Looking through the previous thread on the subject, it appeared that most were in agreement that a fantasy universe with a preference draft would be the best way to start off. Is this still the prevailing opinion? Obviously, the best way to feel most in control of your team would be to manually draft the entire roster, but I think everyone understands the timing and logistics nightmare that would encompass.
Any opinions on the issue?

I would agree that ficitional w/ a preference is really the best option for us.

The preference draft we ran in the CFL went fairly well. I don't think we had any complaints.
I think a manual draft would probably take about 4 months anyway.

That's my stance as well. Fictional players with a preference draft.

Preference draft is probably a necessary evil, with evil being the key word. In all the test runs I've done with preference drafts the results have been horrible.

If you want an outsider's view, I agree with Daimyo. I'd recommend you guys seriously consider having 5-10 rounds live just so the owners that choose to spend some time out of their way can feel a little more a part of their team. I guess what it comes down to is weighing those who will bitch because they couldn't make the draft against those that will end up bitching that the preference draft screwed them over.
The first year is always going to be a bit of a warm-up session until you can get to free agency and the draft anyway. That's when you can start building your own team. A preference draft is just a way of getting a quick start to a league, you can't even re-negotiate with anyone since everybody's signed contract in the current year.

If we thought we could pull off a 5-10 round live draft (say on Super Bowl Saturday), that would be nice. Otherwise, pref. is the way to go. Fictional players.

To be honest, I haven't gotten much into FOF2004 as much is a was drawn into FOF2.
Why? I don't know yet, but what I do know is that it helped a lot to download the "real players" player file.
Maybe in a few weeks I have no problem with fictional, but for now I need to get to know the game better to be able to compete with fictional players.
Preference draft get's my preference.
Preference draft.
Just a quick question : How are the contracts with those preference drafted guys ?

It varies, some gets long contracts (3-5 years) and others are signed for short deals (1-2 years), a pretty good mixture I would say. But there are a lot of good players in the CFL that'll be free agents next season since we can't re-negotiate with anyone to make them stay with us... it should be a riot. :)

I would prefer a pref. draft to get us going with some momentum, but if many others want to do live for the first 5-10 players, then I can agree with that.

And dont' forget our International Friends when considering some of these things. A 5-10 round draft could take a long time and it would probably be somethine we agree should be done while Europe sleeps.

In my opinion being able to choose only 5 players isn't going to make THAT much difference in the total makeup of our teams. Ten would be a little different. While it might be nice to have a little more control, I'm of the opinion that the end doesn't justify the means. Not much bang for our buck, in other words.
I vote preference. While there isn't as much control as picking 5, 10, or all of a team's players, there is some strategy involved.
I'm for fictional players as well.

Fictional pref draft for me too.
BTW, with the latest patch you can resign those players that you drafted with one year deals.
Dutch

We can't do that in the CFL, Chubby. I wonder what we did wrong?
IRT - 10. For full or preference drafts, assign players with one-year contracts a last signing date of the previous year, allowing renegotiations.

Yeah, 3ric had me confused. In the USFL, I'm just about to sign some major extensions with some of my guys.

Well, if this holds correct, we made a mistake somewhere in patching at the CFL. I'm sure we will resolve this one quickly.

Huh. I had no idea this was fixed in a patch already, thought all leagues had this problem... :o

preference/fictional gets my vote also. it seems it's easiest, and right now we just need to continue momentum that we've built up after it appeared the IHOF was dead.
having a live draft would grind everything to a halt. i'm all for just getting my roster, and waiting till the forthcoming offseason to begin to put my stamp on the team. the more streamlined we make the first season, the more people will be into it. it's all about moving forward and getting started. preference draft makes it so that everyone gets a solid team, rather than just the owners who can be present at the live draft.

Although it would be nice to have a live fictional draft, we have three time zones worth of players in the US, plus an international contingent. Logistically, it would be next to impossible to implement. Therefore, I vote for a fictional/preference draft.
