I use the sideline skin, so for me the post count is at the top right part of the post.

LOL. Somehow, I went from over 5,000 posts to under 2,500. I have no idea how it happened nor do I care. I'm still trying to figure out why I even clicked on the link to begin with. :)

You can change that if you want....

Well...crap...I used to have over 1,000, now i'm at just above 500 posts. It shows that when I was younger and in high school I had a lot more time to post here. As time went on, I got busier and stuff. And unlike a real job where you get paid money, at school you don't have computers to post on in all of your classes. Now that I'm in college, I may post more just because I have more downtime in my dorm room (and the computer is always in the room I'm in.

I do miss the member numbers though... if only for odds or evens.

That was my thought. They used to be on the left and I just noticed they weren't there and I was excited, as I think they are useless. Oh well.

Maybe it's time to revive this idea, anyway.
Back at the original sideline, you could see a person's post count in his profile page, as I recall, but it wasn't featured prominently in every single post. Back then, there was an awful lot less discussion about post counts -- it just didn't draw all that much attention.
Maybe we could revive that model... I'd certainly welcome such a change.

I think we should make the post count appear in a large bold text and then the persons name in a small tiny text.
Just thought I would be different.

I think we should eliminate names. That way no one can look at any post different than any other. Down with the elitists! Do it for RUSS!

I still don't understand the lure of post counts. Ok, so you have 300,000 posts, but 299,990 are about trouts in rectums, smileys, and other nonsense.
Post counts are meaningless.

Then why worry about them at all. Should we not allow different handles for each person then either. Why not just name everyone member 1, member 2 and so on. If you don't like post counts, don't worry about them. No one forces you to look at them or even talk about them. I don't like hockey, should we ban threads of hockey?

Yes, we should ban hockey threads. :D My only point about thread counts is that people have 75 coniption fits when one is deleted. They have their opinion that they should remain and I have my opinion that they should go. Ultimately, it is not up to me.
I will not accept a banning. :)

Over the past several years, I have kept FOFC open during work when I shouldn't have had, stayed up to check FOFC just ONE MORE TIME for interesting posts, skipped naps to read another dynasty, poured myself into the community and the only physical thing that I have to show for it is my post count. This isn't about elitism, I am far from the FOFC elite and I have a lower post count than many. This is simply about a symbol of my commitment to this communtiy, and I'd hate to lose that.
A post count is so much more than a number. To me at least.

But it is only a relative commitment symbol. All one has to do is join one Thread-killer thread and that person's post count is way out of whack in comparison to the contribution given. I know that everyone has different thoughts as to what belongs on this board : we have purists that only want FOF discussion (I think most of them have left), others that want serious topics only, and still others that think "anything goes".
IMHO, none of these POVs are wrong, I happen to fall between serious topics (again, a subjective term) and anything goes, with a heavy lean towards anything goes because I use this board for various reasons, depending on where my mind is at. Sometimes I use it to vent. Sometimes I use it to ask a question knowning that there is a lot of knowledge present amongst the members. Sometimes I use it to comment on FOF :D Sometimes I use it because I am bored and post something inane. Sometimes I am compelled to enter into a serious discussion about politics or religion... etc. etc.
Bottom line, if you like/need to have post counts, by all means, have your post counts. I happen to think of them as the little trinkets you get from a .25 cent gumball machine, and without them, people might be more prone to only post when they really have something to say (be it silly or serious) instead of only thinking that it will boost their numbers.
To each his own :D

Like I implied, but didn;t say, I don't mean that my post counts are a measure, a way of gauging and comparing my own commitment to others. I just mean that my own post count means something to me. It shows me that I have done something real, that I have some tangible benefit to being in this community.
A flag is arguably just a piece of cloth, but it stands for so much more that that to a lot of people. Likewise, my post count means a lot more than a number to me.

And I'm glad for you, though equating a post count to a flag (especially if you were referring to Old Glory) is bit of a stretch. I guess this can be seen as yet another way each of us here is different.
