad until recently (within the past ten years) .... I could be wrong tough....

How can anyone hate the Phillies? They always stay out of everyones way, never win anything important.

As for Tug, its a shame that he lost his battle to cancer, I thought that he was going to make it.

They booed Mike Schmidt in Philly.

You know, I am looking back at their championship year in 80 and there's not one starter on that team I don't like or think fondly of. I found myself asking why I hated that team in particular and now I remember.

I was a huge KC fan that season and rooted against the Phillies in the series. I just didn't like them because they won that series but when I look at that roster, I can't think of anybody I hate seeing have the ring.

Since I, as a Bucs fan have every reason to hate the Eagles I think I just kinda transposed that hate onto the Phillies but you're right, they are mostly harmless. :D

It's not the city though, I loved Dr J and the 76ers and still kinda like them in a "haven't seen more than one basketball game since the millenium and haven't missed it" kind of way and I really liked Rocky Balboa a lot too.

Shame he isn't real. :D

ps: He's no Mike Schmidt though. You could say that I was kinda a fan of his. :)

pps: I'm pretty sure it's been longer still that I haven't seen a baseball game in it's entirety. My interest in baseball faded earlier than my interest in basketball did but I was far more into baseball for far longer. Never having a home team to root for really hurt baseball for me.

I didn't put 2 and 2 together until a few years ago, but they did a national commercial together (don't recall the product). Or, if Tug wasn't in it, Tim was and there was a reference to his dad (or vice versa - you can tell that advertising works well on me...).

He will be missed. I actually got the news by way of the updates sent out by mlb.com. I signed up for a couple of team's updates and this one came across fairly quickly last night.

I wasn't a Phillies fan, but Tug was always one of the most entertaining players. They had some real characters in the 70's. Spaceman Lee, Al Hrabosky, McGraw, etc. There aren't anymore characters like that in the game.
