OT: Another good war film "Stalingrad"

I caught this at Blockbuster the other day. It is in German with English subtitles. Very graphic, but realistic with weaponry, vehicles and tactics of the WWII era. This movie is a bit of a change as it is from the German SS perspective.

If you ever catch it and like WWII realism, check it out.

I have the directors cut of Das Boot. I saw the original also, but I have heard it was originally a 6 hour TV version. I haven't seen that yet.

as I recall, the movie (Stalingrad) did a great job of showing the drawn-out horror of the battle, much better than drivel like Enemy of the Gates. It was interesting to see the battle from the perspective of the Wehrmacht, as separate from the Nazis and the Soviets.

Stalingrad was a great movie. I am a big ww2 buff. Stalingrad stopped the German advance and prevented them from winning the war. D-Day broke their back and created their collapse. Historically, Stalingrad was to the European Theatre what Midway was to the Pacific one. Stalingrad was also probably the worst-case scenerio for modern warfare for those involved. Literal hell-on-earth. Cross of Iron is supposed to be a classic, but I have heard no good copies of it remain to dvd it from.

By the way, rumor has it that Combat! the tv series is supposed to come to dvd sometime in 2004. "You knock it off!"

I think Stalingrad would be my #1 war film of all time, backed by The Bridge, Saving Private Ryan, Cross Of Iron, and Das Boot.

One war film that I think is overlooked....Wake Island VERY good flick. course Saving Private Ryan and Platoon are both excellent

"A Midnight Clear" is a surprisingly good yet little known war movie as well. If you like war movies, I think you would like this one.

What a tremendously depressing movie Stalingrad was. It took me a week to get over that. Hard to imagine what it was like. I believe the movie was made by the same guy that made "Das Boot".

A Midnight Clear is an excellent movie. I think it falls more under character study than strictly a war movie, since few characters are involved. But it is well done, I've watched it several times. Stalingrad is also an excellent movie. It was done as an anti-war film by a German director, and is extremely effective as what it is. As GB says, it's very depressing, very "real face of war" and really brings home the hell on earth that Stalingrad was.

Dola - For those interested in the history of Stalingrad, an informative and very readable book is 199 Days - The Battle for Stalingrad by Edwin Hoyt. It really gives the big picture and also details the bloody building to building fighting. It's not a good academic resource but it's very good for the general reader with an interest in the battle. 3 million lives lost in the Stalingrad campaign, unbelievable.
