Howdy y'all!
I'm heading to Austin for the South By Southwest Interactive Festival 11 to 15 March. I was wondering if anybody in FOF land could tell me where to have fun. Restaurants, clubs, bar, etc. And I'm staying at the Marriot downtown. Is it nice or a shithole? Is the neighborhood it is in nice? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

6th St. is the place to be. I think it's pretty close to your hotel. There are lot of places to go eat or have fun at in that area. I don't think you'll have many problems finding good restaurants, etc. I haven't been to Austin since Election Day 2000, I stood in the rain until 3 or 4 in the morning waiting for a victory speech that never came that night. So, it has been awhile, and I can't really think of any place off the top of my head, but I do know that there is lots to do in the downtown area. I'll try to talk to some of my friends who live there and find out some more info for you. Have fun!

Mariott is okay. I think that's the one right by I-35, though. And I hate them because they filed noise complaints because of live music on 6th Street. It's not in a neighborhood, it's on the end of 5th Street.
I live here, but you're pretty much covered already.

have a blast. austin is a great city. i miss it. (went to school there.)
6th street is a younger crowd, mostly UT kids - logan's is fun on congress/6th if you just want to plop down somewhere and not bar hop. the warehouse district a little bit west of 6th is also closeby and may not be as crowded as 6th, which can get downright unbearable sometimes b/c of the crowds. there are a bunch of new joints (north by northwest, iron cactus, bahama breeze come to mind) up around mopac/183, too, and around those areas, but the crowd is a little older. you've got to hit some restaraunts on the lake, though, like hula hut, for some outdoor 'ritas while watching the sunset over the lake. several places right by campus are fun, too - scholz beer garden and crown & anchor come to mind, and players has the best shake you'll ever have.
