As if I'm not being random enough today...here's another random question/thought.
What do you all think of the new generation of military tv commercials. Especially the Army has changed their campaign a ton.
I remember when the Air Force was changing their logo and the whole deal. I like the new set of commericals they've come out with. Doesn't seem like the Marines have changed their around a whole lot, but they never have to..they're the Marines. Hehe..people do that because they want to.
Thoughts?

The Navy is cutting back on jobs, and has met it's recruiting goals all ready this fiscal year (fiscal starts in October). This was met in part by a lowered recruiting goal, the change in advertising, and a huge effort for retention of current members of the Navy.
The cut back in jobs will actually keep members wanting to "Stay Navy" (ads normal civilians never see; you'll find these on AFN) from staying in the Navy. I have already seen first hand the difference in just 3 years.
Almost 3 years ago, I was given a nearly $40,000 dollar reenlistment bonus for six years (broken up and paid along the years). Last year in the Persian Gulf, a friend of mine in the same rate and pay grade reenlisted for 6 years and I believe, $4,000. Now, people in my field do not receive bonuses for reenlistment, at all.
In fact, I am in school right now where I went to school originally 6 years ago (I will eventually be an instructor here). Back then, the school house was jammed pack, with three shifts of students (days, nights, and mids; of which I was a midnight student) and 25 per classroom.
Today, there is one shift, and new classes form once a week. Hardly the speed of 6 years ago.
I do believe I won't be given the option of reenlistment upon the completion of this enlistment, which ends May 29, 2007.
The joke in the fleet is that the Navy if finally go to the rock and roll (for advertising), when that's all we've been doing the whole time.
That said, recruiting advertising had absolutely nothing to do with the fact I joined the Navy.

Same here. Air Force advertising had nothing to do with why I went into the Air Force. I just noticed the flashier advertising and how they're getting slicker, of course, because they're getting real companies to do the work. But still..
But any slight enticement there was for me to stay in the Air Force was overrided by the fact that I liked where I was, but everyone I worked for was leaving, going elsewhere or whatever. Plus, I just really needed to be back in the civilian world again. It's been almost 2 years since I've been out and it seems like a long, long time ago. Weirdness..

I imagine you'll be seeing a cutback in the advertising all around.
The AF is running into the same thing as AE mentioned with the Navy. We're about 16k jobs over our budget so they're trying to cut back whoever they can.
Doesn't bother me though, I plan on jumpin ship as it is. The way things have been going, it looks like the AF is going to contract out about any technical job here real soon, so it's time to get out while the getting is good and go to college.

I always like the Marines commercials the best. They had good music.

Same here. I just wanted to go out and see the world and am grateful for the decision I made. Saw alot of places and made some good friends that I would never had done if I stayed in AL.

I liked the one where the guy had to get through that obstacle course thingy, than he had to fight a fire dragon. Only after that did he become a Marine, now that was a good recruitment commerical.:D

I don't know which branch it is for, but in one of the commercials, the're playing a song from Machine Head's first album. Good choice.

Doesn't the Air Force use Godsmack in one of their commercials? Now that's what I call some inspiring music...

I think the Navy should have gone ahead with plans to use music from the Village People in their advertising.

You mean they didn't?

Don't worry you guys. Too many people in your service? They'll run an early out program soon. They'll let all of the high-flying, smart and dedicated people out early, and keep all the dirt bags.
Then in a couple of years when they've discharged (or jailed) all of the remaining dirt bags, they'll need heavy recruiting again. Happens all the time.

Two years ago, while I was still in command, the Army ran out of reenlistment money in August. So for two months, virtually no one reenlisted.

To put it quite simply.
Yes.
I'm not sure, it really depends on what's going on in your life and what you have planned if it's the right call. I don't regret joining for a minute, even though I'm trying to get out early now. :) Great experience, you'll meet some great people(and bad ones), and get to see some places you'd probably never get to. Get a certain feeling you won't get at any other job as well, highly recommended.
Sadly though, what Flame Eater said is pretty much spot on. That seems to be the case right now.
It has its cycles, that's for sure.

anyone else have thoughts?
Joining the Navy can be fun if you're single and don't mind leaving your home port/family behind. I can go to sea every day of my life if I wasn't married, but I am. Sea time is extremely difficult if you have a spouse.
The upside is I've been to 10 different countries, and we tend to see "liberty ports", where as I'd assume the Air Force doesn't have many "liberty ports" as they have "bases".
Not downing the Air Force, I would have gone into the Air Force if I could have. Just an observation.
That said, the Air Force would be the more lucrative option if you have a family. At least it appears that way from the outside looking in.

The Army has had its share of cuts, most notably under Clinton. I was getting ready to leave Germany when I saw the email about the Army running out of Reenlistment money for that fiscal year, and I actually would have been re-upping in that time frame, but instead decided to reclass into job that was understrengthed at the time....bad move in hindsight, but I won't get into that.
The Army decided it needed a "cooler" image with people coming out of high school, that's what lead to the "Army of One" slogan and the current commercials. I don't pay much attention to them, so I really can't comment further.
I'm currently working at my 1st joint service assignment (training doesn't count) and things are quit different than I'm used to. It's nice to work with different people, I actually only see a couple Army people a day.
With that said, I'm probably done after this enlistment. Nothing to do with the Army, I've enjoyed things up to this point, I've been to some nice places (some nicer than others) and I have job training I couldn't get anywhere else in the world, its more about taking the next step in life.
Interesting. I didn't know you were Army. My sis is Army, too. She's in Korea, about to head to Iraq.

No substitute for experience - early out programs suck. Good luck everyone.
Some random thoughts (from somebody who's been out awhile):
Air Force - Great service, but very crowded and slow moving for enlisted personnel.
Navy - Not bad. A smart, highly motivated person can write their own ticket.
Army - I love these guys, but please...only if I'm drafted.
Marines - If you can do it...God bless you.
Coast Guard - (my personal favorite) Great service. Enlisted promotions are quicker than the AF, but probably slower than the Navy. Very rewarding work. I almost miss it!
