Ok, this is probably a question better asked for the game review forum...but I didn't think anyone would notice it there.
Chrono Trigger for SNES was probably my favorite RPG of all time. When I heard they were making a 'sequel' for PlayStation, I was stoked...well by the time it came out, I was broke and didn't end up getting it, and my interest dwindled. That being said, I am thinking of picking it up somewhere to play it. Anyone here played it? If so, what did you think?

I loved it. In fact, Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross have been the *only* SquareSoft RPGs that I even bothered to finish.
As far as sequel goes...if I recall correctly; Chrono Cross had subtle references to Chrono Trigger. More so along the lines of dream sequences or flashbacks.
It's definately listed as a keeper on my list. If I only had an SNES to play my Chrono Trigger cartridge again... :)

My fiancee seemed to like Chrono Cross, although she never finished it. It looked interesting enough, but all those SquareSoft RPGs and their knock-offs look the same to me.

I just...could NOT get into Chrono Cross. It was somewhat fun early on, but the character development was just pathetic. I never gave a rats ass about the characters, which, well, sucks.

That's what I was afraid of (lack of character development). The fact that I heard very little acclaim for the title had me worried...I'll probably try it anyways, as I'm sure I can find it for cheap somewhere. Thanks for the input, guys.

Actually, it was pretty highly rated but didn't sell so well. Gamespot gave it a 10.0 (which is really rare) and IGN gave it a 9.7. However, people's impressions run the gammut. And, I'm talking about the "old school" rpg fans since I've long ago dismissed the mindless chatter of neo-playstation rpgers who think every hyped rpg from Square is the best thing since sliced bread. A friend of mine thinks it's the best RPG for PSX and he played pretty much everything including some of the off-the-beaten-path sort of stuff like Valkyrie Profile and the Lunar games. But another person I know really felt it didn't live up to predecessor (which might not even be a fair comparasion since many feel CT is the best RPG of all time). Opinions online are quite as widely varied. It long ago became a greatest hits game so you can pick it up for $20.
I loved CT, personally, but have really been put off by RPGs on the PSX since they revolve a lot more around graphics than around story and characters, a standard set by FF7. It's been hard for me to find a game as "fun" as some of the old games. I'll plug Kingdom Hearts here as one of the few- if you can get over the somewhat kiddie exterior, it's tremendously fun and not overly tedious. Most of all, it's very original.

Thanks SI, I agree that RPGs aren't what they used to be. Give me FF III over any PS RPG I've played. Story and character development are much more important in my opinion.
I liked Kingdom Hearts too :)

My personal favorite is FF2/4- I just love that story (tho, I think CT was the "best rpg ever"). But give me any of the Big 3 from the SNES over most anything these days.

Depending upon what day of the week you get me, FF2/4 and FF3/6 flip flop for me...both were phenomenal games. When I heard there was going to be a 3/6, my first reaction was "How? 2/4 was so perfect, they're just shooting themselves in the foot," but it did manage to sway me.
And yeah, CT is just a HAIR better than both.

Like mentioned, the character development was just too weak in Chrono Cross. There's a lot of different characters you can use, but none of them really have much of a story..

I know a lot of people loved the non-linear aspect of the story. But I think that's just lazy production: decide what you want the story to be because unless you do an awesome job, your characters will never be well developed if it doesn't happen linearly.

It was such a let down to someone whose favorite gme was Chrono Trigger. GEt Valkyrie Profile, one of the Suikodens, Grandia, Star Ocean 2, Vgrant Story, or Xenogers instead. HEll, Even Saga Frontier 2 blows it away. IT's FF8 without the great CG.

I was trying to find that Final Fantasy Chronicles game with FF2 and the Chrono game together and saw people paying upwards of $80-100 on EBay for it.
I decided it wasn't worth it

In regards to that Final Fantasy Chronicles game...I've seen it sitting on the shelf at a variety of Circuit City stores. You might want to check their online site, to see if you can order it that way if it's not there at a local CC.

Final Fantasy Chronicles, Final Fantasy Anthology, Vagrant Story, and Xenogears all went greatest hits within the past month. Seems a bit odd and they're a bit hard to find at the moment, tho. I think they figured they could still sell quite a few since a lot of us don't want to pay $60 for that used copy of Vagrant Story or FF:C. Still, they do exist as they are popping up on ebay. So, if you can find a retailer who still carries playstation games, you can pick them up for $20. I know I've been out looking for Xenogears the past couple of weeks (I have the other three).

Chrono Cross wasn't that good. Nothing at all compared to Chrono Trigger. It was okay at first, but I couldn't bring myself to finish. Just like most of the other newer Square games... all flash and no substance.
I liked both....but i will play any RPG:)
I'm playing Suikenden 3 right now...i like it much.
