View Full Version : NBC Poker Tournament at 3 central
Poker fans dont forget that NBC will be airing a poker tournament with winners from last season's WPT today at 3 central time. Im excited to see a major network poker tournament for the first time. Should be huge for the game.

Yes, this will no doubt improve the fishing report. :D
Agree. Doesn't hurt that party poker is the primary sponsor for the lingerie bowl either.

My former boss is the chip leader at the start... From my first "real" job.. Ron Rose...
i'm still shocked.

The clock they have is annoying. They're trying to make is suspensful and they're just making it worse.

It looks like they are trying to turn it into Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Ugh.
I haven't watched WPT on the Travel Channel too much, usually because when I flip over it's usually at the beginning of some feature about the fountains in Rome.
Also, since I don't watch WPT, is the "color" guy on this telecast the usual guy? He sounds like he got rejected from tryouts for providing color on WWE Raw.

Tough beat for the Finn. Rose drew out on the river to hit his flush.

Yes, these two guys are the regular commentators.

Congrats to your former boss. He played pretty well.

I don't like the clock, but after watching this (about my fifth WPT event I have seen) I have reached a different conclusion. I am really turned off by the fact that the two commentators insist on speaking breathlessly and gushingly about every move that any player makes. If he plays conservatively, they fawn over how he's "not taking chances here, that's what the great ones do..." and when he makes a reckless play then say "he's making a big bold move here, this is what high level poker is all about." The simple fact is that they just feel compelled to constantly reinforce to the audience how wonderful these players are, and how special the event is... and it gets awfully tiresome.
Very true. I prefer the subdued commentary of ESPN's WSOP presentation. Still WPT's presentation is a lot better than, say, FOX's two extremes: Late Night Poker which puts me to sleep, and their Showdown at the Sands coverage which was actually more over the top than WPT thanks to Jessie May on speed.

LOL. Yeah, his Showdown at the Sands coverage sounded like he was covering the WWE.

Jessie May is absolutely BRUTAL to listen to.
"HE CHECKS!"
"HE's CALLING WITH A PAIR OF DUECES!"
I wasn't nutty about those announcers yesterday either, definitely WWE wannabes. It's amazing just how good the WSOP coverage looks by comparsion. At least they would outright criticize guys for making ridiculousy risky plays... but of course "THAT'S WHAT HIGH-LEVEL POKER IS ALL ABOUT!"

I can't believe that nobody has mentioned Shana Hyatt's question to Howard Lederer after he got knocked out. "What were you thinking on that last hand?"
Lederer looking confused "I was hoping he wouldn't call I had a six high!"
Sideline reporting doesn't get any better than that ;)

Howard Lederer and Norman Chad are easily the best color guys working right now...
And just as an aside...I heart Daniel Negreanu. I love his unconventional approach and disdain for folks who "play by the book"...

...thanks to Jessie May on speed.
Hmm, just out of curiosity, does this happen to be the same guy who wrote Shut Up and Deal?

I thought Rose was playing pretty conservative towards the end...but, it obviously worked.

I didn't see the end (but taped it)... Seemed like he would have really had to blow it or get incredibly unlucky to lose with that stack. (I stopped watching as soon as it went heads up).

Best lines I heard from Norman Chad:
on Amir Vahedi horribly going to far with a bluff - "He should get a poker D.U.I."
on Phil Helmuth's "know it all" whining, "The last time Phil was wrong about something, the Cincinnati Kid was still a kid."

Both some of his finer moments from the tourney. He was just going off on Vahedi during that one (horrible) play which spawned the "Poker D.U.I." quote. "He's not drawing dead - he's drawing six feet under."
Also, all the coverage of the Helmuth - Sam Grizzle table was great. I believe T.J. Cloutier was also at that table.. I recall Norman Chad pretty accurately stating "T.J. just looks like he wants to punch somebody."
I've just caught Late Night Poker for the first couple times this week... and this is clearly at the very subdued end of coverage. In fact, it almost made the game feel boring beyond belief. I think Late Night Poker and WPT are on absolutely opposite ends of the spectrum, while WSOP finds a really nice spot in the middle.
Oh, and I guess Jessie May is a tad more tolerable when whispering on Late Night Poker. The guy was absolutely torturous on Showdown at the Sands.

Don't know how I missed this one the first time. My all-time Norman Chad favorite quote from the WSOP:
"You don't want to give Phil Ivey more chips. It's like giving Charles Manson the keys to your house."
