View Full Version : CM: Insane transfer bids?

I recently picked CM 01/02 back up again, and I'm about halfway through my first season, playing as West Bromwich Albion.

One of my central defenders, Darren Moore, has played well this year, but not so well as to gain a permanent starting spot; I've been using him mostly as a late substitute, with the occasional start (he picked up a one match ban for gathering 5 yellow cards fairly early, so I've eased up on him since then).

He has a listed transfer value of $2.9 million. Chelsea are scrambling to finish in the top four in the Premiership, and are currently sitting 5th (I'm in 3rd). They just offered me a whopping $9 million for Moore. Part of me says "Take the money, that's 75% of our wage bill for the season!" The other part of me says "What do they see that you don't? Keep him."

Help!

If I have a good depth at a position, I usually sell then use the money to strengthen the rest of the squad. Sounds like an opportunity to me since he is not even starting. Without knowing more (his history of performance, age, years left on contract), I would definitely let him go. If that was the first offer out of the gate, you may want to even push the bid up a bit. I wouldn't look back afterwards. Even if he does very well, I am sure the player(s) you picked up with the cash will more than make up for it.

I ended up keeping him...for now. Mostly because Arsenal and Leeds are now both listed as interested in him. I figured with three teams in the hunt for him, it'd be foolish to bite at the first lure that swims past.

He got a goal in the first leg of the League Cup semis to give us the 1-0 victory, so at least for now, it's looking like I made the right move.

That, and we're finally profitable for the year, after spending much of it $1 mil in the red, so I'm no longer quite so cash-hungry as I was.

If he is not starting (or won't be starting soon) I would still let him go after you push his bid as high as possible to Arsenal or Leeds. I find the quickest way up the ladder is selling high and buying low (duh) (even free transer/high wage works). You may be holding yourself back by keeping him.

Yeah, I know. If I had been in D1, I'd have taken that money in a heartbeat, but with Chelsea just a couple places behind me, it made a no-brainer into an agonizing choice.

Still, we'll see if Arsenal/Leeds are simply watching for his contract expiry, whether he really IS drawing that kind of interest on the world stage, or whether Chelsea were just desperate to secure a place in Europe.

I'd sell. And buy a replacement for cheaper. Huzzah! :D

On the more serious side, the computer will sometimes make offers based on the internal "potential" ratings and internal reputation. (Damn but they sound like the Dodgers, don't they? Bitter yet?) So you'll occasionally see some inexplicable expensive offers. Unless they're playing or doing well for you, I'd go for it. I've had the same thoughts and done the same thing (turned down the offer while trying to figure out what the deal is) and end up getting less money via Bosman.
