View Full Version : Superpower II: A Civilization III - Conquests Dynasty

The original "Superpower" was left unfinished, but I've always wanted to go back and try again. Since I now have the latest Civ3 expansion and a flattering Golden Scribes nomination as motivation, I'm starting over.
I like to keep my dynasties as interactive as possible, because it's more fun for me, and, hopefully, more fun for my readers. Last time, I named various military units and cities after people who read and posted. I'm going to do the same thing here, but I've decided to add a new wrinkle...
You are my cabinet.
Now, bear in mind, I'm still the H.N.I.C. when it comes to running the country, but I thought it would be cool to have a panel of advisors, and consult them regularly on matters of national importance.
Nominate yourselves as you see fit. I will select the following:
* Secretary of War
His duties are obvious. Consult on matters pertaining to military readiness and strategy.
* Secretary of Science
Will help direct the path of our technological research.
* Secretary of Trade
Chief of commerce, finance, and foreign trade.
* Secretary of the Interior
Responsible for infrastructure and national expansion.
* Secretary of State
Foreign relations advisor. Should remain aware of strengths and weaknesses of foreign powers and negotiate treaties and pacts to our advantage.
* Secretary of Security
Keep the peasants happy and reasonably safe from each other. Also responsible for intelligence and espionage.
If there is enough interest, I will allow each secretary to select an undersecretary (or 2 or 3... depending on how popular this is). I will dissolve the cabinet periodically and call for new nominations in order to allow opportunities for fresh participants.
The roles of each secretary are meant to overlap and compliment one another - so you'll have to cooperate. Greatest consideration will be given to motions presented by the group as a whole.
You may begin submitting nominations now. Please familiarize yourselves with the rules of Civ3: Conquests if you have not already. It is possible to participate without having a clue about the game, but your decisions will be more sound if you at least have a basic grasp of how things work.
The first order of business is to decide the basic game conditions and the nation we will command. I'm leaning towards Carthage, as I like the Industrious - Seafaring traits, and they have a pretty strong unique unit early in the game.
***Edit - I'm open to the potential of doing this as a PBEM game, if there's 3 or more people interested. I can't promise that I'll be able to take more than a turn a day, though - so you'd have to be patient.

So I'll just be reading, consider this a show of support. :-)

What exactly does a PBEM game entail? Would it be similair to what you have set up now or would each person have his own country?
Also, I only have the original Civ III. What expansions would I have to purchase to participate in a PBEM? Just Conquests or would it take more?
Oh...and if you just stick to your current format, I would like to be Secretary of Science... :)

Well since I'm presenting the Epic category, I decided to read your as it was one of two I hadn't read yet. Excellent job. I'd like to participate in this if I could, maybe Sec of Science, as the tech side of Civ has always been my favorite part.
Excellent concept! This will be interesting to see.

You'd need to just get the Conquests expansion. Every person would have their own country.
We've got a couple of people going for Sec. of Science... either figure it out amongst yourselves, or I'll just pick one.
I was sort of hoping The Afoci would nominate himself for Secretary of War. Our mighty nation could use a few crawfish with laser blasters instead of claws. :D

And in regards to being Secretary of Science, I am the obvious choice. Tasan's just a silly Houstonite... :D

I've never done a PBEM game before - so I'm not sure quite how a dynasty along those lines would work. I'm willing to experiment, but I don't want that to be the lone endorsement for you to go buy the game. Let me know how you feel about it.
Even if we do PBEM and it's just the two of us, I suppose we could solicit our own cabinet members and have separate "teams" to keep in interactive for whoever wants to read but can't actually play.
Anyone else interested in doing PBEM?

I'm about to head over to Wally-World to pick up the game. I had better enjoy it, dammit... ;)
It would be cool if we could get another person or two to play along with us, but your suggestion about us both having cabinets sounds like it could be interesting. I just wonder how we could do it as a dynasty without giving away too much info about our civs to each other...
Jeeber, you can download it from trygames.com and use it free for three games to see how it's like... and then buy it if you want.

Anyone who wants to do the PBEM, please e-mail me. I think we should run a "trial" game first (just go through a few turns) before we do a full-blown dynasty, just to see how it works.
The issue of security certainly is valid... public cabinet discussions would place us at a disadvantage. Perhaps the solution is to agree to an alliance of nations VS the AI - at least for the early part of the game. If we wipe out the computer, then we'll solve the privacy issue - but at that point, a clear international leader will probably have been decided.
Thoughts?

Also depends... if the three of us (are there 3 of us?) are spread out enough and are able to avoid butting up against each other, it might work out as well.

I would be up for a PBEM game. I'm pretty much a Civ novice though. I had played Civ2 a long time ago and to be honest it was the Superpower I thread that made me go out and get Civ3, that and it was basically free with gift cards from xmas. Anyways, I got the gold edition that has Civ3 and PTW combined so I don't know how that would affect anything. For example I tried to install the latest patches for the games and it I had to reinstall the game because the patches asked for the Civ3 or PTW CD to be in the drive. Which isn't what you get in my version.
Is it Conquests that you are going to do the PBEM through? I don't know if it has that feature or not but I'd be willing to pick it up if I had to. Either way let me know.

Let it be known that the mighty military of Carthage has never been defeated on the field of battle! Our forces are feared from one side of the globe to the other, and we are the paradigm of culture in an otherwise dark world. Be proud when you say you hail from the great nation of Carthage, for soon, very soon, the entire world will be in our hands.
Our technologists will soon be unveiling the secrets to our latest scientific mircale. By working with this strange yellow ore called 'Bronze', our formidable forces will indeed be unstoppable. Even know, our mighty colonists, backed by this 'Bronze', are moving to spread the Glory of Carthage to the 4 corners of the world.
Thank you.

See, here's the thing... I can play FOF2K4 at the office and get away with it. So that dynasty gets updated a lot - especially when I'm having a slow day at work.
Civ3, on the other hand, I can't play very discreetly at the office... so I'm limited to taking my turns at night. I missed last night because I'm dealing with some major family drama (father in law just died... no will... lots of bickering heirs... probate litigation... blah.. blah... blah...)
Anyhow, I took a turn tonight, and I've taken a screen shot, which I will post for my trusted advisors to evaluate later on.
In the meantime, go read the other dynasty if you've got nothing better to do. ;)

As Secretary of the Interior, I suggest we dig trenches in the land surrounding the city to transport water to the farmland. I propose we call this irrigation. (Not sure if Carthage has discovered how to do this yet, but that's usually where I start my development.)

We need more troops so we can enslave the vile enemies to do our bidding. Our trenches will be built with their bones as supports. It will be their blood which is spilled in the fields, preparing our crops. It is them that will be our caretakers for the animals we so love and fondle!

The Information Ministry wishes to make an amendment to this statement issued by our Brilliant and Ever Victorious Secretary of Defense.
This statement implies that our Mighty Ruler, FranklinNoble, is not a god himself. This is completely false. The Empire of Carthage is led by divine influence, blessed by the elder gods, but commanded by Lord Franklinnoble, God of Victory, Llamas, and Curly Fries.
Sacrifice and tribute to our leader is, of course, a regular event in every Carthagian's daily life. Our benevolent god shelters the Empire, and woe to the nation who would dare stand against the most powerful country in the world. The hand of the immortal shall smite those who oppose us, bring us wealth beyond imagination, and soon, very soon, the entire world will kneel and pay homage to the Great God Franklinoble.
Thank you for your time, people of the world. You may resume your regularly scheduled supplication.

Oh, are we singing about our capitals?
Out in the West Texas town of El Paso
I fell in love with a Mexican girl
Nighttime would find me in Rosa's cantina
Music would play and Feleena would whirl
Blacker than night where the eyes of Feleena
Wicked and evil while casting her spell
My love was deep for this Mexican maiden
I was in love, but in vain I could tell
One night a wild young cowboy came in
Wild as the West Texas wind
Dashing and daring, a drink he was sharing
With wicked Feleena, the girl that I loved
So in anger
I challenged his right for the love of this maiden
Down went his hand for the gun that he wore
My challenge was answered in less than a heartbeat
The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor
Just for a moment I stood there in silence
Shocked by the foul, evil deed I had done
Many thoughts raced through my mind as I stood there
I had but one chance and that was to run
Out through the back door of Rosa's I ran
Out where the horses were tied
I caught a good one, it looked like it could run
Up on its back and away I did ride
Just as fast as
I could from the West Texas town of El Paso
Out to the badlands of New Mexico
Back in El Paso my life would be worthless
Everything's gone in life, nothing is left
It's been so long since I've seen the young maiden
My love is stronger than my fear of death
I saddle up and away I did go
Riding alone in the dark
Maybe tomorrow a bullet will find me
Tonight nothing's worse than this pain in my heart
And at last here
I am on the hill overlooking El Paso
I can see Rosa's cantina below
My love is strong and it pushes me onward
Down off the hill to Feleena I go
Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys
Off to my left are a dozen and more
Shouting and shooting I can't let them catch me
I have to make it to Rosa's back door
Something is dreadfully wrong for I feel
A deep burning pain in my side
Though I am trying to stay in the saddle
I'm getting weary, unable to ride
But my love for
Feleena is strong, and I rise where I've fallen
Though I am weary I can't stop to rest
I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle
I feel the bullet go deep in my chest
From out of nowhere Feleena has found me
Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side
Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for
One little kiss and Feleena, goodbye
Hmmm, the hero dies in the end. Maybe that wasn't such a good song to quote...

The antelope will be within range soon enough...

Er, I may have missed one of the expansions, but what the heck are those resources down towards the bottom of that map? Did they add tobacco or something?

Tobacco got added in Conquests, as did a few others.

Just for future reference... your city would have been much more productive out of the gate with the forests and game righ next door.

Just curious if this was supposed to be sent on to me or not yet. My mailbox was full for a couple of days, so if Tasan tried to send it to me I didn't get it...
Franklinnoble

Tasan

Kevin's been largely absent from the online world lately...not sure what he's up to. Our OOTP league, the CFBL, has been on stand-by for about a week.
Vince

And of course, as soon as I post...the CFBL sims :)
Celeval

I hate to say it... but... bury it. I was kinda of joking when i said this was the Civ of 2004. But it really is looking that way :(
JeeberD
03-17-2004, 11:35 PM
I was about to, but it sounded like the other guys were interested in keeping it going as well. I don't want to keep dragging them along, forcing them to play...but I do want to keep this moving along.
I dunno...
The Afoci

Don't fear me. Keep it.
