The apparent proposal came at the end of a halftime contest on the Wizards home court Saturday night.

The woman was blindfolded, sent out on the court, and told if she could find a local bank's mascot, she would win free Wizards tickets.

As the crowd yelled "hot" and "cold," the woman roamed the court for about 10 seconds.

Then, as she found and touched the bank mascot, she was told she won the contest.

However, the public address announcer said there was a surprise.

The man appeared from the bank mascot's costume, grabbed a microphone and then got down on one knee.

As he began to speak to the woman, she paused and grabbed her face in shock.

Then, as the crowd expected the man to pop question, the woman turned away from the man, and sprinted full speed across the basketball court.

After running up a tunnel, she was stopped by a security guard.

There was no indication on the broadcast whether the proposal was legitimate or not.

But the stunt surprised the groaning crowd as a message saying, "She said No!" appeared on the arena's scoreboard. <!--stopindex-->

I read about this over the weekend. What makes you think it's not legit?

1. There was no indication on the broadcast whether the proposal was legitimate or not.<!--stopindex--> That just sounds odd.

2. Something about her reaction (and his) just doesn't seem right.

Who cares? Who is he... Ahmad Rashad?

Can't stand those jackasses mucking up a good game with that nonsense.

Here's a true story. I was at the Stadium once with my older brother. Now, I'm the cut-up in the family. This was a Sunday game. So there was a loooong break for the seventh inning stretch.

Wonder of wonders, I didn't have to take a whiz. So I'm sitting there with my brother during the anouncements of birthdays and anniversaries and congratulations and such.

As they're going through it, I turn to my brother and say something to the effect that I bet him dinner that some jackass was going to propose to his girl. He, of course responded that there was no way he'd take that bet as you could always find some knucklehead doing something like that.

We were loud enoungh that a couple people in the section overheard us and started cracking up at our exchange. Within two minutes it seemed like a couple of rows around us had heard about our commentary and started joking about as well (the Rashad flopsweat proposal story and such).

Sure enough... the last announcement was a proposal and it seemed like the whole section started cracking up. Then we hear this squeal. It turns out a woman three rows behind us was the target. I think they sat here uncomfortably for the bottom of the seventh before leaving.

Looks legit to me, you can tell in the slideshow that she was running with a purpose. She wasn't half assing it, she wanted to get the hell out of there.

I saw one at the Ballpark in Arlington a few years back where the girl got up and left.

It might simply be that she was mortified to be asked to get married by someone she didn't want to marry, and he was too embarrassed after she rejected him, for either of them to want to publicly discuss it, so no one has been able to confirm it.

I don't know. Unless something comes out about this being a fake, what good is pulling a stunt like this if no one knows it was a fake? That's the payoff for those involved.

They showed the clip on Leno last night. I can't see why it wouldn't be legit. I mean, if it's fake, what's the punchline?

Anyone remember the guy who proposed at a baseball game a few years back, got the same reaction, and tried to chase the girl down? She kept running, pausing every now and then to grab people's drinks or hot dogs to throw at him. Good times...

I want to see video of that.

That's funny though, Skydog. Good share.

Well, Jaime Kennedy pulled this exact stunt on his show (The Jaime Kennedy Experiment).

Just sitting in the stands, the arena gave him a microphone, he proposed to a girl (actress) who said no, then got up and left. He sat there crying for 10 minutes while the crowd just laughed, was shocked, etc...

To make it even better, the team then gave him a chance to hit one of those free-throw shots for money... and he missed horribly. He then collapsed on the court, again crying.

Obviously the arena was completey in on this, and then ran a video of him explaining how he'd just fooled everybody.

Still in this case... if there isn't a revelation or payoff of some sort - I would expect it is legit.

Exactly. If there's no payoff, those people must really enjoy inside jokes.

If that were true I wouldn't have been a starter in high school. I'm not all state or anything but I can drain the bucket regularly. I just despise the sport because its management and its players are phony ass loser prima donnas who don't give a shit about the sport. The game itself is about as entertaining as having your stomach pumped, or sitting through a golf match on TV...not sure which would be worse.

The one thing that seems odd is that the MCI Center had a "She Said No!" graphic prepared and ready to go on the Jumbotron. I would think that if it was legit, that even a professional sports team would consider that to be bad taste. (I mean if the guy got humiliated in front of 18,000 folks (ok it's a Wizards game so 10,000) do you really need to rub salt in the wounds?)

Ewww...I would say no too if I had to see a *Wizards* game to marry the person. :) :)
The Wizards game I watched some of the other day was one of the saddest exhibitions of "defense" i've ever seen in any NBA game.

Lose a bet?

heh heh...no, just flipping through my NBA Season Pass channels and I ran into it...watching the other team get layups with 5 Wizard players standing around while the score flipped to 116-83 was about the same effect as watching a traffic accident, I think.... :)

Something needs to change on that team, though I wouldn't know what...

They were talking about this on ESPN radio the other night, and the guys got in touch with the one of the beat writers for the Wizards. They asked him about the incident, and the reporter said that he was pretty sure that it was all a set up. I can't remember his exact reasoning behind thinking that, but he said he was almost positive that it was fake...
