View Full Version : TCY: PLayers out of position

I have 4 LBs in my 3-4 Defense (duh) and two of them I have slotted as playing out of position (one ILB playing SOLB...one OLB playing SILB).
When I try and switch these players "primary position" there ratings fall which I obviously want to avoid. Here is my question:
If I leave them at their primary position but play them elsewhere ILB-----OLB) will they have the same neg ratings effect as me actually moving them? I'd think so but...
This kinda sucks because the LBs I've moved are ideal for their opposite LB positions, hence the move.
Thanks for any input on this.

I've always assumed that players playing out of position suffered an unseen ratings hit, but I don't think there's any documented proof either way....

Adamski - Check out my posts in the following thread (well, the other posts in there are probably pretty helpful too). It may shed a little light on your question.
Position Change discussion (http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/~fof/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17827&highlight=position)
Hope this helps.

Ok, those posts were geared more toward FOF but still helpful.
My question is this now:
Am I better off leaving a LB at his original position and PLAYING him at another LB position or just making the switch and hoping he appreciates in time? I'd like to do the first option but am worried about him never getting better because he's still considered his original position.

It really depends, adamski. If they are young players with lots of potential and low current development, I might make the switch, as they won't be hurt too badly and should recover through playing time. If they are more developed players then go ahead and play them out of position. I have done this fairly often, as sometimes you end up with too much talent at ILB or OLB and I hate to see someone good riding the pine while I start a weaker player. I think they will still develop, but maybe take a ratings hit. You can toss them some coaching blocks to help their development, hopefully that should overcome any positional issues.

I agree with what Peregrine said. If they are young with lots of green and not too much red, then a position switch won't make too much difference. However, if they are a junior or a senior with mostly red, you're probably better off to play them out of position.
I really don't think there is too much of a penalty for playing a player out of position, especially if it is OLB vs. ILB or SE vs. FL and such.

I've had guys listed as OLB make All-American playing ILB out of position. I don't think it makes much difference at all.

In TCY if you play a CB at safety without him changing position he will have a greater chance of getting all-america CB honours, because the S position in average gets better statistical performance than the CB position. Perhaps it's the same with ILB/OLB.
I think players outside their positions are too succesful so I've imposed it on myself not to do it and start the lesser talent with the right position if injury strikes.
