View Full Version : Orioles Looking to Possibly Add Pudge

Interesting concept, although I don't know whether it makes sense to pay around $16M a year (combined) for a C and DH. Still, if one of them gets hurt, they've got a nice backup.

With Vladimir Guerrero waiting for a more attractive offer, the Baltimore Orioles are again considering the possibility of signing catcher Ivan Rodriguez.

In a winter in which the Orioles are among very few teams willing to spend big dollars, Baltimore already has signed catcher Javy Lopez, as well as shortstop Miguel Tejada. But their contract talks with Guerrero have stalled, and the Orioles are again inquiring about Rodriguez.

If the Orioles were to sign Rodriguez -- who rejected a three-year, $28 million offer from Baltimore last month -- he and Lopez would share the catching responsibilities, with both also sharing time at designated hitter. This would reduce the workload on both, and within the Orioles' organization, there is a line of thought that the extra rest could make Rodriguez and Lopez more effective offensively, and give the team extraordinary depth in the event of an injury to either.

The Orioles have offered Guerrero a five-year, $65 million contract, a deal which would dwarf any other contract concluded this off-season. But Guerrero is seeking a seven-year, $105 million contract, and the Orioles have gotten some indications that Guerrero might be reluctant to play in Baltimore. Now Guerrero is negotiating with the Mets on a three-year contract; if he were to sign with any team other than the Orioles, Guerrero would have to walk away from perhaps $40 million.

With slugging outfielders Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Beltran scheduled to become free agents next fall, the Orioles could upgrade their lineup now by signing Rodriguez to a smaller deal than they've offered Guerrero, and then pursue an outfielder after the 2004 season.

The o's should really look towards adding some pitching. They are setting themselves up to be the Texas Rangers of the NE. I think their main issue right now is not necessairly winning ballgames , but boosting attendance.

BTW - I'm not sure if you pasted that article from somewhere else, but I think some of it got cut off --- its not giving credit to anyone.

They were saying on SportsCenter this morning that the O's are going after Raffy Palmeiro too. I know that the Rangers brass would love for that to happen...

Man I wish the Red Sox had the cash to sign Guerrero.

Well if Pudge is the same after he left Texas, he hated DHing. I will be curious to see if he will accept that now. Something tells me no.

Sorry, but this really sounds like a bluff. A little smokescreen to try to force Vlad to make up his mind.

I think he did a good job last year catching the young Marlins staff. I really don't see why he'd be considered a DH?

I agree with Philliesfan... I can't name a single pitcher on the Orioles right now...

Oh I mean splitting time with Lopez behind the plate. Pudge used to get mad when he was left out of the lineup or DH'd here. He wanted to catch 162 games. I don't know if he would accept anything less than a 80/20 share behind the plate is all I mean.

Thats right, I totally forgot that they added Javy in the off season. This team is going to have alot of firepower if nothing else. I guess I'll be heading down I95 this year a few times.

It's from ESPN.com. I think maybe that Buster guy. I must have missed the last line when I cut and pasted.
