Dundee United makes bold move, appoint Brice as new manager

Dundee United chairman Eddie Thompson made a surprising move today, announcing the hiring of Tim Brice to take over the reigns of the Dundee United Football Club, the Dundee Courier reports. Brice replaces former manager Ian McCall, who resigned after a quarrel with Thompson. The appointment is a bit surprising, considering Brice’s inexperience as a manager in the football world.

Brice comes to the club with little previous managing experience. His job prior to taking over was working with United States Soccer Federation in the youth development program. While employed in this stint, Brice helped develop and scout some of America’s top young talent. His credentials also include a USSF ‘A-License’ (the highest attainable license by a coach in the States) as well as an NSCAA Advanced Diploma, which is also considered prestigious.

Brice, 28, is expected to take over the role of manager immediately. The task will be daunting for him, as he prepares to match wits with the top teams in Scotland. Dundee United is currently in the Scottish Premiership, where it finished with a disappointing 8th place finish last season.

Despite Brice’s accolades, the hiring still comes as a surprise to many Dundee United fans. Supporters publicly questioned the hiring of the unknown Brice in a public forum hosted by the club earlier today. Thompson tried to sooth supporters by expressing his full support for Brice and announcing he was fully confident that the club made the right hire.

Brice was not available for comment at press time, despite repeated attempts to reach him. A member of the Dundee United board of directors told the press that Brice was not in Scotland at this time. He said, however, that he was expected to arrive shortly. The member did not know when Brice would address the supporters and press.

The team that Brice inherits played terribly inconsistent last season during the 2001/02 campaign. The club showed flashes of brilliance, particularly in the early part of the season. However, a late slump sent the sluggish Terrors to an eight place finish. The team played a slew of young players, which gave them invaluable experience. Whether or not Brice chooses to use those players is not clear at this time.

The club will feature a nucleolus which is led by Scottish internationals Charlie Miller and Billy Dodds. Dodds will look to restructure his career under Brice, after he scored 2 goals in 11 appearances last season in which he was employed by the Rangers in an injury plagued season.

Rumors floating from the club report that Brice will have $1.4 million to revamp to the team to his liking. Dundee United also is close to $30,000 under its overall wage budget, which means Brice will likely have some creativity when it comes to signing new contracts.

Dodds expressed his concern about the hire, but said that he would throw his full support behind the new club’s manager. Dodds commented further that he was looking forward to playing under Brice despite his lack of experience. Dodds commented that most players felt the same way he did.

Thompson said that Brice would have full control of transfers within the clubs financial means, despite his inexperience. Thompson did not reveal any financial terms of the deal, despite the hounding of the press.

Brice is expected to be in Scotland today. Dundee United has scheduled a closed door practice at the club’s facility. No further details were available.

The introduction to this dynasty is above and now I need to explain what I am going to be doing here. Chief Rum and his recent dynasty of Middlesbrough has convinced me to start a dynast of my own. You are inspiring, CR. :)

It will be used running the original CM4. I do not have the funding right now to upgrade to the latest version. A friendly reminder is that CM4 has no printing functions. Therefore, I will not be able to post a nice, neat print out of my roster or anything similar. That is ok, because it is not the style of this dynasty.

This dynasty will take up a view-point of team management through the media and supporters. I think that this is the best way to go about a dynasty, especially when you do not have any printing capabilities.

It will follow the story line theme which has been perfected by others. I will try to do the same. Scotland will be the focus here, but England will also receive attention. I have a few other leagues as well that I will cover when news arises. Additionally, the World Cup and any type of national team tournaments will be covered as well.

The dynasty will be what I call stat based, meaning readers will only see stats and not any type of ratings. In my opinion, this makes for a far more interesting read. If you have questions concerning player stats, etc. make sure to post them.

Interaction from you, the reader is encouraged. I will do something similar to what CR does . He holds a weekly press conference each week or so of CM time. I will also step out of character to answer any questions pertaining to CM or general soccer knowledge.

The selection of Dundee United was an easy one. I had most fun with CM with Dundee United and I will try to do the same again, only this time with documentation. The team is young but has some talent. Dundee United plays its home games at Tannadice Park, which seats 14,209. The training grounds are rated at adequate.

We will be playing in the Scottish Premiership, which is dominated by Rangers and Celtic, both of Glasgow. Rangers and Celtic are rich beyond their wildest dreams. The rest of the ten teams in the SPL will be chasing them with a much lower budget.

The difference in financial terms almost caused a split back in 2001. Rangers and Celtic wanted to move to the English first division so they could place themselves in a position to enter the financially rewarding EPL. However, the English Football Association did not allow the move.

The goal here is to finish third. In the past, I managed seven or eight years with Dundee United and never finished above 3rd place. While it is the Scottish Premier League, which would seem like a very high starting spot, the difference between the two teams and the rest of the league is phenomenal. Therefore, beating Celtic or Rangers would be a very rewarding experience.

I also would like to note that no super tactics that you can find on the internet will be used. The tactics that I use will be original and created by myself. They are known to be pretty creative, just ask JHandley. Now, if I devise a super tactic, that is a different story. :)

Now that we have all that out of the way, we can start the actual dynasty.

Thompson out does himself again

Special to the Dundee Courier

Dundee United chairman Eddie Thompson has finally outdone some of his crazier antics in the past history of the club. As if a feud between Thompson and former quality manager Ian McCall (which ultimately cost McCall to resign) was not enough, Thompson went out and hired a relative unknown to take over the club.

The hire Thomson made was Tim Brice, who is not known even in the football challenged country of America, much less the world. Brice has no previous managing experience. His claim to fame is that he has worked with America’s top young talent. That is neither impressive or amusing.

What Thompson wants is a puppet that he can push around and control the entire team by himself without having to get permission of the board of directors. Thompson knew exactly what he needed to get. A young manager who has no experience and that no one has ever heard of.

Thompson got exactly what he needed and some how convinced the board that Brice was the best direction to go in for the club. The rumor is that Thompson met Brice when Brice was involved with coaching an American ODP team that played matches in Scotland.

Brice may very well be a nice guy but he has absolute no business managing the Dundee United team. His, at best, questionable coaching experience has been dealing with youth, not professionals. Professionals will of course take the game with a more serious attitude.

Brice must now deal with professionals. The level will be a huge jump that not event the most capable football managers could make. Yet supporters of Dundee United are expected to invest confidence in Brice despite his lack of experience?

In a way, supporters can hope this is some sort of joke. Unfortunately, it is not. Brice was not even named interim manager. He was given full reigns of the club and all that comes with that. Thompson is sure to be patient with him. By the time Thompson gets around to firing Brice, the club may have already be ran into the ground.

Either way this is ideal for Thompson. If Brice some how turns out to be a good manager for the club, Thompson gets to take all the credit. If Brice does poor, he can blame the failure on McCall and say that he left the club in a fragile state.

However, the risk of taking Brice as the manager does not add up and Thompson has not justified it yet. If Thompson wanted to take a project manager under his belt he could have at least taken one from the Scottish lower leagues. Then Dundee United would at least have someone with some experience in the manager’s seat.

Dundee United supporters should not get their hopes for the 2002/2003 campaign. With the new manager installed, the team will have problems all year. Thompson should shrink his ego and rescind the offer to Brice.

Brice makes first transfer move, recalls McConalouge from loan

Newly hired Dundee United manager Tim Brice made his first transfer move, recalling 21 year old Stephen McConalouge from loan. Dundee United had arranged for McConalouge to go on loan to Clyde this season. Clyde is in the First Division of Scotland.

“We regret having to break our agreement with Clyde, but Stephen is going to contend for a starting striker position. I think by bringing him back it will help us with our depth up top,” Brice said in an official club press release.

The remarks were the first that Brice has said since taking over the club. It is still unclear on when he will hold his first press conference.

McConalouge played in twelve games last season, notching one goal in his appearances. In the 2000/01 season, he scored four goals on fourteen appearances. During that season, he also spent some time with Morton on a loan stint where he played in four matches.

Brice also indicated that he would like to send a replacement player to Clyde, but did not give any detail as to who that player might be.

Reports from the Dundee United training facility say that Brice held a closed door meeting yesterday and afterwards, the team trained for about three hours. Emphasis was placed on fitness.

Brice has also apparently placed a no talk order on his players. Members of the media showed up to talk to some of the players after the practice, but none would comment.

Dundee United will play Clyde today in its first friendly of the season.

Dundee United drop first friendly

Dundee United, under the direction of newly hired manager Tim Brice, dropped its first preseason match to First Division squad Clyde, 2-0. Dundee United was dominated up and down the field, being out shot by their opponents nine to one. The match was played at Clyde’s Broadwood Stadium.

The match featured two different squads from Dundee United. In the first half, the projected starters played. The second half saw the expected substitutes heading into the season.

Clyde found the net early in the first half when Steven Convery found the net in the 11th minute. Early saves by starting Dundee United keeper Paul Gallacher kept the team in the match.

The second half was much of the same for Dundee United. Despite a different set of players, the team was still outplayed for the majority of the half. Jack Ross connected on a free kick in the 50th minute for Clyde’s second goal.

Brice spoke with the media for the first time after the game: “I think this match was good because it exploited many of our weaknesses. We can now go to work on solving the problems that this match presented. We played a conservative 4-4-2 because it is a basic formation and allows us to get a look at different things.
Possession was pretty much 50/50, which I think is a start. We just have to find a way to create more chances.”

Brice briefly answered some other questions involving the club before heading to the team bus, citing he had work to do.

The club suffered a bit of bad news when it learned staring midfielder Crag Easton will be out with a pulled groin. The injury is expected to sideline him for two weeks.

Brice made another transaction, recalling midfielder David Winters - who was on loan with Ross County.

“I feel guilty for breaking the loan contract with Ross County, but we need Winters in camp. He can provide valuable depth for us this season on the right wing,” Brice said.

Winters, 20, made thirteen appearances last season for Dundee United.

The team will return to action on July 11th when travels to play Elgin City in another preseason tune-up.

Albion Rovers appoint Parkin as Manager

The Albion Rovers announced today that they have hired Steve Parkin as manager of their squad. It will be the first managing stint of Parkin’s career.
Albion Rovers are currently in the Third Division of Scotland.

Parkin, 36, is a former player for English clubs Sheffield United, Stoke, and W.B.A. He is expected to take over the club immediately. Expectations at the club will be high, with Parkin at the helm.

Terrors interested in McDermott?

Rumors are flying that Dundee United boss Tim Brice is interested in signing young defender Alan McDermott from Scottish Second Division side Hamilton. McDermott, 20, is a former Manchester United youth product.

The reported transfer fee that Brice has offered is in the neighborhood of $20,000. No one was available from Hamilton for comment, nor was McDermott’s agent.

If the deal goes through it will be the first transfer of Brice’s managerial career.

I'm an inspiration (wipes away tear... :) ).

Way to go, GE. Looking forward to reading this.

BTW, it's Middlesbrough (brough, not borough). Before you think I'm being pciky, I thought I would let you know I wrote six or seven articles before I figured that one out myself--and I am pretty sure I wrote Middlesbrouygh more than you have. :D

Chief - I edited in the post. You would think these English names would be easier to spell, considering we speak the same language.

Actually, I think I got the spelling from your dynasty, so there we go. :)

Dundee United run rampant over Elgin City

Dundee United dominated Scottish Third Division side Elgin City, 2-0, in a match played at Borough Briggs in Elgin City. Nearly 5,000 spectators showed up for the match. Dundee United showed flashes of brilliance in the game under new head manager Tim Brice.

“I thought we really played well and clicked on all cylinders in today’s match,” Brice said in his post game press conference. “Our starters showed that they can really play well. I know the opposition is not of the highest level, but I felt like we played well enough today to compete with anyone.”

Dundee United out shot their opponents eight to five. Seven of those shots were on frame. “I think finishing is something we need to work on. However, the (Elgin city keeper) was on today. He made several nice saves,” Brice said.

Billy Dodds got the scoring started in the 27th minute when his strike beat Elgin City keeper Martin Pirie. The goal came after a beautiful through ball from fellow striker Stephen McConalouge.

Five minutes later, defender Danny Griffith scored on an outstanding individual effort, as he took the bal away from an opposing player at midfield and proceeded to use his speed to create a breakaway. He coolly slotted the ball past Pirie for the second goal.

The second half was bit closer as Brice again substituted the full eleven at halftime. “We do that to get everyone fit for the upcoming season. We need depth or we will not give ourselves a full shot to win.”

“The starters are better than the substitutes for the most part, that was shown today. However, everyone has a shot at a starting position. No one has a position locked down going into the season,” Brice said.

“Our midfield was also lacking depth today. With Craig Easton being injured and the fact that we ran the 3-5-2 today meant that we had to go seven deep on our depth chart at that position. Not even the best clubs are blessed with seven top-notch center midfielders.”

It is unclear when Dundee United will return to the pitch The next scheduled game is 26th of July against Inverness Thistle. However, Brice said he is talks with potential English clubs about pre-season matches.

“Two weeks is too long of a break when we are trying to get fit for the season. We need to play and we need to play against quality opponents,” Brice commented.

Luton and Peterborough are both of the English Second Division. Dates for the matches the 17th of July (Peterborough) and the 20th of July (Luton). Tickets are available for both matches.

Leeds United appoint George Graham as Manager

Leeds United, of the English Premier League, have announced that former Scottish International George Graham will take over the reigns of its’ football club. Leeds, which is financial dismay, will rely on Graham to pull the club through tough times.

Graham, 57, was capped twelve times for Scotland in his playing career. He scored three goals during that time span.

Leeds will begin play shortly in the UEFA Cup.

McDermott’s agent tips move to Dundee United

The agent of Alan McDermott confirmed today that his client may soon be making a move to Scottish Premier side Dundee United. McDermott, a central defender for Hamilton, would be excepted to provide depth for the Terrors in the back.

The agent said the transfer fee was $20,000 (US Dollars) straight up. He said no additional clauses were including in the transfer.

“The only thing to do now is to get the contract details deiced,” the agent said. “Dundee United has a pretty good understanding of what we want and I think the process will be quick and painless.”

Neither club was available for comment.

Dundee United looking to thrive in season of change

July 16th, 2002

Dundee United is preparing for the up-coming season under a newly hired manager in Tim Brice. The manager turmoil at the beginning of the season is sure to have an affect on team spirit but many hardcore Terrors fans are hoping that change will be a good thing for the young club.

The club is preparing for the upcoming campaign in the Scottish Premier League. Many fans are excited about the season, citing that the club has depth and players who can turn around the game.

Youth is on the side of Dundee United this season. The average age for the eleven expected starters is 22.8 years of age, which is far below the league average.

The preseason goalkeeping battle has not been what it was expected to be. Paul Gallacher has established himself as the clear number 1. The 22 year old Gallacher, who has picked up three Scottish caps, was expected to receive a challenge from Alan Combe. “I think we have two very capable keepers both of which could start in the SPL,” manager Tim Brice said. “However, Paul is our number 1 right now. He has clearly shown that he is deserving of the position heading into the season.”

The defense for Dundee United is also excepted to have clear starters heading into the season. Brice said that the majority of matches will be played with three center backs. Northern Ireland international Danny Griffith, 24, is anticipated to get the role of being the rock of the defense. Griffith has played very well in preseason matches.

The other two defending spots are not as clear as Griffith. Two favorites have emerged in Italian Daniele Chiarini (23 years old) and young Matt Wilson (18 years old). Chinarini is a new addition to the squad this season, coming from tiny Italian club Faenza. Brice sung the praises of Wilson, saying that the Dundee United youth product had a long and prosperous feature ahead of him in the football world.

However, with the recent addition of Alan McDermott the positions may not be as clear as once thought. Veteran Jim Lachlan (25 years old), who has been a regular starter for the club the past two seasons, is also expected challenge for a starting spot.

Expected to provide depth and versatility to the back line are Ryan Waddell (19 years old), Jamie McCunnie (19 years old), and Gary Bollan (29 years old). “Jamie and Gary are important to our team because they can play the outside back positions. We will need these two when we employ a flat back four defensive scheme,” manager Tim Brice said.

The midfield has less question marks surrounding it. Wingers Jim Patterson (22 years old) and Stephen O’Donnell (19 years old) are the clear favorites to earn starting positions. Patterson started the majority of the matches last season for the club on the left wing and O’Donnell saw valuable playing time as a reserve. “Both wingers give us what we want, the ability to get up and down the field and hit top drawer crosses,” Brice again commented.

David Winters (20 years old), who was recently recalled from Ross County after a brief loan stint, will provide depth at the right wing spot. Eighteen year old Danny Ogunmade has been seeing time in preseason friendlies at the left wing spot.

The central midfield will be led by Craig Easton, the 23 year old Dundee United youth product. Easton has been a regular starter for the club the past five seasons and this year is expected to be no different. Scotland international Charlie Miller (26 years old) will play an attacking mid role for the club. “Craig and Charlie are the heart of the team from the midfield spot. Both can hold and create. They should do well for us this season,” Brice said.

The other midfield starting spot is up for grabs, however. Stuart Duff (20 years old) is expected to be the leading candidate to land the job. However, he will receive a stiff challenge from veteran Russell Latapy. Latapy is a new addition to the squad, after being signed away from Rangers in the off season.

Jim McIntyre (30 years old), who has been with Dundee United for a season, is should provide depth in the midfield for the club. Eighteen year old Graeme Holmes and 21 year old Hugh Davidson will provide additional cover. Defender Matt Wilson may also see some time in the midfield if needed.

The strikers this season have also been made clear by Brice in his early season friendlies. Veteran Billy Dodds (33 years old), who made a move to the club from Rangers, and youth product Stephen McConalouge (21 years old) will start up top for the club. “Billy and Stephen play very well together and I am confident that any chances we create, these two will have do a great job of finishing them off for us.”

Dundee United will count on veteran Derek Lilley (28 years old) to provide cover up top for the Terrors. Allan Smart (28 years old) and Danny Ogunmade may see some minutes as well if injuries deplete the position.

“The squad is young and will make mistakes,” Brice said. “The real question here is if we can overcome these mistakes.”

The only true veteran on the squad is Billy Dodds. Most of the back-ups for the Dundee United squad are young, as well.

Can the club cash in on its young and make a serious run at the title? It will be up to team leadership and to the veterans of the club to make the decision. Unfortunately, the theme around the club seems to be inexperience, as this is Brice’s first season managing the club.

Dundee United pounds unsuspecting Peterborough

July 17th, 2002

Dundee United continued to spark interest across Scotland as it easily handled Peterborough, 3-1, in a preseason tune-up. Peterborough, considered the Terrors’ best opponent to date, was outplayed up and down the field for the majority of the match by the Dundee United squad.

After Peterborough struck first in the 16th minute, the Terrors responded with three unanswered goals. Leon McKenzie was the scorer for Peterborough, after Ryan Waddell lost possession of the ball in the back.

Dundee United answered 10 minutes later when Jim Patterson connected on a beauty from forty yards out. A down field ball was played to Patterson. Peterborough keeper Mark Tyler made the mistake of coming out for the ball and Patterson beat him over the top with a chip shot.

In the 35th minute, Tyler scored an own goal. The own goal was created by the pressure of Sean O’Donnell, who stroked a free kick from about 20 yards out. Tyler bobbled the ball and it fell into the back of the net.

In the 45th minute Stephen McConalouge cleaned up in front of the net on a rebound to put Dundee United up by two. The shot was originally created by Craig Easton who received an excellent pass from Stuart Duff.

In the second half the match was closer as Dundee United sent in its reserves while Peterborough kept most of its starters in the match.

In the 64th minute, Peterborough though they had scored on a freak corner kick play. However, the goal was ruled out by the head referee after it was determined that a Peterborough player had gained an advantage by pushing off.

Newly acquired Alan McDermott played sixty minutes in a center back position. McDermott came on after Daniele Chiarani picked up a knock. The injury Chiarna is not serious.

Dundee United manager Tim Brice felt like McDermott played well in his first match for the club. “He did some things well from the center back position. He sealed down any leaks in the defense and got forward and created chances. I was very pleased.”

Dundee United out shot Peterborough nine to four.

Dundee United will return to action on the 20th of July, when they face English Second Division squad Luton.

Dundee United draws with Luton

July 20th, 2002

Dundee United drew with Second Division side Luton from England in a match played today at Tannadice Park. Dundee United dominated possession for the majority of the match but failed to capitalize on its chances. The final score of the match was 1-1.

Dundee United also out shot their opponents eight to five.

Luton started the scoring in the 30th minute when Steve Howard climbed above the Dundee United defenders and hammered home a corner kick with his head.

“He (Howard) just came in and out jumped our players. We really did not get an advanced scouting report for this game. If we did, we would have known about his leaping abilities,” Dundee United boss Tim Brice said.

The Terrors struck back 4 minutes later when Billy Dodds finished off a strike. The goal came off an assist from midfielder Stuart Duff, who carried the ball into the 18 yard box and dished it off to Dodds.

“Billy did a good job of putting that one away. He finished the chance which is what I have been preaching in training. Chances are precious in soccer, ad we must finish everyone we get,” Brice said.

The second half saw Dundee United substitute its full side, as it has done in past friendlies. Dundee United had several chances to go ahead, but never could close the deal.

“What these reserves need to realize is that this is their chance to shine,” Brice said. “Once the season starts, the playing time will not be coming for them on the first team. This is their opportunity to make an impression me.”

“Some have, some have not,” Brice continued. “I was disappointed with several of our back-ups in today’s match. Others though, played extremely well.”

Brice would not go into details about which players fell in to which category.

“I think the team has a chance to be real good. Our first team dominated the squad from Luton. We really controlled the first half. We just have to find the chances with the first unit,” Brice added.

“The second team squad worked hard and put themselves in a chance to score. I was disappointed the strikers did not finish. That is something that will have to be worked on. I can not emphasis that enough.”

Dundee United will play its final preseason match in six days against Inverness C. Thistle.

Dundee United inks three players to new deals

Moments before a friendly match, Dundee United boss Tim Brice announced that the club had locked up three players to long term contracts.

Danny Griffith, Charlie Miller, and Stephen McConalouge have all signed contracts that will longing their stint at the club. Manager Tim Brice commented on the signings before the match: “I am ecstatic. These three players will be apart of the club for a very long time. All three are quality athletes and will be play a major role both now and in the future.”

Griffin, 24, is Northern Ireland international player who has gathered 24 caps. He has been a regular starter for the club since being acquired two years ago from St. Jonhstone. His deal will keep him at the club until June of 2005. His basic wage will be $4,500 a week and he was also given a $16,000 signing bonus.

Miller, 26, has played for the Scotland national team one time in his young career. He has also been a two year starter since joining the club from Wattford.
He was a Rangers youth product. His new contract will also keep at the club until 2005. He will receive a basic wage of $4,500 and garnered a $16,000 signing bonus as well.

McConalouge, 21, signed a deal to keep him with the club until June of 2006. He is a product of the Dundee United youth system and has made 49 appearances for the club and recorded five tallies during that span. His contract will pay him $1,400 per week and will include a 10% pay increase each season. He was also given a $1,000 signing bonus.

Dundee United drops last warm-up match

Dundee United dropped a 1-0 decision on the road to Inverness Thistle today at The Grove in Halesowen. It was the final preseason tune-up before the regular season begins in roughly a week’s time.

Inverness got the scoring started early in the 2nd minute when Jason Dobson connected on a free kick. The shot was seemingly right at United keeper Paul Gallacher, but he somehow muffed the shot.

“Paul just lost that one,” Dundee United manager Tim Brice said and his press conference after the game. “There is really no excuses for him, he just missed it. Hopefully he will get all those kinks worked out before the start of the regular season.”

Dundee United made a change from previous matches. The team played its starters for the entire length of the match, with the exception of two defenders who were substituted out at halftime.

“I felt Inverness would be a good test for our starters. They are a Scottish First Division team that has been tipped for promotion. I thought we played well in the midfield and held possession for most of the match. We just need to find the way to create chances.”

Inverness out shot Dundee United eight to one.

Brice said the job of his staff and himself is now to find the adjustments needed to create chances. He said that organizational changes need to take place on the pitch.

“In the SPL, you can compete with good tactics. We have to find a way to create the chances. I am confident that our strikers will finish any chance given to them. Tactical changes will be made, however I do not want to tip the hand to future opponents.”

Brice said that before the first match, the exact first team would be hammered out. He did not make it clear which players would make the squad and which would not.

“My staff and I are just going to dig out the video tapes from the preseason matches and go from there. I have a pretty good idea of where I stand with the team. It will just be decisions of who dresses out and who will be sent to the reserve team.”

Dundee United pull upset on the road, knock off Dunfermline

Dundee United manager Tim Brice was all smiles after his first professional debut as the head boss of the club. Who can blame him? After all, his young Dundee United squad had just got done knocking off Dufermline at East End Park. You see, Dunfermline is considered by the experts to finish 3rd or 4 this season in the SPL. Dundee United could be dreaming if they wish to finish that high, according to the so called experts.

However, Brice took his squad and proved the bookmakers wrong in the first match of the season, topping Dunfermline in a 2-1 thriller to kick off the 2002/3 season. Supporters desperately needed Brice to show them he was capable of managing at this level. He gladly took the challenge and so far, is proving doubters wrong.

“I will take the three points on the road anytime. We came out here and played our hearts out. The team was motivated and it showed on the pitch. I am proud of them,” Brice said after the game.

Paul Gallacher set the tempo for the entire match when he pushed away
a crashing Stevie Crawford shot in the 13th minute. Gallacher ended the match with six saves.

Dunfermline seemed the control the tempo of the first half, taking several chances and almost converting them. Gallacher stayed big in the net, and the defensive effort picked up the pace to keep the opponents off the board.

Dundee United had a chance to take the lead in the 30th minute, after Stephen McConalouge chased down a through ball. McConalouge hit a perfect cross to Billy Dodds, but Dodds was unable to finish. The ball was sent to the right side of the net but Dunfermline goaltender Derek Stillie managed a save.

The teams went into the break tied at 0.

The second half resumed with Dundee United looking much more organized tactically. McConalouge had a chance in the 55th minute after a nice cross from Jim Patterson, but his header found Stillie.

Dunfermline also challenged in the early part of the half, but the defensive line of Dundee United closed space quickly and did not allow any quality chances for the home team.

Stuart Duff played a through ball to Dodds in the 57th minute of the match. Dodds controlled the ball and hit a well time cross to an open McConalouge. Mconalouge brought down the cross and then hit a streamer past Stillie for his first goal of the season.

Dunfermline would counter, however, in three minutes when Stevie Crawford scored. Crawford took a flicked header from teammate Craig Brewster and finished the shot past Gallacher to not things at one. Dundee United defender Jim Lauchlan got turned around on the play and lost his mark.

Things got dramatic in the 83rd minute when Dodds took a defensive clear from Russell Latapy . Dodds controlled the ball and noticed that Stillie had rushed out of his net to try to win the ball. Dodds hit an ambitious chip shot from 30 yards out with little space. The shot somehow found the net. The finish sent the Dundee United bench into a frenzy.

In the 88th minute, Dunfermline player Brewster had a chance for an equalizer but he sent his header inches wide of the net. It would be the last chance Dunfermline would get.

McConalouge had a chance to add another goal in the 90th minute of play, but his shot was well saved by Stillie. The shot came after Stephen O’Donnell got free and hit a cross to the middle of the field where McConalouge was waiting.

“The game winner may have been a fluke but I will take it in this situation. Billy is a great skill player and if he anyone could hit that shot on this team it would be him. He is our team captain and he showed great leadership and poise on the pitch today,” Brice said in his post game press conference.

Dodds spoke about the shot afterwards as well. “I just saw the keeper coming out so I figured my best shot would be to chip him. I had defenders on my tail so I knew dribbling him would not be an option. I just hit the shot and it went it.”

The victory did come with a cost though, as substitute defender Jim Lauchlan fractured a rib and will be out for two weeks.

Dundee United will return to action in a week when they host Hibs. They are expected to be the favorites in the match.

In other U21 action, reserve team winger Stephen Carson went 74 minutes in the U21 Northern Ireland - Ireland match. Carson played for Northern Ireland. Ireland easily won the game 3-0. Defender Graham Garland did not dress for Ireland squad.

Sluggish Scots open Euro qualifying with a win

Scotland struggled with hosts Faeroe Islands in the first match of European Championship Qualifying in Group 5. However, Scott Both and Berry Ferguson managed to find the nets for Scotland, prevailing them to a 2-0 win.

The match was played evenly throughout the game. In the end, however, finishing made the difference for Scotland. Scotland has five chances on goal, converting two of them. Faeroe Islands had two chances, both which keeper Neil Sullivan stoned.

Dundee United keeper Paul Gallacher did not dress for the match.

In the other Group 5 match, Germany defeated Lithuania 2-0.

Holmes suffers injury

Reserve team midfielder Gramme Holmes tore a groin muscle and is excepted to be out for two months. Holmes, 18, played well during preseason matches. He was anticipating to start for the reserve side.

“The injury to Gramme is unfortunate,” Dundee United manager Tim Brice said. “It takes away from our depth in the mid. However, I am confident he will make a speedy and full recovery.”

Dundee United draw at home with Hibs

Dundee United hosted Hibernian in a Scottish Premiership match today, but walked away with a disappointing 0-0 draw. Dundee United, which defeated Dunfermline in its first match of the season, dominated possession for the majority of the match but was unable to create any quality chances.

In the third minute, Dundee United striker Stephen McConalouge had a chance to put the home side up one but he was unable to get a shot off after a great last minute tackle from Hibs defender Gary Smith.

In the 31st minute, Hibs striker and Scottish international Gary O’Connor had a chance to put the visiting side up a goal, but Dundee United keeper Paul Gallacher was gold on the initial shot, and then recovered the rebound to remove the danger.

Dundee United had another chance in the 37th minute when Billy Dodds knocked a free kick into the box. Craig Easton managed to win the header in the air but the ensuing shot hit the side-netting.

Jim Patterson had a chance in the 42nd minute to give Dundee United the lead, but his one versus one with the keeper shot was sent harmlessly over the cross bar.

In the 48th minute of the match, Hibs striker Tom McManus hit a rocket of a shot at Gallacher. However, Gallacher was up to the task and he knocked the ball safely over the crossbar.

In the 56th minute of play, Dundee United attacking midfielder Charlie Miller was played a nice ball from Stuart Duff. Miller proceeded to try an ambitious shot from well out but it sailed over the bar.

In the 63rd minute of action, O’Connor of Hibs had another chance for a strike when he rose above Dundee United defender Danny Griffith off a corner kick. However, Gallacher remained steady and gathered the ball.

Dundee United thought they had scored a goal in the games’ 86th minute when winger Patterson took a pass and slotted it past keeper Nick Colgan for the goal. However, referee Hugh Dallas ruled Patterson to be offside. Replays show the correct call was made.

“I am disappointed we could not find the chances or that we can not put one in or create more chances,” manager Tim Brice said in the press conference afterwards. “I am not a big fan of defensive soccer but it was what was played on the pitch today.”

“We really did a good job of controlling possession and we should have created more chances. I think we did a great job sealing leaks on the defensive side. We really frustrated Hibs.”

“I was concerned heading into the match about Hibs tactics,” Brice continued. “They play a tactic were they push there wingers way forward. To counter this, I told my wingers to play more defensively and not push up as much. Once I saw that it was a not concern I told my wingers to take more chances. Things picked up then.”

“Hibs is an attacking team. We only play three defenders in the back so the fact that they get usually at least four attackers involved worried me. I thought we made the necessary adjustments but it cost us some early offense.”

“I will take the point. I thought we could have came away with three but we did not. We are really tuning into being a defensive squad and I have no problem with that as long we continue to get points,” Brice concluded.

Most services named Dundee United midfielder Craig Easton man of the match. It was his first Man of the Match award this season.

Supporters seemed to be mixed on the feelings of the squad so far. Many believe that the team will have to become more offense if it wants a chance to contend in SPL. Others seem to be happy just garnering points.

Dundee United will return to the pitch in a weeks’ time when they will host Aberdeen. Aberdeen sits in second place currently with wins over Hibs (3-1) and Dundee (3-1). Odds makers have made Dundee United a 6-4 favorite.

Dundee United U18s thump Rangers

The Dundee United U18 squad won a decisive decision today when they beat Rangers U18 4-0 at Tannadice Park. The match saw Dundee United finish for out of seven chances presented to the squad.

“I thought the younglings played very well,” head manager Tim Brice said. Brice enjoyed the game from the comfort of the press box, while assistant manager Gordon Chisholm saw over the team.

“What you have here is a team that just whipped Rangers, the best organization in the Scottish Premier League. When you combine these kids with the already young players we have on our first team, it creates a very deep talent pool for the future. That obviously excites me.”

Midfielder John McMenemy got the scoring started in the 16th minute of play when he launched a header into the net off a Dundee United corner kick.

In the 50th minute, Stephen McGowan scored a goal off a rebound that beat the Rangers keeper John Adam. Steve Craig hit a great shot that Adam somehow managed to get to, but McGowan put away the rebound for the score.

Striker Aaron Conway, a second half substitute, took over the game after that. Conway connected in the 53rd minute on a volley that beat keeper Adam to his right. Craig fed the pass to Conway.

Conway struck gold again in the 75th minute when he received another pass from Craig. Conway got his head to the ball and put it past the diving Adam.

Steven Bell was praised after the match for his performance in the game for Dundee United. However, Dundee United substitute striker Michael Lau was named man of the match.

Brice angry as Dundee United draw with Aberdeen

Dundee United had a thrilling draw 1-1 with Aberdeen in a game that stirred up emotions of both players and coaches. Dundee United boss Tim Brice said he was disgusted with the officiating following Aberdeen’s dramatic equalizer in the waning minutes of the match at Tannadice Park in the Scottish Premier League.

“The goal was clearly offside,” Brice said of the equalizer. “I am extremely frustrated with the no call. The flag should have came up. I do not see how the referee and the assistant referee both missed the call. I am upset because it cost us two points, no doubt about it.”

The call in question is when Aberdeen striker Darren Mackie took a pass from midfielder Jamie McAllister and proceeded to slot the ball past Dundee United keeper Paul Gallacher. Replays show that Mackie was in an offside position when the pass was released. Mackie was left all alone in front of the net when Dundee United defender Gary Bollan stepped forward.

The call sent Brice and other Dundee United personal into a tirade. Brice verbally abused both head referee Craig Thomson and his assistant about the call for the remaining two minutes of play. Another Dundee United personal member who was not identified made threatening gestures toward Thomson.

Dundee United supporters also expressed their disappointment with the call. When Thomson and his crew left the pitch, fans of the club rained down debris intended for the officials to show their disapproval of the call. Police dressed in riot gear were called into the stadium to assure all fans exited without instance.

The match itself featured a back and forth grudge mach between the two teams. In the 11th minute of action, Dundee United almost went up a goal but Stephen O’Donnell’s attempt off a free kick sailed inches wide of the goal.

In the 13th minute of play, Aberdeen’s Mackie had a chance to take the lead for his team when he headed a cross toward the goal. However, Gallacher easily made the save.

In the 19th minute, Dundee United again had a chance to go one up but had a shot from Charlie Miller go only inches wide again. The shot also came off a free kick after an Aberdeen foul.

After a mistake by Dundee United defender Daniele Chiarini in the 27th minute, Aberdeen were unlucky not to score. Chiarini lost the ball in the back where Mackie recovered and came up alone with Gallacher. Fortunately, for Dundee United the keeper confidently saved the ball.

In the 56th minute, Mackie again had a chance only to be stoned by Gallacher. Mackie struck a volley from well out after Aberdeen had an intercepted a pass in the midfield.

The 57th minute also put fans on the edge of their seats when Aberdeen striker Derek Young won a header off a cross. But the header went right to Gallacher who handled the shot cleanly. Gallacher again made saves in the 68th and 71st minutes.

Dundee United’s goal came in the 82nd minute when the team won a corner kick. Stephen O’Donnell hit an in-swinging corner. Stephen McConalouge then out jumped an Aberdeen defender to win the ball and head it into the back of the net. It was McConalouge’s second goal of the season.

Aberdeen then moved everyone up to try to get a tying goal. They found a new breath of life when there gasping attempt went into the back of the net, albeit controversial.

“I am just so disappointed. It is not even the offside call. It is the fact that were fouled repeatedly every time we got near the goal,” Brice said. “They had 20 fouls and yet only three yellow cards. Just about all of our free kicks came from outside the box. There strategy was clear and that was to foul to break up any type of offensive chance we had. They were guilty of infringement on several different occasions.”

“I will admit to making a tactical area late in the game. I felt with Aberdeen pushing everyone up I should have switched to zonal marking instead of sticking with man. It does not cost us the game but it would have benefited to switch to the zone,” Brice explained.

Referee Thomson stuck to his guns afterwards when approached about the call. “I saw the ball released a moment before the player moved into the offside position. My assistant and I stand firm on our call and we regret any harsh feelings from coaches, players, and fans. My crew and I were just doing our job.”

The tie moves Dundee United into sixth place with five total points. Aberdeen now stands in third with seven points.

Dundee United will return to the pitch in a weeks time when they travel to Glasgow to face first place Celtic. Celtic are currently 6 to 4 favorites.

However, it is clear that Lunt will soon be making a move. Among the clubs battling for his signature are English sides Preston North End and Wolverhampton, as well as Scottish side Dundee United. All three clubs have reportedly offered $160,000 in transfer fees.

“Kenny is still a part of the Crewe squad and will continue to be until a transfer is made official,” said Lunt’s agent. “He would like to stay at Crewe but realizes that transferring is apart of the game. We will see what happens.”

Dundee United Reserves lose 1-0

The Dundee United reserve team dropped a match to the Rangers reserve team today, 1-0. The match was played at Tannadice Park. Dundee United outshot their opponents ten to six and held a slight advantage in possession.

Former Argentinean international Claudio Caniggia scored a goal in the 39th minute for the only goal of the match. Ryan Waddell for Dundee United missed a penalty in the 49th minute that could have tied the game.

The Rangers squad featured five players with international caps including Bert Konterman, who has been a main stay with the Holland national team. It also included a few Scottish U20 players.

“The thing about the reserve matches is it gets minutes to players who we don’t need with the first team right now,” Dundee United manager Tim Brice said. “It allows to get match fit so they will be ready when we need them. It also gives a chance for your younger players to play against veterans such as Caniggia and Konterman. You learn from players like that.”

The next reserve match will be in a week against Hibs.

Dundee United out-classed by Celtic, 4-0

Dundee United was out played badly by Celtic as they dropped a 4-0 decision at Celtic Park in Glasgow. The match was highlighted by a three goal performance by Hendrik Larsson, who was perhaps playing his final match in Celtic green.

Celtic barraged Dundee United with 26 shots and 13 of those being on target. Dundee United, on the other hand, did not record a shot during the match.

“I think it is pretty clear what happened out there today,” Dundee United manager Tim Brice said in his post game comments. “We were totally outplayed. We did not keep our heads. We did not do anything right. I warned my team about what may happen if we did this and came true.”

“We can sit here and debate what happened all day long. The fact of the matter is we did not have it on the pitch. If you want to beat Celtic on the road you have to play on raw emotion. We did not have that. We just let them take control of the game.”

Dundee United started out playing a 5-4-1, obviously getting men behind the ball and look for any chance at a counter attack.

“I would have loved to come out of here with a point. Any manager in the SPL would be flattered to come out of a Celtic Park with a point. We dug in and hoped for the best. It did not work out for us.

Larsson, who has been the rumor of many transfer talks, started the scoring in the 35th minute when he buried a rebound that bounced around in front of the Dundee United net. Neil Lennon hit the initial shot with Gallacher turned away brilliantly. Larsson was left unmarked and cleaned up the rebound.

In the 37th minute, Celtic struck again when Stillian Petrov swung in a cross and John Hartson rose over Craig Easton to win the ball and knock it into the back of the goal for the 2-0 lead.

Brice then decided to abandon his defense stance and resort back to his 3-5-2 that he has played in every match so far this season. The switch yielded no offensive results.

In the 60th minute, Dundee United defender Danny Griffith lost his cool and kicked Celtic player Hartson. The referee showed Griffith the red card and he was sent to the showers. Griffith will now have to miss the next three matches. He will miss two of the matches dude to accumulating 32 disciplinary points. He will miss another match for the red card.

“Danny just lost it,” Brice said. “He will be fined one week’s wages for his antics. We now have to play our next three matches without are key defensive player. It just was not worth it for him.”

Celtic wasted no time putting the dagger in the heart of Dundee United after the send off. In the 72nd minute, Larsson found the goal for a second time when he left Charlie Miller for dead and then put the ball past the diving Gallacher.

Six minutes later, Larsson hit screaming 30 yard volley that made it past Gallacher for the hat trick. The Celtic fans, arose and gave Larsson a standing ovation that lasted for a good four or five minutes.

After the game, Larsson was very emotional and stayed out on to the pitch for a good time. He shook each one of the Celtic players hands and exchange hugs with many of them. The fans stayed and seemed much appreciative of his six years of service to the club.

Larsson insisted that he was staying with the club in the post game press conference.

Dundee United boarded the team bus quickly and left the park.

Brice was very compliment of Celtic after the game. “They will win the SPL. There is no one better. There is not a weak spot on the pitch for them. Believe me, we tried to find it.”

Brice also offered some advice to Celtic manager Martin O’Neal. “I would advise him not to sell Larsson. He is great for Celtic and great for the game in Scotland. He is an ambassador. I would hate to see a player of his class go.”

Brice summed his first trip to Celtic Park: “We have many things that went wrong in this match but we are not going to dwell on them. We will watch film for a day over the game and then move on. We have to set our sights elsewhere.”

“This also proved that we have a long way to go before we can be the class of the SPL. That is what I want this organization to be. We have to find the way to make it happen.”

The loss moved Dundee United to eight place overall in the current table. Celtic remains in first with ten points.

Dundee United will host third place Livingston in the next game. Dundee United are 5-4 favorites.

Dundee United reserves to lose to Hibs

On the same day the senior squad was embarrassed at Celtic, the reserve team also lost a match. Although the opponent and venue was different, the loss looked similar. Hibs won the match, 2-0, at Tannadice Park.

Hibs registered 11 shots on goal, six of which were on target. Dundee United had three shots but none of those found the frame.

Hibs found the net early when midfielder Ross Jeffery scored in the second minute of the game. Dundee United keeper Paul Jarvie was beat after Jeffery became free on a breakaway.

Stephen Craig was sent off in the 37th minute after he lashed out at Hibs player and shoved Brian Wilson to the ground. He was promptly shown the red card.

Wilson would add another goal for Hibs in the 54th minute. Wilson’s shot came about 25 yards out from the goal.

The reserve team will return to action in roughly eight days time when they face Celtic.

Dundee United U18s victorious again

The Dundee United U18 squad sits atop of their table after defeating Hibs 3-2 in a match played at Easter Road Stadium in Edinburgh. The result gives Dundee United six points, which is good enough for first place.

Dundee United looked like they may lose the match, but thanks to a furious come back they managed to get the win.

Hibs started the scoring in the 50th minute when James Kelly found himself in front of the net after a Dundee United defender lost mark.

Kelly found the net again in the 63rd minute. Kelly, who was being marked by Andy Hunter, again eluded his marker. He came free and coolly put the ball past
Bruce.

Dundee United struck right back in the 66th minute when Aaron Conway hit a cross in front of the goal. Joseph Andrew was at the right spot at the right time as he headed the ball into the back of the net.

Stephen McGowan leveled the match in the 82nd minute when Conway played off a beautiful ball after he turned in some tight spaces right into the feet of McGowan who easily put the ball away.

Conway got in on the scoring himself in the 90th minute as he scored the game winner. He received a great pass from Andrew and found the net wide open after the keeper rushed out and tapped in the ball for the game winner.

The reserves will face a stern challenge when they travel to Celtic Park to face Celtic on September 8th.

Larsson sold

Transfer speculation over Hendrik Larsson finally ended, with the striker being sold to Spanish side Valencia for $16 million dollars.

Larsson had been rumored to be leaving Celtic soon and the Spanish club beat out some of the top clubs in the world for his signature.

Those clubs include Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Juventus, Roma, and Milan all made an enquiring.

Larsson’s contract at Valencia is believed to be for 2 years and will pay him close to $7 million dollars. It also includes heavy incentives for scoring goals or picking up assists.

There is already report of unrest at Celtic, with former teammate Chris Sutton going public with his disappointment over Larsson be sold. He is not the only one, as team morale seemed overall low for the Scottish Premier League holders.

Larsson ended his stint at Celtic with a bang, scoring three goals against Dundee United in his final match. He had scored six goals in five appearances this season for Celtic.

DK - I am split about Larsson leaving Celtic. Obviously he is a great player and is a very scary scoring threat to which I have no answer on how to shut him down. At the same time he is a great player and is fun to watch even in CM.

So I guess I am impartial on it. I am a bit surprised he went to Spain and not the EPL, especially with the powers courting him.

At least he had a grand farewell, lighting up my arse for three goals.

Thanks for your compliments and hopefully I can turn Dundee United in to the best team in Scotland.

Larsson...actually looked at him for my Boro dynasty. Way too much money for little ole Middlesbrough. That fee paid by Valencia was triple my whole transfer budget! :(

To borrow a term from Sir Foz, KUPTGW, GE. ;)

DK, Klayman - good find on the Larsson material. I can not remember a time when I ran a CM4 game where Larsson was not sold. I guess he is one of those players that the AI targets to sell.

Chief - I have no idea what that means but, uh, thanks anyway. :)

As Transfer Deadline nears, teams make shake ups

The Scottish deadline for transfers is rapidly approaching and that has sent many teams into a fury looking to sign new players to improve their club status heading into the stretch run.

Celtic was the biggest player in the market, after they sold off star striker Hendrik Larsson which increased their transfer budget. They shored up their defense by adding veteran defender Barry Smith for $1.2 million from Dundee (mind you - NOT Dundee United). They also added Nottingham Forrest defender Riccy Scimeca for a fee of $1.1 million.

Smith, 28, will be returning back to Celtic after he was an original youth product for that club. He has spent the last eight seasons with Dundee and was a regular starter.

Scimeca, 27, has been a regular on the Nottingham Forrest back line for the past three seasons. He was brought to the club from Aston Villa. He commented to the media that his reasoning for the move was to gain exposure to the England national team coaches.

Many other moves were made by smaller clubs, but no other big clubs seemed pressured by the deadline.

Dundee United manager Tim Brice commented to the local media that he was very content with his squad and felt no need to make any moves. Brice admitted that he did make a few enquiries about player who could bolster the offense, but said the asking price was too high for those players.

Other transfer notes

Chelsea have paid a fee of $14.25 million to West Ham to acquire the rights of Joe Cole. Cole, 20, has already been a regular for the English national side and is considered one of the up and coming starts of the game. Chelsea also paid $8.25 million for versatile defender/midfielder Danny Mills from Leeds. They also picked up midfielder Simao from Portugal side Benfica for a cool $15 million. Chelsea has spent $58 million dollars this season in an attempt to improve the club squad.

Ajax have signed Hajduk goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa for a fee of $5.25 million…
Turkish Bestikas have invested $13.25 million in Yilmaz Okan, after they picked up his rights from Bursaspor.

Scottish Premier League hands out monthly awards

The Scottish Football Association released its monthly awards for the month of August today. There are three awards: player of the month, young player of the month, and manager of the month. The awards are given out at the beginning of each month.

Livingston’s David Bingham was awarded the player of the month award. The forward scored six goals in six appearances for the club. The award is the first for Bingham - who at 31 is already a veteran of the game.

The young player of the month award went to Aberdeen’s Darren Mackie. Mackie, 20, appeared in six matches and managed five tallies - including one to earn a valuable a point on the road at Dundee United in the dying seconds of the match. The award is the first of any type for Mackie.

The manager of the month award went to Aberdeen’s Steve Patterson. Patterson has Aberdeen over achieving, as they sit in 2nd place with 10 points. Current leaders Celtic also have 10 points but hold a plus seven goal differential.

Brice frustrated as Dundee United drops another match, 3-1

Dundee United Tim Brice lashed out at his team in the post game press conference following the club’s 3-1 loss to Livingston at home. The loss was the second straight for Dundee United.

“I just do not get them. They don’t play up to their talent level. Today we did very little things right. We did not seal leaks on defense. We didn’t hit good passes. We made the wrong decisions. It is just one big disappointment and is frustrating for my staff and I,” Brice said.

Livingston out played Dundee United for the majority of the match. They picked up twelve shots compared to the Terrors five. They also won the overall possession.

“They could have vacationed in their attacking third today,” Brice continued. “Our defense was not aggressive and just sat back and let Livingston bring the game to them. They can not do that.”

The defense was missing starter Danny Griffith, who is serving a three match ban due to on field disciplinary problems.

Ronaldo Zarte started the scoring for Livingston in the 6th minute when he received a timely cross from Gullimerro Amor. Zarte then beat Dundee United keeper Paul Gallacher with a dribbling move. Brice said afterward Gallacher played it wrong but should have never been in that situation if his teammates would have not lost mark.

Livingston added another goal just three minutes later after a controversial penalty kick decision by referee Alan Freeland. Gustave Bohoken buried the penalty for the visitors.

The call was made after Daniele Chiarini pushed Livingston player Quinio in the box. Brice said after the game that he had seen much worse not called for a penalty. “I though it was just a little nudge in the back,” Brice explained. “Ninety nine of hundred times that call is not made.”

In the 25th minute, Dundee United had their first chance when Stephen McConalouge dished off the ball to fellow striker Billy Dodds. Dodds shot was on target but the ball was held by Livingston keeper Alan Maine.

The 31st minute brought a crashing shot from Livingston’s David Bingham but the shot was pushed away brilliantly by Gallacher to keep Dundee in the match.

The 39th minute brought a chance for Dundee United. The strike force pair of Dodds and McConalouge almost hooked up for a goal when Dodds hit a cross to McConalouge. McConalouge got his head to the ball but Main kept it out of the net.

In the 51st minute Dundee United did manage to claw back within one. Midfielder Charlie Miller started with a brilliant run and then played the ball out to winger Jim Patterson. Patterson crossed the ball to Dodds who trapped and finished.

Dundee United thought they had evened the match in the 74th minute, when Miller ripped a shot from twenty yards out for a goal. However, McConalouge was ruled to be shielding the keeper from the ball in an offside position.

Livingston put the game away in the 86th minute when Amor rose above defender Mark Wilson and headed the ball in for a 3-1 lead off of a corner kick. Wilson just could not equal the leaping abilities of Amor.

Dundee United captain Billy Dodds addressed the media after the game: “We just played flat. We tried to get some offense going but it did not work out. I think we just need to find a way to generate more chances - whether we make changes tactically is not my decision.”

“Usually our defense is pretty solid but they were missing a starter and just did not do as well as they usually do. That is when the offense has to step up and just take over the game. We did not do that,” Dodds concluded.

The loss keeps Dundee United at five points which is 10th place in the table. Livingston, in the mean time, now has nine points which is good enough for third place.

Dundee United will travel on the road to face 9th placed Patrick Thistle in its nest match. Patrick Thistle is located in Glasgow. Dundee United are a 6-4 favorites to win the match.

“It is a game we must win,” Brice said. “We are putting pressure on ourselves to perform to have a chance at Europe competitions. We have to come away with three points. We will make the tactical adjustments and move on.”

Here you go, GE.

Keep UP The Good Work-- KUPTGW. :)

When Foz did it in my Boro thread, it confused me, too, for a minute.

West Ham showing interest in Patterson

English Premier League Club West Ham have shown interested in young Dundee United left winger Jim Patterson. West Ham is currently starting Trevor Sinclair on the left wing. However, Sinclair looks out of position for the club and the Hammers could be looking for a replacement.

The transfer would have to come cheap for West Ham, who are reportedly insecure on the club finances, despite the recent selling of star midfielder Joe Cole.

Patterson has appeared in five matches thus far this season and has recorded one assist for the Terrors. He has widely considered to be in very good form of late and could be a good fit in the West Ham system of play.

The clubs were contacted and both denied comment regarding any transfer of Patterson.

Dundee United Reserves, U18s drop matches to Celtic

The Dundee United Reserves and U18 squad both traveled to Celtic Park today, but neither was able to come away with a victory. The Reserves lost a 2-0 match where Celtic scored goals in the 70th and 74th minute.

Dundee United held a slight advantage in possession but was out shot nine to three. The 70th minute goal scored by Celtic was finished by David Fernandez, who put the ball past Paul Jarvie after he was left wide open in front of the net. The 74th minute goal was scored by Peter Flynn after he won a header off of a cross.

Manager Tim Brice, who attended the game as a special guest to Celtic chairman Bob Quinn, was impressed of the play of his young keeper Paul Jarvie.
“Jarvie kept his team in the match, and that impressed me. I may look to get him some first team minutes in the upcoming cup,” Brice said.

The U18s also suffered a loss to the Celtic green. Dundee United also held possession in the his game but were out shot 6 to 3. Michael McGlinchey scored for Celtic in the 54th minute and David Pinkowski added another in the 57 minute as Celtic won 2-0.

The loss is the first of the season for the Dundee United U18s. Both teams will return to action when they host Livingston next week.

Partick Thistle top Dundee United with late strike

Dundee United dropped it is third consecutive decision today at Firhill Park in Glasgow, as they lost to Partick Thistle by a score of 3 to 2. Partick made a furious come back after trailing by two goals late in the first half. They capped it off in the 84th minute, when Paul Walker successfully nailed a strike.

Dundee United held a slight possession advantage for the match. Partick out shot Dundee United by a slim eight to six margin. The two teams were very evenly matched and the score reflected that.

“I am really disappointed we did not come away with a win,” Dundee United boss Tim Brice said. “It seems once we went up by two goals, we simply gave up. I guess my team felt like they had the win in the bag. This should be a lesson to my young players. That lesson is never stop playing.”

Jamie Mitchell had the first chance of the match in the 8th minute when he took a long range shot from about 35 yards out. The shot was low and on target, but Dundee United keeper Paul Gallacher did an outstanding to keep it out of the net.

Mitchell again had a chance in the 12th minute of action when Alex Burns swung in a cross. Mitchell went up against Dundee United defender Matt Wilson and won the ball in the air but his header went wide.

In the 15th minute Dundee United drew first blood when Billy Dodds took a deflection off of a Partick defender in the box and finished it for the goal. The play started when Charlie Miller made a pass out to left winger Jim Patterson. Patterson hit a poor cross but Burns for Partick failed to trap the ball and Dodds scooped it up and finished.

Mitchell again showed how dangerous he was in 21st minute when he took another shot. Gallacher pushed it aside and fell on the rebound with a Partick player looking on. Mitchell was obviously trying long shots.

In the 23rd minute, Gerry Britton of Partick could have leveled the match if not for the fine reflexes of Gallacher. The play was built slowly up by Partick and they were unlucky not to finish the chance.

The 24th minute could have brought the goal of the season for Dundee United, if it would have gone in the back of the net. Jim Patterson carried the ball to the byline and hit a cross in front of the goal. Stephen McConalouge was out of position but hustled to he ball and connected with a diving header. However, Partick keeper Kenny Arthur was up to the challenge and made the save.

McConalouge had another chance moments later but was unable to finish the break away when a Partick defender took the ball away right as McConalouge was getting ready to shoot.

Dundee United took a two goal lead when striker Dodds scored his second goal of the match. The shot was created when Daniele Chinarni played a long ball which McConalouge chased down. McConalouge ripped a shot at Arthur who managed to parry it but Dodds was it in the right position and simply tapped the ball into the goal.

Partick responded two minutes later after a Dundee United defensive mistake. Martin Hardie was able to run unchallenged through the midfield. He then made an easy pass to Mitchell who finished the pass to cut the deficit to one goal.

McConalouge had another chance right after halftime after he received a pass fro Stephen O’Donnell. However, the shot was saved by Arthur in stylish fashion.
McConalouge was easily winning through balls against a slower defensive unit from Partick.

The game was leveled in the 65th minute when Burns out jumped the Dundee United defense and headed home a corner kick. Dundee United has had problems defending corner kicks all season and today was no different.

The game was quiet for the rest of the match until the 81st minute, when Walker broke through for a breakaway. Jamie Buchan knocked the ball through. However, Gallacher managed to make a brilliant save.

Three minutes later, however, Walker got free again and this time finished it to take a dramatic 3-2 lead. Britton played a ball to Walker, but the ball took a strange bounce off Dundee United Chinarni which gave Walker an advantage to pursuing the ball. Walker came all alone against Gallacher. Gallacher managed the first save but gave up a rebound which Walker put away easily.

“We were just unlucky. We should have finished off an additional shot or two but it did not happen. For 85 minutes we played hard. It is just for about five minutes we had lapses and they took advantage of it,” manager Tim Brice said in the post game press conference.

“We are missing the rock of the defense in Danny Griffith. When he gets back from suspension, things will look up for the back line. We have given Mark Wilson the role of the central defender and he is young. It is inevitable that he is going to make mistakes due to youth. But for the most part, it was not his fault today.”

“We have lost three in a row - I am well aware of that. We need to make some decisions about tactics and players. My staff and I are going to take a close look at everything.”

The Dundee United A-Team will return to action when they host Hearts in a week.

Well as a Celtic fan, as long as they beat Rangers in your dynasty, I'll enjoy it. ;)

Good stuff though GE.

I know I'm late on this also, but everything I've heard has stated that Larsson wants to play back home in Sweden. Celtic are trying very hard to keep him around, but he seems pretty adamant about leaving.

Be sad to see him leave, he is Celtic.

Odd that they always sell him in CM. I usually keep him around as everyone on the team is overjoyed to be playing on the same team as him. He's great for keeping the team chemistry.

Good luck though, it's a heck of a task to build a Scottish team outside of the Old Firm into much of a power.

I did see where Dundee United beat Rangers 2-0 in real life, so I am sure you got a kick out of that. Mark Kerr, who is with Dundee United, scored a goal.

I certainly have my work cut out for me. Hopefully, the results will start going my way. I am devising a new tactic which should win some games.

The actual game playing on this dynasty will pick up again on Sunday. Right now, I do not have access to my computer with CM on it.

Readers -

I have decided to put this dynasty into a ‘sleeping’ state. No further updates will occur until further notification. However, there is good news. I have decided to being a new dynasty using CM4. The reason being is I would like to run all leagues. The dynasty will be much deeper and model CR’s current dynasty. CR, Calis, and myself are now doing dynasties, so sit back and enjoy the golden era of CM dynasties.
