OT: Computer monitor question

Does a 17" flat panel monitor have the same viewable surface area as a 19" CRT monitor?

For my online poker playing, I frequently play four tables simultaneously. With the resolution set at 1200 X 1600, I can fit all four tables on the 19" CRT with no overlap. I was wondering if I would be able to do this with a 17" flat panel monitor.

Any expert opinions are appreciated.

All monitors are sized up by pixels. The pixels are bigger or smaller based on the size of the monitor. So if you are running 1024x768 on one monitor, you will see the same thing on a smaller or bigger monitor that is running 1024x768 resolution.

And Office Depot has a 19 in. monitor on sale for $100 this week, you should go with that. A 17 incher is only $20 cheaper... I might pick this up if I can get my sister to pay me $50 for my monitor now.

Dutch is right, 1600*1200=1600*1200 no matter what you use to display it. Changing your resolution shouldn't damage your hardware but most LCDs run at a "native resolution" and may not support 1600*1200. My 17" LCD does 1280*1024 and I haven't really played with it enough to say what it would do at 1600*1200 but I don't need the screen space. LCDs that run 1600*1200 are generally pretty expensive.

A lot of LCDs will only run good at their "set" resolution. Most 17" ones are 1280*1024 and will have distortion/tearing at higher resolutions.

I have a two monitor desktop, one at 1600x1200 (19 inch) and one 1024x768 (15 inch) that I use for online poker. Gets a bit crazy, but its fun :)

Playing four tables at once, I usually see around 250 hands per hour, which equals about 7 hours of live play at a casino. I'm averaging 6 BB per hour at the 3/6 tables. It does get hectic at times, kind of like playing speed chess.

I appreciate the compliment, but I doubt whether or not it's accurate. I consider myself an above average player. I will not hesitate to get out of a game if I think it's too tough.
