Any experts on Win XP here?
My daughter's PC blew up this morning I had eventually to re-install Windows (anyone like to join me in a class action on Microsoft?). Eight hours later everything's back to normal except for the dialup connections. The Win XP disc recovery I used may be responsible but whenever I try to create a dialup connection the wizard takes me to the screen with a choice of three - dialup, DSL connect, DSL permanent. But the first two are greyed out. I can't proceed.
I wonder if the version of Windows that's been installed is set up assumimg the permanent DSL connection (the original installation was done at the store - who are conveniently closed for the weekend as is the PC manufacturer). I thought maybe the modem wasn't being recognised but I ran a modem diagnostic and everything reports ok.
Any ideas?

Is her modem an internal or external one?

Thanks, Baron, that site does seem to deal with the problem. Unfortunately I've carried out their instructions and deleted NextID from the register but it made no difference whatsoever. The wonderful follow up Microsoft gives for that is that I should re-install Windows all over again
At first that sounds idiotic - it was re-installing Windows that brought this about - but they say that it may be caused by the existence of a file called UNDO_gui (can't remembers the rest of it) which is created when Windows is pre-installed on a PC by the manufacturer. I've checked and that file isn't there now so maybe a new install will fix it. On the other hand they seem to imply that the installation of Service Pack one is a way of dealing with this and this was already installed before. I love the suggestion that I download SP1 from the update site - from a computer with no access to the Internet
It's an internal modem, groundhog/Hoya1, but it does seem to be communicating with the CPU. I had wondered if perhaps it couldn't find the modem and greyed out the modem option as a result. But I tried to re-install the modem only to be told it's already installed and then ran a system diagnostic which checked out the communication between modem and CPU and it reported "success" on all tests.
Looks like another install tomorrow.
I used just to despise Microsoft and Windows but now I don't have the words to express my feelings of utter disgust.
But thanks all the same, guys. If you come up with any more ideas please post. I'll log on again tomorrow morning before I start another install in the hope that something else can fix it.

I had a problem that seems like it would be similar to this.
what we did was remove the various dial-up windows components, and then reinstall them (this is done in Add/Remove Programs>Windows Components or something similar). it may not jog it back to life...but it wont hurt it either, and is relatively easy to do.
if you are going to do a full install, I think what I would do would be to remove the modem first...and then install it once Windows is fully installed.
