Interesting stuff. If you've ever read his HOF wrap-up over the years, it was clear this guy was pretty pissed off after each and every voting year of voting. I guess he's finally had it.

Upset and frustrated with the Pro Football Hall of Fame's selection process and a failure to get former Cowboys star Bob Hayes inducted, veteran writer Paul Zimmerman has resigned from the Hall's Senior Selection Committee.
The committee nominated Hayes and former Oakland Raiders offensive lineman Bob Brown; only Brown won induction to the Hall of Fame Saturday. Brown, Carl Eller, John Elway and Barry Sanders received the necessary votes from the 39-member Board of Selectors needed for enshrinement.
"Why should we knock ourselves out all summer and present these guys just to have these assassins sit in a room and stick a knife in their back?" Zimmerman, a longtime Sports Illustrated writer, told The Dallas Morning News. "I'm not going to be their dancing bear anymore."
Hayes, a double Olympic sprint champion who went on to redefine the role of wide receiver, made it farther than ever in the selection process than he ever had before but still fell short.
His family believes his problems with drug addiction after his retirement in 1975 hurt his chances, even though he had turned his life around long before he died in September 2002.
Could the fact that Hayes played for the Cowboys be a factor? Many Dallas fans believe former members of "America's Team" have been slighted in the Hall voting over the years. Two other ex-Cowboys were also rejected this year: safety Cliff Harris and tackle Rayfield Wright. Harris made the final 10, while Wright advanced to the final six. A maximum of six can be elected in any given year.
"Who knows the twisted thinking ... in that room? There's probably some twisted Cowboys bias there," Zimmerman told The Morning News. "There are more Cowboys who deserve it. Chuck Howley deserves it. Lee Roy Jordan deserves it. But God forbid you propose those guys after what they did to these guys."
Other members of the Board of Selectors don't believe there is a conspiracy to keep the Cowboys out.
"I hope there isn't a bias," said Don Pierson of the Chicago Tribune, "but when you look at the results, you have to raise the question."
It was only the second time in the last 12 years the Hall did not have a class of at least five members. In the last 20 years, the average Hall of Fame class has been 5.1 inductees.
It will probably be years until Hayes, Wright and Harris are considered again.
Players have 25 years from the time their careers end for consideration on the regular ballot. This was the 25th year for Wright and Harris. It was the 28th for Hayes. Now, only the Senior Selection Committee, which nominates two players each year, can nominate them.
Critics of Hayes point to his low number of receptions (371) and his poor postseason totals: 10 receptions, 128 yards and no touchdowns in eight playoff games.
"I think he's in the Hall of Very Good," Sports Illustrated 's Peter King told The Morning News. King voted for Wright as a finalist but not Hayes. "I just don't think he did enough over a long enough period of time to be a Hall of Fame player."

Then again, maybe we should invite him to join our board, he may fit in.

All these writers are pompous asses. Entry into the hall of fame should either be decided by those that are currently in the hall, or the fans. Why give these media pricks that kind of power?

How can a player that completely changed the way the game is played not be Hall worthy? Its not like he didn't have good stats either. Add that to the lower passing numbers in the time period, and the fact that both Steeler wideouts from that same time are in, and I can't see how you pass up on the guy. Hall of Farce is more like it.

Maybe having the fans decide who gets into the hall of fame will do a little to make the players appreciate who's paying their meal ticket.

Exactly it's a popularity contest. Apply that to a HOF and it doesn't work...
Yao would be elected over Shaq to the HOF...
Anyhow the issue specifically in the NBA is sheer volume. There are just far more Chinese voters who would vote for Yao over Jabbar, Chamberlin, Bird and Magic...
You obviously have a different take on fan voting so I don't see discussing this any further...

Back in the days before the Internet, fan voting was conducted at the actual ballparks. You had to actually show up and watch a game to vote for an all-star.
If the hall of fame voting were handled in this manner, I don't see a problem. Take away a billion chinese internet votes, and your volume issue is settled.

Hayes 132 371 7514 20.3 71
Stallworth 165 537 8723 16.2 63
I don't see how Stallworth is worthy, but Hayes isn't. Hayes just barely averaged fewer catches per game than Stallworth and avaeraged more Yards and had more TD's than Stallworth.
And has already been noted he completely changed the way his position was played. That alone should get him in, but if not the fact that his numbers are very comparable to Stallworth's

But most people here seem to be content with just looking at the career stats and saying "no."
By this same measure, so many current average players would be first ballot material. Larry Centers should be a first-ballot hall of famer based on reception stats.
There is a lot more than statistics, but most people (HOF voters even) don't care. I think Peter King is clueless, and his quote just shows his obsession with bottom-line statistics.

I would love to see them get rid of the min/max for Hall of Fame classes. What if the voters feel no one is eligible to go in a specific year? Also I think this might get rid of one of my pet peeves. The guys who are eligible year after year and all of a sudden 10-15 yrs later they are voted in. What exactly did Carl Eller do between 1986-2004 that made him more eligible than his first year?

There are clearly a ton of politics involved. Each year writers (generally from the local city) basically sponsor a guy and argue his case. I guess some years they are more persuasive than others.
Why didn't Parcells go in first-ballot? Even if he was going to return to coaching at some point, was he not hall of fame worthy?

A fan vote for the HOF has is one of the worst ideas I have heard in recent memory. If this happened Michael Vick could retire tommorow and make it in overwhelmingly. Regardless of the fact that he hasn't played enough years to be eligible, you get the picture. It would become a popularity contest, even moreso than it is right now.

It seems to me that the analysis of baseball stats has progressed far more than that of football (and probably the other sports as well, although I don't know), so while I've got the ability to read all sorts of stuff about baseball stats, and what they mean, and new stats to evaluate and compare players, football seems devoid of this kind of thing, to its detriment, I believe.
For instance, someone (either in this thread or the other one about Art Monk) suggested that Hayes' 30+ receptions a year was somewhat comparable to what Jerry Rice/Randy Moss does in this age of "pass-happy" football. Does football have a Bill James-type person(s) who has tried to quantify the normalization of stats between different eras of football, like we have in baseball? And if not, why not? Shouldn't someone with far more brains than I have, be able to come up with a formula that can tell me, with some reasonable justification, that a 35 reception, 680 yard season in 1965 is roughly equivalent to an 85 reception, 1,100 yard season in today's game?
I understand there are variables that make this difficult, some unique to the game of football, but I highly doubt it was a piece of cake in baseball, either.
Does something like this exist, or is someone out there even trying to do this? Seems like a good niche for a stat-head who wants to make a Bill James-type impression on the evaluation of football players, even solely for historical purposes. I admit that I'm not knowledgeable about statistical evaluation in the world of football, so maybe something like this exists and I am unaware of it.

I'll dance around the subject a bit. Whether or not a person belongs in the Hall of Fame depends on:
1) How many people should be in the Hall
2) How many people should be inducted in an average year
3) The quality of people already there
4) Players (if any) who are in the Hall who shouldn't be there
I will talk about my feelings on baseball's HOF for a bit. I think the right number of players is about 2 a year since 1876, which would make roughly 250 players - about what we have now. Baseball players are fairly easy to evalute, because we have offensive and defense/pitching stats for all of them. They don't always tell quite the correct stories about how good a player they are, but we have tools to adjust for most of them.
Now to football. I don't have a good feel for how many should be in or how many should be inducted, but since the modern average is 5 a year, let's run with that for a bit. It's my feeling that, rightly or wrongly, players are given much more credit for playoff and championship games than baseball players. Also, the game and its players have changed a lot in a relatively short period of time. And while some positions have good stats that can be reasonably used to compare and evaluate players, many positions have limited or no stats.
With that, I'll stay out of this debate and the related others.

What you say is true, it was an AFL thing. Of course, it may have gone the way of the wishbone offense and the 5 man defensive line if it wasn't for Bob Hayes being Bob Hayes when he was. With him coming into the NFL when he did, it basically "invented" the scheme for the NFL.

Say "adopted" in your last sentence and I'll buy it you are closer to the truth.
The simple fact is that it was invented to stop passing oriented attacks - and ones that had nothing to do with Bob Hayes. I would argue that the move towards passing oriented offenses - and thus defenses to stop them - would have evolved in the NFL even if Bob Hayes had never existed. That was more a result of the AFL, and the public's positive response to that style of play, than of a single, if ungodly fast, player.
Taking that into account, the whole "the game changed because of him" argument does not really hold water, and Hayes' HoF candidacy loses a little luster. His only real claim is the TD numbers - which, based on the standards of the time, were unprecedented.

But you can attempt to break down baseball that way as well. How was a particular hitter pitched, what was the defensive alignment, etc. They've taken something like ballpark and been able to quantify the effects. At some point, you just take the information you have and try to make sense of it. I'm not suggesting baseball analysis is correct, but at least someone's trying. No one appears to be doing even that much with football stats.

Because I think Monk was one of the best at his position during the 80's, and that's the whole point. You have to compare him against his contemporaries, and against the all-time greats. The bottom line is he caught more passes in the 80's than any other WR, and won two Super Bowls (3 if you count the 91 Super Bowl) - and played in another. Aside from that, at one point he was the all-time leader in passes caught.
He wasn't flashy, and he wasn't a constant deep threat. He didn't change the nature of the game. But those cannot be the only qualifications for a WR (or any other player) to be in the hall of fame.

I'll spot you Largent and Rice (I figured on those two... that's why I asked for 3 ;)), but I'll have to respectfully disagree with the other four. None of them were as good as Monk over as long a period of time. The closest argument would be Clayton, but you have to take into account the fact that he played in a pass-happy Dan Marino-led offense, while Monk played for several different QB's in an offensive system that emphasized rushing more than passing.

I mean, that's basically how Stallworth and Swann got in, isn't it?

If this is the strength of your argument, you don't have one.

Fuck it, I'll bite anyway. Better receivers than Monk during the same era (all of these players shared at least 6 common years of playing time).
Mark Clayton
Sterling Sharpe
Gary Clark
and the obvious
Steve Largent
Jerry Rice
edit: and i'll even throw Henry Ellard in there.
You're kidding, right?
Clark was a clear #2 to Monk, on the same team, even. Sharpe was more talented, and more productive during his career, but did not play long enough. Clayton is a different debate - I feel he was an average player with good stats due to Marino, others disagree.
Rice - umm, yes.
But I do not understand how you put Largent ahead. He was a very similar player to Monk, doing many of the same things, just not as well, or as long. His one claim to fame was the receptions record, which Monk eclipsed. If getting lots of receptions is good enough to get Largent in the Hall of Fame, why not Monk?
EDIT: I actually think Reed, Lofton and Ellard belong in as well, so where they are rated relative to Monk is irrelevant.

Why? Monk has the titles, and better career numbers than either man. What else does he need?

I think the # of times in the top 10 of a statistic is pretty telling. It's an objective comparsion to the players in the league with you. Monk doesn't fare too well in that category.

To have actually had more than 3-4 good years. His best years aren't even amazing by any stretch of the imagination. People love to stand on his all-time numbers, but only once did he lead the league in any receiving category. He just played long enough to collect the reception record.

Well, we can argue this until we're blue in the face. There's no "formula" for entrance into the hall of fame, just the opinions of the writers who vote them in. My opinion is that Monk belongs, and I think he has qualifications that are as good or better than the majority of the WR's that are already in the hall. Obviously, others disagree, and that's cool with me; but I'd rather have someone with more qualifications than a group of jackass writers deciding who gets in and who stays out. Either let the hall veterans decide, let the coaches decide, or let the fans decide - not a bunch of f*cking elitist writers who are using this as some kind of pathetic power trip.

I think Monk has *some* merit, but I really dislike the "guys who are already in there" argument. I think everyone would admit there has been some weak HOF selections in the past... I just don't see the need to continue that trend by putting in more weak players because of it.

Dr. Z quits the Senior Committee? The same guy that kept ensuring every single 1970's Steelers make the HoF regardless of worth? And he quit because Hayes did not get in?
What a maroon.

That's kind of a stretch, don't you think? I assume that you're talking about Stallworth and Swann, but neither of those gentlemen were inducted as a Senior Candidate. Swann retired in 1982, making him ineligible for Seniors consideration until 2007. Stallworth retired in 1987, barring him from being a Senior until 2012. Then again, maybe you're just blowing off steam. Can't tell from here. :)

I think the # of times in the top 10 of a statistic is pretty telling. It's an objective comparsion to the players in the league with you. Monk doesn't fare too well in that category.
Bingo!

Yeah, he's been harping on this for years. People will listen to the presentations, not raise a single objection or doubt - then vote the guy down.
At least have the balls to say WHY you won't vote for the guy! Christ, if there is any committee where everything should be absolutely out in the open, this is it.

One great season and he breaks a career record? Come on. And as pointed out above, it makes the "no great seasons by any stretch of the imagination" a ridiculous claim.
I do think any player who sets both the single season and career records for any statistic not driven by the foot during his career should be in the hall of fame, yes. But, then again, I am probably in favor of a looser hall of fame than most people as I think all of Reed, Ellard and Lofton should be in, just with Monk at the top of that list.
Funny how people's perceptions color these arguments. One of the arguments people have been putting in the 'Art Monk for HoF' con side is that he was never thought of as one of the best at his position during the time he played. I remember him as, and remember him being talked about as by commentators, not one of the best, but THE best (until Rice had been around a while) WR in football during his playing days.

Actually, that would have been Largent. Largent was the only clear Hall of Famer from that group. I'd have taken Lofton's yards over Monk's receptions. And I'd have taken Largent's #2 staus in both categories and his 100 career recieving TDs long before both of them.

It is a fact that of that group Largent is clearly the best. Just because there are a few misguided broadcasters that didn't see it, doesn't change it. Most people think that gravity pulls harder on an anvil than on a feather-- that doesn't make it true.
And nearly every announcer I remeber during Jerry Rice's career compared him to Largent or took it all the way back to Don Hutson or Lance Alworth or somebody.
I do remember a few people talking about Monk's greatness. But-- obviously-- statistical analysis wasn't any of their strong suits. Plenty of broadcsters are enamored with 'veteran leadership', 'character', playoff appearances amg other such irrelavancies to the evaluation of individual players.

Unless I'm missing something:
Largent had more than twice as many All-Pros as Monk, 50% more touchdowns, more yards, a significantly higher YPC stat, and many more top 10 stat finishes while being a contemporary player.
People can have a different opinnion than I have about who was the greater player.
They just can't have a valid one...
I never said that Monk has no case for the Hall. He doesn't make it in my opinion, though.
But how can anyone reasonable look at Monk's career stats and Largent's career stats and come up with Monk as the better player?

Yes (blowing off steam). For quite a few years, it was a source of frustration as to the apparent slamdunk-ness of 1970s Steelers, to the point that it became a running joke about this time of year.

I never said Monk was better than Largent. For his era, I'd put him third behind Rice and Largent. And I think he's better than Swann or Stallworth. I'm sure if someone were to find and post the names of all the other WR's in the hall, we'd find quite a few that Monk surpasses.
Samdari has a point. Some of you may not remember, but as Monk was on pace for Largent's receptions record (this was before Rice had been christened as the greatest of all time), many people talked about Monk in the same manner that people now talk about Jerry Rice. It's just a fact - no need to argue about it. Of course, his career numbers have been eclipsed, but for his era, he was clearly one of the best, and I think if you had asked anyone in 1988 if Monk belonged in the Hall of Fame, you would have heard little dissent. Unfortunately for him, many receivers who played since the late 80's enjoyed pass-happy west coast offensive systems, and career receiving stats have experienced the same sort of inflation that home run stats have in baseball.

But how can anyone reasonable look at Monk's career stats and Largent's career stats and come up with Monk as the better player?
By watching them play and realizing that Largent had nowhere near the skills of Monk. He was the only weapon on a team almost completely devoid of NFL caliber talent. Monk was on a run based offensive powerhouse, and thus got far less plays called in his direction.
People can have a different opinnion than I have about who was the greater player.
They just can't have a valid one...
So, let me see if I get this straight. If an opinion disagrees with yours it is invalid? Only the criteria you think matter are the ones that matter, and thus only those criteria determine greatness?

Why choose 10 as a number? Its kind of arbitrary, no? Why not 8, 12, 15? Monk finished 11th in receptions 3 times in his career. Considering one of his prime years was a strike year, those 8 years stack up against a similar stretch of anybody's career, except Rice.
