View Full Version : Minor Pet Peeve--Mock Draft Assumptions

Mock drafts always assume that players will stay with the teams that drafted them for their entire career. How often does that actually happen in the salary cap / free agency era?

"He'll anchor the Giants O-Line for the next 15 years"

"Big Ben will be under center for the Cards for the next ten years"

Etc.

It's a minor point, but why don't they say--the Giants need an O-lineman. One is available here. He'll be a good player for them for the immediate future.

As I said--a minor pet peeve. Carry on.

Yeah, that's catchy!

They should say:

"The Cardinals got themselves a fine player that will be fixture in the lineup for the next 3 years afterwhich his rookie contract will expire and he'll be paid handsomely on the free agent market by another club."

Well, I think when you're talking about top 5 picks, you are genuinely expecting these players to be career starters.

I'm fine with hearing that stuff when it's talking about top 5-10 picks.. beyond that it's just silly.

Here's another one. Mock Drafts almost never project trades, even though there is almost zero chance that we'll even get through the first ten pics without one. What the hell is the point of projecting the first three rounds without guessing about at least a few trades?

It may be bad difficult to guess which day next month it's going to rain. But it's better to do that than to bet that it won't rain all month...

"He'll wallow in Arizona amongst sub-par talent before blossoming on another team 4 years later. Expect him to lead the Raiders to Super Bowl titles in 2008 and 2010."

Honestly, I thought Peyton Manning would leave after 3 or 4 seasons with the Colts. I thought the team would be terrible and he'd move on to another team with a huge contract.

Guess I was wrong. Sort of. :)

Unless we are all wrong about this guy and he turns out to be a big dope like Ryan Leaf was, and then he will be out of the league in 4 years.

No...he will stay with the cars till he retires, since everyone who plays on the cardinals retires here and get payed too much after their prime(cough cough Mr. Smith)
