View Full Version : Why doesn't Jim churn us for money every year?

Looking at the OOTP cycle and the inevitable TPF2... I wonder why Jim doesn't ? I'm quit sure he could go once a year with:

FOF2005 - The Pro Bowl
FOF2006 - Expanded off-Season problems for players,
FOF2007 - The GUI Update
FOF2008 - Graphical representation of plays
FOF2009 - Expanded Coach Profiles
FOF2010 - Expanded Stadium module

FOF4 was released the year before 2k4.

I'm not sure if that's supposed to be a shot at Marcus, but I think every version of OOTP that I've bought has been enough of an improvement to warrant a full release. Honestly, I think Jim is further along with what he wants to do with his games so that he doesn't have a number of items to add/fix every year. The core of FOF is solid; OOTP6 is about to feature an entirely new rating system. The trade-off is that FOF stops short of being the end-all, be-all of football sims - no customization, etc., whereas OOTP has everything you'd want, but is lacking at the core.

Oh no, no shot at Markus... Guess I shoud've also included the Mogul Series and Strat-o-matic too. I have OOTP3 and 4, I just stopped there because I'm not really in to baseball all that much...

Just wondering why Jim doesn't see the need to piece-out yearly version of his sports-sim when everyone else does.

Yeah, he's a lot nicer than EA and everyone else in the console business but I know a lot of people who still go out and have to buy the new version or Madden every f'ing year (this year with more "BOOM!" and nothing else).

About Baseball Mogul

And while the graphics and player-specific animations have always been a strong point to the Slugfest series, one thing that has been lacking in the past has been the kind of depth found in competing baseball franchises. Midway has addressed that point in a big way, acquiring the rights to the Baseball Mogul engine to implement into their franchise mode.

And for those who don't know, acquiring Baseball Mogul for your franchise is like adding A-Rod to your lineup. It's the recognized leader in baseball simulators, and while it remains to be seen how a serious simulation blends with the beanballs and brawls of a typical Slugfest matchup, the thought of seeing Mogul make it's way onto consoles in one form or another is tantalizing to say the least.

About Baseball Mogul
I think adding Mogul is like adding K-Rod to your team.

And I remember Microsoft tried this back in 2001 or something with their PC game. I bought it and it was shit... every player was named snake as the career progressed.

EA tried to do that with FOF... :(

God that was a terrible game! They didn't jack to that sequel other than slightly alter the rosters and adjust ratings for any obvious stars. If I recall, they even kept the fictional bench warmer names in the next version from the first EA roster.

I bought FOF2002 because I never had a pro FOF before... worst game ever. I forgot what a major bug was, but man, it had a hughe bug that totally fucked up the game, and EA never fixed it. I returned the game, but somehow the liscence still worked on the old computer, so I could have kept it for free if I wanted.

IT was something to do with contracts. Guys would play a phantom year for no money.

I think people mis-understand how much different baseball and football are, at least from a programming standpoint. Not that I'm a programmer and know first hand, but so many programmers try to get baseball right and so many fail.

Isn't ironic that a guy from Germany has the leading career baseball sim? :)

I don't know what version FBCB is as far as releases go, but I'm amazed at the amount of data stored in something as big as the college scene. Baseball just seems like there is so much going on, similar to the college sport. It's funny seeing companies like EA just now in 2004, having features such as minor leagues. Some text sim virgin is all jacked up looking at AA and AAA players, something us text simmers take for granted.

With so much going on underneath, I'm amazed at how much is right with the group of text sim programmers we currently support.

FBCB is on version 1, though I think the parent game, FBB, is on version 2 or 3.

I'm glad Jim doesn't - or at least doesn't plan to - charge for the same old game every year.

I'd be happy with a rotating schedule that looks like this:

2004 - TCY
2005 - new game
2006 - FOF
2007 - TCY
etc.

As long as the game is not just a "data update" I like games which come out every year. For example Madden etc.

"...acquiring Baseball Mogul for your franchise is like adding A-Rod to your lineup. It's the recognized leader in baseball simulators..."

That is really a ridiculous statement. If this was 1999, that might be true. Hell, even if you think BBM is still a great game, I find it impossible to suggest that it is the "recognized leader in baseball simulators" with a straight face. At the very least, it has a solid competitor in OOTP. IN reality, OOTP passed and lapped BBM around 2002.

I hate marketing hyperbole.

Jim has put a new football game every year hasn't he? One year brake by doing college football.

But, I remember FOF, then 2 EA games, then TCY, then FOF4 and now FOF 2004.

I wish he would do a new college and pro football game every year. I know I would buy them. I've never been disappointed in a Sol product yet.
