View Full Version : All-Time Baseball Auction, Round 1 (Deadline 11:59pm 1/21)
BishopMVP
01-19-2004, 05:14 PM
Here is the first thread, http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/~fof/forums/showthread.php?p=354918#post354918 .
Official Rules:
1. The 30 challengers submit blind bids to me via PM. I will then post the current rosters for each challenger; the challenger with the highest bid on a player gains the rights to that player. Players are not up for re-bid, and in the event of a tie the player goes back in the pool. However, there will obviously be holes in challenger’s lineups (as others bid higher), so this process of blind bidding will continue until every roster is filled. Please submit them in alphabetical order by last name. These bids will be made public after every round.
2. 1 Manager and 25 players on your roster. For line-ups, no DH will be fielded. I recommend having at least 5 or 6 pitchers, but it's up to you. Any person is eligible to be chosen, so if you want to choose someone from the Japanese or Negro Leagues or even your local HS, feel free, but remember these are being voted on by members of FOFC. EDIT - No player-managers. Bids for managers and players are considered seperate, so you could have 1 person simultaneously playing for 1 team and managing another. If your manager has played in the majors, please note you want him as a manager.
3. You have 1000 points to bid. You must submit a bid of at least 1 on every player every round. The maximum is 975 for one player/manager.
4. I will post 5 groups of 6 teams, based on when you PM"ed me. The forum as a whole will vote (publicly) on which is the best in each group, and the 5 finalists will advance to another poll. I don't think there are many here who will vote for or against a certain team because the user, so each owner will have the chance to submit a post about their team to sway the voters. The voters will choose based on whatever criteria they choose, so if you choose 1-year wonders or solid 12+ year big leaguers, explain that in your post. Also, you are allowed to vote for yourself, but it will be public, so if you have 1 vote for your team and it is you, we will point and laugh.
5. Deadline for ROUND 1 will be the first time I log in after 11:59 PM EST Wednesday.
Any questions, post in the thread.

I'm in.
How many players are you allowed to bid on during each round?
BishopMVP
01-19-2004, 05:28 PM
You bid on 25 players and 1 manager every round. You must allocate 1 point to each position each round, so you don't run out. I guess you could leave a position blank, but it would make more sense to submit a bid of 1 on a hall of famer who there was almost no chance of getting than leaving a spot blank, if that makes sense.

This may be a stupid question but I'd rather it ask it now than cause you headaches down the road, do you want them listed alphabeticaly by first or last name?
BishopMVP

By last name. I'm just used to that, so it's easier than by first.
Maple Leafs

Last name, eh...
Maple Leafs: $50 on Robinson
Bishop: Which Robinson?
Maple Leafs: That depends, let me see the winning bids...

Honolulu Blue and myself have turned in rosters. I sent mine to him just in case. From now on, I'll just bold people in the first post instead of posting here when I receive rosters. Also, just in case anyone took Maple Leafs seriously, include the first name.

another question...
is our bid the "max we will pay for a player"? or a "contract offer"?
For instance, I bid 100 on player x, the next highest bid is 60. Do I get player x for 61 or 100?

Ok, I have 1 last question. Are we only allowed to submit a list of 25 players in the first round or can we submit a list of as many players as we want as long we're under 1000 points?

Does your team total at the end of your roster must equal 1000 points or can you only bid 1000 points each round?

I'm running behind a little, and have to take off for work soon. I don't get back until after the deadline, but given the deadline is at night (and I would eb doing it at night), you would most likely not be able to get to these until tomorrow anyway, right?
If you could allow me to submit me auction bids tonight post-deadline, I would appreciate it. If not, though, I understand. I would probably remove myself from the contest, as I wouldn't want to stick around while the big boys kicked my butt. ;)
Anyway, I hope that's okay. My guess is I would have bids in by 1 a.m. my time (PDT).

Don't worry Rum. I MIGHT have 1 player after the first round of auctions. :)

Same here.. I tried for a lot of steals hoping people would forget some players.

It will be interesting to see how the 1st round shakes out. The 2nd round will be much tougher as we will have a guage of how much players will go for by then...

I am afraid that I wont get anybody either

I don't want to say too much so people who haven't turned in a roster yet get an advantage, or to tempt people, but upon a quick scan through after 13 entries, ntndeacon has only 6 players. I think everyone else has at least half. There are going to be some very interesting results. Right now there are some great players going for less than anticipated, and some going for much more than I thought they would. There are even some players I've never even heard of before. Also, one team right now has most dominant rotation ever, but little hitting.
As for Chief Rum, earlier is better, but as long as you get it in by 1amPST, you will be okay. But if not, it appears entirely possible someone could come in 2nd round and still compete.
I think the way I'm going to do this is just save the excel file as a web page and upload it. Can someone explain the steps I need to go through to make it work as a link? (i.e. am I going to have to sign up for a free hotmail site or something?)

Id advise you to download a program called SmartFTP.
You will have to set up the server and password - which Im sure hotmail will give you - set up the program and you will have to upload the excel file onto the site....
then it should work, AIM me if you need help.

Quick! Someone bid 1000 on Jeremy Lee!
(He was a local high school pitcher who got drafted by a Blue Jays in about 1990, and vanished off the face of the earth.)

I sent the website to those who have turned in their rosters. Keep in mind its in progress (vtbub has sent a roster but isn't uploaded yet.) A couple other things - Chubby pointed out that I have one player going to Honolulu Blue instead of him. I'm guessing there are 2-3 more errors in there somewhere. For example, if you bid 76 and its recorded as 7 on the left, let me know. I'm not checking each teams point totals closely, but if you are caught using more than 1000 points regardless if it's my fault or yours, you will be disqualified. This doesn't mean if I record you down for 22 when you meant 2 you will be, but if you meant 22 and I record it down as 2 and you proceed to spend the extra 20 points and someone points out that you overspent, you will be DQ'ed.
Looks good Bishop-
Will this be finalized by the morning? I'm heading up to Michigan for a interview tomorrow afternoon and then I'll be visiting my family for the rest of the weekend. I'll have internet access, but would like to get this out before I leave.....
BishopMVP
01-21-2004, 09:36 PM
Yes, it will be finalized by morning (excepting any small errors.) After uploading vtbub you need to change the .htm extension to a .xls and it should work. If someone can let me know if it works, it would be appreciated.
Also, after vtbub and TroyF, the 2 blatant steals are not as blatant.

It's on the web site as an .xls, which means it's an excel file. If you don't have Excel, I could send you a copy in Microsoft Works. If you have Excel but can't load the site, try again now; I was uploading an update a minute ago. If it still doesn't work, let me know if you have excel/works and I can try figuring out a solution.

I downloaded excell 97 or something like that. Got it working fine. I dunno why my first reaction is to ask instead of just doing it myself, lol. Looks interesting, can't wait to discuss some of these picks.
