A local newscast was doing one of it's promo's when I hear the announcer say "it was one of the most violent deaths in history" so of course I turn my attention to the television and see that they are talking about Mel Gibson's new movie and the death of Jesus.
One of the most violent deaths in history?? Give me a break. It wouldn't even make that list this year most likely. One of the most unfortunate? I could see that but of course that doesn't work as the death was God's will so it had to be done. One of the most influential deaths almost assuredly. Right behind the Kennedy shooting of course. ;)
One of my favorite Bill Hicks bits is when he talks at length about the kennedy assassination and he ends it by saying, "
'People say to me, Bill, get over it, it was a long time ago. Just get over it. Quit bringing it up. '
'I say, ok, I'll quit bringing it up just as soon as you stop bringing Jesus up to me. It was a long time ago. Just get over it.'
"
This was the basis of my little joke above just in case anyone wondered.
Anyway, my point is why the needless exxageration? It gives the station a bad name and makes it look like they're hawking some kind of big carnival and the Jesus exhibit is the main sideshow attraction. [ right, it's the news so this should be obvious ] It's as if the announcer didn't feel that bringing up the savior was enough to get viewers so they decided to spice the story up a bit. This, deep in the heart of the bible belt.
I don't know. I think that's pretty sad actually.
