I originally posed this question over in the strategy forum, and got nothing, so I'm re-posting it here:

What's a good "measuring stick" for combine scores? I see lots of numbers, some higher than others, some lower, but I have no idea what's a "good" score supposed to look like - what sort of Solecismic test score should my QB have? What's a good agility score for a CB? Etc, etc...

I don't really use a measuring stick. I usually go with ratings. When it is close between 2-3 players, that is when I look at the combine scores. Speed always matters. Strenght matters with lineman and linebackers. Solecismic test for QBs. Agility for skill positions (secondary, RB, WR, QB).

Dola--

Yup. 80+ views here, and only one apparently-unresearched response. 300+ views in the strategy section and no responses.

How do you measure a measuring stick?

Do you use another measuring stick? How do you measure that one?

I don't know whether this will help you much or not. I can only offer my own tendencies after some 50 or so seasons, nothing painstakingly researched or documented, just some personal rules of thumb that have worked pretty well for me.

The draft is what the draft is -- a year's crop of prospects is all that's available in the given season, so I don't do much in the way of comparing their combine scores against any other year's. What I do compare are some of those combine scores among the potential draftees. Like everybody I guess, I love those high Solecismic scores for QB's, I like backs & receivers with killer 40's, linemen that are strong as diesel trucks. QB test scores & OL/DL strength scores are the only ones that I'm pretty particular about.

For QB's, low to mid 30's aren't too hard to find if you look. And I'll take that guy over a 20 Sol. test who may be rated 5 points higher for current or potential. I'm even pickier about linemen being 30+ strength, upper 20s mininmum. From what I've seen, raw power makes up for bad technique more than good technique makes up for very low power.

I don't really get too concerned about agility or 40 times with early picks, I base those on what I value most from the skill set (elusive & avoid drops plus some speed for RBs, avoid drops above all else for WR's, etc). But when I get to the bottom of the draft & I'm looking for those high volatility guys in a skill position, I resort by 40s pretty frequently & then click thru until I find the fastest guy who has an acceptable risk set of scouted skills. I have no benchmark to offer for consideration there, I treat 40s & agility drills strictly for relative comparisions to the rest of the available draft pool.

All that said, I don't pick by the combine scores, I just use them to eliminate or qualify possible picks. One I've culled the herd a bit, then their scouted skills almost always carry more weight with me than anything the combine shows.

I'm assuming those Solecismic ratings have some kind of relation with the player's intelligence rating? I haven't really looked into either, as I haven't had much time to mess around with FOF2K4 lately...but those Solecismic ratings have been something I've been wondering about myself...
