I've heard of it happen to other people, but for some reason this is the first time it has happened to me. READ DISK ERROR showed up when I put in Madden 2004. If any of you know how to fix this problem it would greatly help. Thanks...

The laser inside of the PS2 that reads the disks is very weak. What you have to do is open the PS2 up itself, get a nice clean cloth, get down to the laser eye thing (make sure you unscrew everything that needs to be unscrewed), wipe it off a couple times, and put it back together. It should work like new again for another 4-6 mos. Then repeat.

My brother in law found a snoy repair # and I called it up, I took mine in on a Friday, they fixed it for free and it was at my house on Monday.

Oh yeah, what they did is replace the laser eye

This is why I switched to XBOX.

Just so you know, once you open up your PS2, all your warrenties are void. So if you mess up or it doesn't fix it...you're screwed. I'd try to contact Sony first. If you don't get anywhere with them, then try cleaning it yourself.

Do people still have PS2's under warranty? The machine's been out for 3 years. I don't know how long the warranty is, but I really find it odd that people are still buying new PS2's. If people wanted one, why don't they have one by now? No, I'm not being 100% serious, but it surprises me that people still have them under warranty (unless the warranties are incredibly long).

same thing happned to mine... tried to tweak it by adjusting the white disk inside... no dice. I then tried cleaning the laser to no avail. I put it back together and went to the local video game store... they bought it for $90 and I had to pay an additional $90 to get a PS2 with progressive scan. I can now play the silver sided discs all day long... sucks though. Part of getting one early on I guess.

As an alternative to opening up the PS2, do those CD lens cleaners discs help out at all?

I dunno about entire systems, but when I had my old wavebird (Nintendo wireless controller) go bad, Target replaced it no questions asked- I just brought in and they swapped it out.

I've heard that the lens cleaners work occasionally but for the most part they do not...

I actually just got mine within the last year. I usually wait to buy consoles for the price to come down. I'm in no big hurry to buy consoles, though, because I am mostly a PC gamer. And the Best Buy warrenty lasts for 3 years, if I recall.

Same thing happend to me. I had no problems ever, then every once a while I would get the DRE...Didn't bother me too much it was usually only on burned CDs. So badass Scareface finally is rereleased on DVD and I buy it go home to play it and the DAMN THING...DISC READ ERROR!! WTF...and the thing that was pissing me off was the bonus material disc PLAYED! So I pick up my PS2, which I had purchased used 2 years ago, and am just about to throw it at the wall, smash it with a hammer and go buy X Box when I remember hearing about "the white disc." go online and find out that the lens in the PS2 is not only weak and shitty, it is too far from the CDs. Adjust "the white disc" to put lens closer to CD by like 1/8 mm. It works! Never had DRE since.
open up your PS2 (be very carefull to keep the top and bottom of PS2 close, if you mess up those wires you are screwed.)
open up cd drive towards the back there is a white disc. use a marker and mark where it is positioned now before you touch it.
turn one click clockwise, put cd rom cover back on and test.
keep doing this with different types of discs. cds, games, dvds, etc and eventually you will get no more disc read error.
sorry for the lengthy story. the disc read error just really pissed me off

1/8 mm? Your hands must be pretty steady.

Not every person who gets a PS2 does so with their own money. For that matter, not everybody who gets a game console gets their PlayStation 2 first. I know that if not for the fact that I kind of, well, needed my PS2 in order to stay current on the whole game review gig, I very well might have waited a year or two to buy one - there just wasn't that much on the market for it that appealed to me until that point, and it's still probably only the #3 system in terms of how much time I spend playing it. Xbox is far and away #1 for me, thanks to Xbox Live, and GC is #2 courtesy of games like Viewtiful Joe. My PS2 is really more of a 'work' system than anything else these days.
Long-winded way of saying "I'm really not surprised that there are still people out there buying their first PS2's."
As somebody else pointed out, the console's cost is also a factor. Would it surprise you to learn that we still have young parents coming into the store looking for new SNES/Genesis games because their kids are agitating for a video game console, and they'd rather hand down the ones they had 10 years ago than spend $100-$200 on a new one? It happens, and with surprising frequency.

as a side note freevideogames.com (or something like that) was giving points for signing up for various offers which could be used to buy a brand new PS2. I had to sign up for about 10 offers to get the right amoint of 'points'. However, I ended up buying the Sopranos 4th season DVD and a few others instead of the PS2. Oh well...

Was it easy to cancel the "services" like credit card protection and such? I was looking at freevideogames.com and it looked like I could rack up a lot of points pretty easily but if there were a lot of strings attached, well, then it wasn't worth it.

nah, not too bad. Take a note of each company, your id and other info and what terms they give you to cancel by. Then just wait a week and call each company one by one. They will hound you a bit and try to get you to stay with the month to month membership but just say 'no' about 6 times and they'll get the hint. Most of the offers are actually by 2 different companies under different guises. The worst part is the time it takes to cancel but $120 of free goods is worth 2 hours of my time...

I'm just surprised that people who want PS2's don't already have them.

Honestly, I'm not surprised that people are still looking for SNES or Genesis games, particularly if they're for relatively young children. I AM surprised (albeit a little facetiously) that adults are just now getting around to buying PS2's for themselves, particularly "technology-savvy" folks who know that the PS2 is three years old. Even in console terms, where there aren't the same constant upgrades that happen in the PC world, three years is old.
Again, I'm not being 100% serious about all this, but when I went to stores around Christmas, I was just shocked at the dozens of people buying PS2 machines.

Did you hear about the hot new system Atari has? It's called the Jaguar, it's going to kick ass like the car!
