Do you have any scoop on Darious Walker? He just committed to the Irish. I know little about him other than breaking Herschel's record, but I don't know what kind of competition that was against or what kind of runner he is.

Well, he is going to ND, so he can't be that good.....:D

He played for Class AA Buford, which means that he wasn't exactly going up against the top competition that Georgia has to offer...but despite that, he seems to be a respected player...
Here a link to an AJC article about him:

Thanks.
And Grant? Among this year's Irish recruits, he's probably one of the better ones. The future looks a little lean in South Bend. But, a bandwagoner I'm not. I'll agonize when they lose and celebrate when they win. At least this kid looks like he can add some speed to the team.

And what of Atlanta Douglas linebacker Leland Jones?

He's 5'11, 200 pounds -- led his team to 3 consecutive state championships (two in class AA, one in class A, IIRC)
Former Buford High School alums include FSU receiver P.K. Sam

I don't have much to add that hasn't already been said, but since my handle is in the thread title, I thought I'd least acknowledge since I haven't really checked the board much the last few days. Walker is well-respected, considered by most to be just a slight cut below Thomas Brown, but hasn't been tested against big-time Georgia High School competition.

Dola--Just did a quick check. Buford only had one remotely close game this year, even counting the playoffs/state championship, and if I recall they didn't have many close ones the last two seasons either. In that sense, it is a little hard to predict how he'll react against defenses on his level:

Then again, IIRC, neither was Herschel Walker.
(FTR, I've got no strong opinion on Darius, I'm just saying ...)

Then again, IIRC, neither was Herschel Walker.Very true. I'm not saying that he won't be a stud, just that we can't be sure. Another example would be Mack Strong. Mack came within 3 TD's of breaking Herschel's career TD record in high school, playing against Class A competition. Mack was similarly-regarded as Darius Walker. Mack became a blocking fullback at Georgia, and has had a long career with the Seahawks since, but never became a superstar by any means. My point isn't that players from lower classifications can't make it; they clearly can. It is that it is probably a little harder to project how good they'll be. I've known some other Class A stars who got used to having a big talent advantage over the competition, and never adjusted to playing against guys of similar talent. Remember how highly-recruited Curt Douglas was coming out of Lincoln County?

That's pretty much what I was aiming at too; that concerns about "level of competition" and such really aren't too reliably answered (at least not in Georgia HS football).
