I watched this film last night and was completely blown away by how great it was. It's nominated for Academy Awards for directing, cinematography, editing, and adapted screenplay. It's based on a true story about the drug gangs in the Rio de Janeiro slum cities. Many are calling it one of the greatest gangster movies of all time, with many comparisons to "Goodfellas" and "Scarface" (IMO it was much better than "Goodfellas"). If you are into these kinds of films, you should check it out. Here's a link to some other reviews:

I remember a review of it from early last year. The reviewer wrote (loosely paraphrased) This studio has produced two gangster films of merit this Holliday Season. One of them is truly great, and that is 'City of God'. The other is 'Gangs of New York'.

yeah, I thought Gangs of New York as a little too hokey. Daniel Day Lewis was good, but to me the film had comic book feel to it. In City of God you almost feel like you're watching a documentary with real footage, which is why I think they gave it the nomination for directing, cinematography, and editing.
