<b>BOMBS AWAY - Golf for the Heavy Hitters</B>
Duluth, Ga. - Break out the artillery and swing from the heels, boys. Let the big dog eat. Grip it and rip it. Tee it high and let it fly.
It's time for some heavy metal thunder.
Golfers playing in the Bell South Classic, which starts today, are going to have to lean on their drivers at The Atlanta Athletic Club. Fad Braxton might need both of his drivers.
How long is the course? The score card says 7,213 yards, but the score card lies. Recent rains have eliminated roll in the fairways, making the par-70 course play much longer. It fact, it's closer to a hiking trail than a golf course.
Seven of the 12 par-4s are longer than 440 yards. Two of them, converted par-5s, are longer than 470. No. 18 measures 490, but the players' yardage book lists it at 499. From the back tee to a back pin, it's every inch of 510.
There is no let-up. The par-3s average 205.2 yards, and water guards the green on three of them.
The great Bob Jones was a member here, but trust us, he never played this layout. It isn't a golf course, it's a backpacking trip. This is what the sport gets for putting titanium in drivers and moon dust in golf balls.
Earlier in the week, golfers trudged off the 18th green after practice rounds singing the same tune.
"It's very long," said last weeks winner Jeff Nights, and Nights is above average length wise off the tee.
"It is playing long, and then some," said TE Almighty, a player who's been in contention each week.
"It's one of the longest courses I've ever played," said Fad Braxton, whos hoping to break his run of bad luck this week..
In unleashing this monster, the PGA tour has allowed players' to take a rip and gotten away from making them hit pencil-thin fairways surrounded by jungle-thick rough.
The Atlanta Athletic Club is a different kind of beast.
"You have to hit driver," Nights said, "and you have to bust it."
Said Duncan Baxter: "This is definitely a course for the driver. You just can't get around it with a 3-wood or 2-iron, as you could at Royal Lytham (for the British Open). You even find people using 3-woods and 2-irons at the Masters now. This is definitely a driver's course."
Breeze, the PGA of America's CEO, said that was no accident.
"The focus was trying to make sure we put the driver in the hands of the players," Breeze said. "Basically, we recognize that the players today are doing extraordinary things. They are longer than we ever dreamed about, and all we are trying to do here is take a golf course and let them drive the ball."
<b><i>Narrowing the field</B></i>
To a man, the players have described the course as tough but straightforward and fair. Most welcomed the opportunity to let out the shaft off the tee.
"It's nice to see a course where the driver is needed a lot," said Brian "Putting Butcher" Babson, one of the longest players on tour. "Courses tend to be overpowered nowadays and people don't need to hit driver that often. But this week there's a huge advantage to being long and straight."
Some players said the premium on distance has eliminated as much as 75% of the field before the first shot is struck. Players with long odds this week include:

Kyle Smith
Ron Juckett
Alan Kelmay
Kyle Kappe III
Duncan Baxter
Michael Weideman
Fad Braxton, <i>(poor Fad - looks like Jack Daniels sales will be up again this week)</i>

Jimmy Fuijita
"I think this golf course most certainly favors a long hitter, somebody who hits it long and high," said Bay Hill champion Colton Mayes. "I think that's a test of the player's ability we haven't seen much lately."
The list of players who hit it long and high starts with Brian Babson, but includes Mike Tokunaga, David Gonzalez, while Kevin Wayne and last weeks runner up Rob Nielsen.also fit the profile.
"Babson, Gonzalez and Nielsen and these types of players will come to the fore, I'm sure," said Baxter.
Said Pebble Beach winner Stan Gunner: "I think this course is actually the perfect set-up for David Gonzalez. I think he's smiling all the way."
Tour Commissioner Breeze hinted that a short hitter has almost no chance to win.
"If you hit it straight and hit every fairway, you can get away with (being short)," he said. "But long driving is going to be a huge advantage, unless you are putting exceptionally well. The length of the course, over four days, is going to get to a lot of guys.
"If a guy hits it 320 and straight, he's going to be in the top 10. There's just no two ways about it. If he putts good, he might win. But if he doesn't putt good, he's still going to be up there because 320 and straight is going to be awesome this week and there's not a whole lot of guys who do it."
Although the entire course is long, the final four holes are truly back-breakers. No. 15 is a 227-yard par-3, No. 16 a 441-yard par-4, No. 17 a 207-yard par-3 and No. 18 a 490-yard par-4.
"Having a four-shot lead going into 15 is not safe," said announcer Gary McCord, "There will be no lead that is safe going into the last four holes."
<b><i>18 a true test</b></i>
The 18th is particularly scary, requiring a long and accurate drive and a second shot that can play as long as 240 yards to a green guarded by water in front and to the right. Golf legend Arnold Palmer called the hole "ridiculous."
But is it fair?
"It is," said Mayes, "if you don't assign a par to it."
Said Nielsen: "What a finishing hole. I had to hit driver, 5-wood there the other day. I don't know what the rest of the guys have got to do."
Babson hit two 3-irons into the water in a practice round. Faxton and Smith, two shorter hitters, played together Tuesday and both had 3-woods into the green. They weren't alone. Marshall Herd Jimmy Fuijita also had 3-woods Tuesday; Wayne had a 1-iron.
"I would just hate to see the leader have to lay up on Sunday," said Palmer.
Don't laugh. Duncan Baxter said if he came to No. 18 Sunday with a two-stroke lead and didn't hit a good drive, he would lay up and play the hole as a par-5.
"There's a lot of the field, unless it's downwind, they can't get there in two," Tokunaga said. "It's just a long, long hole. It's a long, long course."
There's just one thing left to say:
<b><i>Bombs away.</i></b>

What Rob Nielsen didn't know, after playing a practice round with Fad Braxton, was that Fad did indeed have a three-wood into the green. Two of them, as a matter of fact, were needed to reach the long par 4 in three shots.
What Nielsen also didn't know was that Braxton had arrived at the course only minutes before his tee time for the practice round.
You see, what happened after we left Braxton at the sleazy roadside bar is kind of a mystery. The facts, though, are this:
-He woke up in a dingy Jacksonville motel room with a screaming headache.
-He had $3,000 in his pants pocket, but no wallet.
-He also had no car.
-In his car were his golf clubs, which are now presumed to be missing along with his car.
-He had a tattoo on his right thigh with the words "Destiny" surrounded by a pierced heart.
More information as developments warrant.
I'm hoping Braxton can find someone who can fill him in on details from that evening.

<b>Bell South Classic - Atlanta Athletic Club - Round 1</b>
<b>Brian "Putting Butcher" Babson</b> - arguably the longest player on tour, Babson was hoping to captilize this week by getting off to a good start. However, Babson is also a poor putter, hince the nick-name, and he's inconsistent. If hot, he could shoot the lights out, but we really haven't seen that from him yet this season. He starts off with a nice birdie on number 1, actually sinking a putt in excess of 20 feet to go 1 under. He misses a birdie putt of about half that distance on 3 and settles for par. The par 5- 5th proves to be quite easy on this day. The drive was around 350, leaving only 190 yards to the pin. He reaches the green in two and two putts. On 8 he hits a long drive, but it's off line and behind trees. He comes up clutch though - when he takes an 8 iron - opens the face a touch and gets the ball airbourne quickly, goes over the tree and the ball lands on the green within 15 feet of the hole. A miraculous shot that allows him to get his 3rd birdie on the front 9. <b>Front 9 Score - 32 : (-3)</b>
<b>Michael Weideman</b> - Weideman isn't long off the tee, but he is one of the better iron hitters on the tour. He'll put a lot of pressure on his irons if he doesn't hit good drive, but he might be able to overcome short drives. The first 3 holes go down as routeen pars. Number 4, Michael sinks a 20 foot par putt. Number 6 he gets up and down out of a bunker to save par. Number 8 and 9 are birdied, when the drives were in the middle of the fairway and he's able to use his iron playing skill to get under par. <b>Front 9 Score 33 : (-2)</b>
<b>Sterling Silvers</B> - Silvers can't get much going on the front 9. He has to hit a clutch 2nd shot on number 2, after his drive is short and left. The second shot is handy around the green, he chips up to 5 feet and makes the par putt. On 5 he plays smart - to the green in 3, and sink the 11 foot birdie putt. But a poor drive on 9 forces him to layup with the second shto and he can't get up and down again to save par. <B>Front 9 Score - 35 : (EVEN)</b>
<b>Fad Braxton</B> - Fad is becoming a cult favorite here on tour. The story leaking out about his rather interesting night following the DQ at TPC has made him a household name. During the round today, several spectators, who seem to be more interested in motorcycles, brawls and drinking were following him around and rooting him on. Rumor has it, they were his - um <i>"drinking buddies"</i> during last weeks bender, but Braxton claims to not remember any of them <i>(including the scantily clad blond with the huge boobs).</i> Whomever these guys are, Fad should consider keeping them around. He begins the round with a birdie. He decides to play smart off the tee and try to rely on his putting. On 1 he sinks a 24 foot putt for bird. On 3 he hits the green, but a bad break causes the ball to back off the green. He chips up and sinks a tough 8 foot par putt. Another great putt on 6 gives him birdie. Two more putts made (8 and 9), both from over 25 feet give him birds. The shortest driver on tour is 4 under on the front thanks to a hot putter. It will be difficult to match this pace, but he's playing well right now. <b>Front 9 Score - 31 : (-4)</b>
<b>Rob Nielsen</b> - Coming off a heartbreaking loss last week, Rob is excited to hit this monster of a course - feeling he's got an inside track to be on the weekend leaderboard. Nilsen uses his length to his advantage early going birdie birdie out of the gate. After 2 pars a drive of 330 allows him to reach the par 5 - 5th in two and two putt for his 3 birdie on the front. The 9th hole is only about 420 yards, and Rob felt this was one of the true birdie ops on the course. He tries to his a big drive, but puts himself in trouble off the tee. A cluch second shot below a tree branch rolls up in front. He then chips and putt for par. <b>Front 9 Score 32 : (-3)</b>
<b>Its Craptacular</B> Crappy is not long off the tee, and this course is going to be a real test for him. It starts off great - a long birdie putt drops. But the good news is short lived. A bogey at two occures when he has to hit a 3 iron into the green and it doesn't hold. Number 3 is another bogey when the drive is short and the 470 yard hole isn't reached in two. This streaky golfer is now scratching it around, hoping to find a groove. He doesn't find it on 4. He misses the green off the tee and can't get up and down. Now he's played 4 holes, has yet to par and only birdied 1 of the 4. The next 2 are pared. Number 7 - the green is missed and he can't get up and down. Number 8 - short drive bogey. Number 9 the drive is in the rough, but Crappy does manage to scratch out a par. <b>Front 9 Score 39 : (+4)</b>

<b>Mike Tokunaga</B> - Mike is another long htter, and an iron willed player, who needed his focus today. Number 2 is a 3 putt bogey. At 4 he gets the stroke back - thanks to a 7 iron that stops only 4 feet from the hole. The 5th is easy for another of the long hitter. He reaches in two and two putts for his second birdie in as many holes. A tough putt on number 6 nearly cost him a stroke. The big breaking putt from 11 feet was misready by the caddy, but Tokunaga focused in on the shot and believed in his own assessment, saving par. Number 7, once again forces Tokunaga to focus in. He misses the green off the tee short side, but hits a great chip that catches the fringe first to take the steam out of the shot, then it trickles down to within 3 feet of the hole. He can't scrape out a par on 8 and gives a stroke back when he misses the green with the approach and can't duplicate the marvelous chip from the 7th.<b>Front 9 Score 35 : (EVEN)</b>
<b>Alan Kelmay</b> - Kelmay's lack of length off the tee didn't hurt him early. He hits a super 5 iron into the green at 1 and gets bird. On two its the 3 iron combined with a putt sunk from 19 feet. On 5 he birds by hitting the green in regulation, but getting the ball inside 7 feet. A great putt on 7 dropped from 33 feet for birdie. On 9 he scrapes the ball around but sinks the 17 foot par put. <b>Front 9 Score 31 : (-4)</b>
<b>Ron Juckett</b> - Juckett misses a 9 foot par put ton 1. He misses the green at 2 with his 4 iron and then can't get up and down. On 3 he does even worse - settling for double. In the first 3 holes Ron is 4 over, and the length is really killing him. a poor iron 3rd shot on 5 keeps him from having a run at birdie. He manages to get up and down from the sand on 6 or he'd have had another bogey. He can't get up and down from the short side fringe on 7 and 9 is too much for him as well. This streaky player is on a terrible run right now shooting 41 on a par 35 front 9. <b> Front 9 Score 41 : (+6)</b>
<b>Jeff Nights</b> - Could we get our first back to back winner? Nights starts out Double bogey, bogey so things don't look good. But this focused golfer gathers his composure and birdies the next two holes. In fact, he birdies two more on the front 9 (7 and 9) and manages to finish under par for the first 9. <b>Front 9 Score 34 : (-1)</b>
<b>Kyle Kappe III</B> - birdie on 1. A clutch chip on 3 saves par. Back to back birds on 4 and 5 put him 3 under for the front 9. Then a rare big drive on 8 sets him up for yet another birdie. Kappe, another player that was supposed to struggle on this course is sitting 4 under. <b>Front 9 Score 31 : (-4)</b>
<b>David Gonzalez</b> - The favorite of many experts coming into this week, Gonzalez starts off with a drive of 343 yards - just to send notice that length wouldn't be a problem for him. He birdies 1. A great putt from 23 feet gives him bird on 4. A huge drive on 5 allows him to reach the green in two. The eagle putt from 44 comes up about 2 feet short. Tap in for birdie. He gets a little lose off the tee on 6 and settles for bogey. He does get the stroke back on number 9. <b>Front 9 Score 32 : (-3)</b>
Breeze
03-01-2004, 12:42 PM
<b>Duncan Baxter</b> - Another player, who may be in over their head on this corse. He starts with a par, but his lack of length sees him bogey the next 2. A lack of length also prevent him from birding the par 5 - 5th. The driver is the nemisis on the 8th as well. This time it's not as much the length as the accuracy. <b>Front 9 Score 37 : (+2)</b>
<B>Kyle Smith</B> - the short hitting Smith is up, will he struggle like other short hitters Baxter and Juckett or thrive like Braxton or Kappe? Smith scrapes out a par on 1, then gets up and down from the rough for par on 2. His ability to save par runs out on 3 and 4 where he bogeys. He makes a 15 foot birdie putt on 5 and follows that with a birdie putt on 6. He sinks a 3rd birdie putt - this one from 31 feet on 9. He's 1 under on the front, but he easily could have been several strokes over par, but he found ways to make a save. <b>Front 9 Score 34 : (-1)</b>
<b>Kevin Wayne</b> - Wayne is a big hitter, who should thrive here, but he pars out. On 8 his length gave him a good shot at birdie, but he pushed the 8 iron right and left himself a 28 foot birdie putt, which he missed. <b>Front 9 Score 35 : (EVEN)</b>
<b>Bradley Nowell</b> - Nowell starts off the tourney by getting up and down for par. Then he pars the next 4 without any effort, but he can't make a run at bird. On 6 he sinks a 17 foot par putt. On 7 the putt falls from 13 for birdie. On 8 it's the iron approach to within 6 feet that sets up another bird. And the front 9 is closed with a putt from 22 feet for his 3rd straight birdie. <B>Front 9 Score 32 : (-3)</b>
<b>Stan Gunner</b> - Gunner pars the first 3. Bird at 4 thanks to an excellent 6 iron off the tee that back up and stopped only 7 feet from the pin. Number 8 is a 300+ yard drive, and a 7 iron into the green for birdie. Number 9 is a drive in the rough, and pitch out below a tree and pitch to the green and 2 putts from 29 feet for bogey. <b>Front 9 Score 35 : (EVEN)</b>
<b>Colton Mayes</b> - Mayes finished strong last week and is looking to stay hot. A birdie birdie start is a good way to do that. The par 5 -5th is reached in two and two putted for birdie. The final two holes on the front are both birdied and Mayes has his second straight 30. Talk about being on a hot streak - WOW. <b>Front 9 Score 30 : (-5)</b>

<B>AJ Tucker</b> - Tucker starts with a bogey then settles down. He birdies the par 5, but laying up and hittng a great 9 iron inside 5 feet. He finishes the front by paring out. He does have a shot at being aggressive with the approach at 9, but he pulls the ball and misses the green to the left. <b>Front 9 Score 35 : (EVEN)</b>
<b>TE Almighty</b> - A 26 foot birdie putt at 1 is followed by a terrible drive bogey at 2. A bird at 3 and everyone following Almighty is getting motion sickness. A 300 yard drive at 5 gives Almighty a shot at getting to the green in two. The 4 wood comes up just short, but he gets up and down for birdie. On 9 a terrible drive puts him in danger of dropping a stroke, but he comes up with a clutch 2nd shot and 2 putts from 45 feet. <b>Front 9 Score 33 : (-2)</b>
<b>Shane Kormelink</b> - A perfectly placed drive of about 278 allows him to attack the pin at 1. He converts and birds the hole. The next 6 are solid pars. On 8 he hits a big drie, but he can't capitalize on the relatively short second shot - settling for par. On 9, the drive is no where near as good as 8, but he hits a better iron approach and sinks the 22 foot birdie. <b>Front 9 Score 33 : (-2)</b>
<b>Kevin Boroniec</b> - Kevin starts out with 3 steady pars and an up and down par save on 4. On 5 he hits a big drive, but his corse management skills told him not to attempt to reach the green in two. He elected to play to the green in regulation and is rewarded with an easy 8 foot birdie putt. Two holes later he sinks a 24 foot birdie putt. <b>Front 9 Score 33 : (-2)</b>
<b>Marshall Herd</b> - Herd starts by leaning on his putter. Number 1 is birdied when a 20 footer falls. On 2 he hits a good drive, but can't capitalize, and settles for par. An 11 footer finds the bottom of the cup on 3 for birdie. A slippery 9 foot par putt drops on 4. Number 5 the putter comes up big again - a 28 foot putts rattles home. The final 4 are pars. <b>Front 9 Score 32 : (-3)</b>
<b>Jimmy Fuijita</b> - 1 - Par, 2 - 3 putt bogey, 3 - par, 4 - 20 foot birdie putt made, 5 - par, 6 - a poor iron approach - settle for par, 7 - par, 8 - par, 9 a par putt drops from 13 feet. <b>Front 9 Score 35 ; (EVEN)</b>
<b>Rolin Bywater</b> - Which 9 will kill him this week? Bogey, Bogey, and he can't scramble out of trouble on 3 - Bogey. <i>Looks like it might be this one</i> He does gather his composure for a birdie on 6. The iron approach there stops 10 inches from the pin. <b>Front 9 Score 37 : (+2)</b>

<b>Bell South Classic - Back 9</b>
<b>Brian Babson - (-3)</b>
Number 10 starts off with a great drive <i>($50 bucks worth?...we'll see)</i>. The approach is nice and the 12 foot birdie putt - misses. The drive at 12 is 347 yards - leaving him exactly 200 to the middle of the green. He reaches in two and...3 putts for par. Number 13, Babson is forced to go with a fairway wood off the tee to keep from hittng through the fairway. The iron approach is great and the 8 foot birdie - goes in. On 16, Babson misses the fairway - the second shot reaches the green, but he's left with a putt about a mile long for birdie. Since putting isn't his thing - it's not surprising he 3 putts for bogey. 18 is ugly. Babson's drive is long but right and it ends up in some mogles. With the ball well above his feet, he elects to be aggressive <i>a real surprise here</i> and he pulls the ball into the water on the front right. Drops, chips up and doubles the final hole.
<b>Scores 33 : 37 (-1)</b>
<b>Michael Weideman - (-2)</b>
The back 9 start out pretty good. He pars 10, then hits a drive right down the middle on 11 - attacks the pin and converts the birdie. 13 is another birdie op, but the putt slips by the hole, grazing the top edge. On 15, Michael's drive is a little week, his second swing on the second shot appears labored and he is forced to sink an 11 foot putt to save par. The long walk on this course appears to be getting to the <i>How do you say this nicely? Um...less than fit</i> Weideman. On 16, he doesn't reach the green in regulation and he can't get up and down to save par. On 17, his tee ball is pulled into the water. He drops then manages to gunch the ball in the water again. Chip on and sink the 9 foot putt for 6. Number 18 is not much better. The extremely long and difficult par 4 is too much as Michael bogeys. He closes the final 3 holes - 5 over par - and his lack of fitness kills what was looking like a good round.
<b>Scores - 33 : 39 (+2)</b>
<b>Sterling Silvers - (E)</b>
This course really puts pressure on players, and Silver's starts to feel it at the turn. On 10 he finds a bunker by the green and bogeys. On 11 he misses the green with the approach and he can't get up and down - bogey. On 12 - one of the easier holes on the course - Silvers was looking to stop his bad streak, but it only got worse. From the tee box he was looking for a big drive in an effort to reach the par 5 in two. He didn't get it - in fact, he missed the fairway and ended up blocked by a tree. Trying to make something happen Silvers attempted to hook the ball around the edge of the tree and gain a significant chunck of yardage down the fairway. The ball clips the edge and ricochets diagonally across the fairway and into the trees on the opposite side. With his backswing block - Silvers has not choice but to chip back into fairway laterally. His 4th shot is from the middle of the fairway, but it's also still 270 yards from the green. He lays up, Then with a wedge in his hand for par - he hits the ball long and leaves himself a 31 foot bogey putt - missed and double is recorded. 4 over on the first 3 holes of the back 9. From here he settles down. He birdies 15, but drops the stroke on 18, when he hits a poor drive right left and is blocked by trees. Rather than risk hitting the ball in the water, he lays up, Chips on and 2 putts for 5.
<b>Scores 35: 39 (+4)</b>
<b>Fad Braxton - (-4)</b>
On the leaderboard early Fad is walking on cloud nine. He has also benefited from some unconcious putting. It's his best shot this week, since he'll be hitting a bunch of flat faced irons into greens and probably will be faced with plenty of long putts. On 10 the length gets to him. The par putt is over 16 feet and he misses. On 11, it takes a great 5 iron to salvage the hole have a terribly short drive. On 12 he plays the par 5 like a par 5 and the 3rd shot 9 iron is within 10 feet. The hot putter doesn't let him down here as he sinks it to get back to even on the back 9. The 450 yard par 4 - 16th was too much. A 245 yard drive left him with a 5 iron into the green. It was on-line but short and he can't get up and down. Number 18 is also too much. He doesn't even attempt to reach the green in two - hoping he can chip and putt for par, but he misses the 13 footer and settles for bogey. A disappointing finish, but I'm sure given his recent history and the fact this course isn't playing to his strength Braxton will take it - in fact, he'd probably take it on the next 3 rounds as well.
<b>Scores 31: 37 (-2)</b>
<b>Rob Nielsen - (-3)</b>
Nielsen misses the fairway on 10, and that eventually leads to bogey - when the approach shot catches a flyer and bounces over the back of the green and he can't get up and down. At 11 he has a chance to get the stroke back, but his putt from 18 is misread - as it starts moving right when it dies as opposed to holding the line. Number 12 starts off with a 336 yard drive, and he reaches the green in two with a 4 iron. He two putts from 44 feet and gets birdie. The next 3 holes are birdie, birdie, birdie and Nielsen has entrenched himself on the leaderboard. The first two birdies are set up by big drives. The 3rd was just a well played par 3. Number 16 start off looking like it's going to be another birdie. The drive is well over 300 yards, but he pushed the approach and two putts from 35 feet. Number 17 is pared. !8 starts with a 300+ yard drive. He decides to fire at the pin, but hangs the ball out to the right - probably guarding against the water to the front and left. He's long as well and the 28 foot birdie putt goes 6 feet by. The comebacker is made and Nielsen pars 18.
<b>Scores 32: 32 (-6)</b>
<b>Its Craptacular - (+4)</b>
Crappy really struggled early with the length of this course. He missed greens with long irons and didn't get up and down well. On the back, he elected to play more to his strengths. He pars the first two and his confidence goes up. On 12, his drive is bad, but he hoods a 4 iron and punches beneath a tree limb and it goesl 200 yards down the fairway. The amazing scramble shot allows him to hit a 9 iron on the green - which stops on 7 feet from the hole, birdie made. The next 4 are pars. Number 17, a par 3 bites him however. His approach finds a bunker to the left. He's left with a very long sand shot. He blasts it out well, but it has too much backspin - doesn't release and comes up well short of the hole. In fact, he misses the 27 foot par putt and settles for bogey..

Why was I supposed to struggle?
Hey Bug,
If you read the intro you'll know. Here's the section that highlights the reason I pointed out that you might struggle:
---------------------------------------------------------------
<b><i>Narrowing the field</B></i>
To a man, the players have described the course as tough but straightforward and fair.
Its Craptacular
Marshall Herd
Kyle Smith
Ron Juckett
Alan Kelmay
Kyle Kappe III
Duncan Baxter
Michael Weideman
Fad Braxton, (poor Fad - looks like Jack Daniels sales will be up again this week)
TE Almighty
Shane Kormelink
Jimmy Fuijita
"I think this golf course most certainly favors a long hitter, somebody who hits it long and high," said Bay Hill champion Colton Mayes. "I think that's a test of the player's ability we haven't seen much lately."
--------------------------------------------------------------
It's just an observation that this course isn't set up for your golfers strengths. A bunch of length checks and iron checks on this one. You could still win, just means you'll need luckier dice rolls than a long player would.

<b>Mike Tokunaga - (E)</b>
Bogey at 10 start the back 9 off on a bad foot, but he rebounds quickly. On 12 he hits a big drive, which sets up birdie. This is something we expected to see more of from Mike. The next 2 are easy pars. The par 3 - 15th is a disappointing par. The 4 iron off the tee is only 6 feet from the pin, but Mike pushes the putt and misses the hole completely. Number 18 starts with a drive to the left. The approach is blocked by trees, but Mike elects to go for the green anyway. He clips a branch and the ball shoots down into the water. He drops then hits the ball over the back of the green by the spectator stands. He takes his drop (penatly free) and chips the ball on the green, but the downhill chip rolls by the hole and through the green to the fringe on the opposite end. He then 2 putts for a 7. This is a very disappointing round for a player that should play well on this course. He'll need to play real well tomorrow to make the cut.
<b>Score 35: 38 (+3)</b>
<b>Alan Kelmay - (-4)</b>
Kelmay shocked a bunch of fans, experts, and tour players by going 4 under on the front. Can he continue this pace? On 10 - his drive is adequate, but he's still left with a 6 iron into the green and is forced to two putt from 33 feet to save par. Number 11 he has to hit a 5 iron into the green after a short drive, but he again manages to scratch out a par. He pars the par 5 - 12th. Numbers 13 and 14 - he leans on his putter. A 14 foot birdie drops on 13. On 14 the putt is more like 20+ feet. Back to back birdies are followed by a great 3 iron on 15 to inside a dozen feet. The putt is well struck, but slightly too firm to take the break - it lips out and he settles for par. The final 3 holes are pars. and Kelmay stays toward the top of the leaderboard.
<b>Scores 31: 33 (-6)</b>
<b>Ron Juckett - (+6)</b>
Juckett's bad front 9 - immediately carried over to the back. A short drive, bad approach bogey on 10 put him 7 over. He does sink a 33 foot putt on 11 for birdie. On 15 the iron approach is inside 11 feet, but he misses the birdie putt. The drive at 16 finds a fairway bunker and Ron bogeys. 17 - bogey. 18 <i>At this point Ron is thinking about playing from his knees or hitting lefthanded with the backside of the club</i> - drive is short right. Second shot is also right in the trees just short of the green <i>nearly took out a 40 year old talking on his cell phone - rather than paying attention to the tourney</i>. His first chip hits in the rough short of the green and then doesn't release onto the green, leaving him on the fringe almost 50 feet from the hole. The next chip is pretty good, but the 9 foot putt for bogey slips by the hole on the high side and he doubles. He leaves the course, goes to the bar, orders a drink and gets on the internet looking for the best route to Augusta. <i>Hint: just hop on I-20 and head East. If you get to South Carolina you've gone too far.</i>.
<b>Scores 41: 38 (+9)</b>
<b>Jeff Nights - (-1)</b>
On 11 his drive isn't long, but it's long enough and well positioned enough to give him a shot at the pin. The approach is decent, and the putt is made from 10+ for birdie. The drive on 12 misses the fairway, forcing Nights to layup rather than try for the green in two.The 3rd shot approach spins back off the green. The pitch shot runs up inside 6 feet, but Nights blows the par putt. The approach at 15 is long and in a trickly location. He can't get up and down. On 17 he hits the green, but his first putt isn't real good - he leaves himself a 7 foot par putt with at least a 4 inch break. He makes it for the save. . He comes up clutch on 18 - managing a par, when it didn't appear he would get one off the tee.
<b>Scores 34: 36 (E)</b>
<b>Kyle Kappe III - (-4)</B>
Another of the short hitters who thrived on the front 9. Kappe's back start out with a couple of pars. He plays to his strength on 12 and doesn't get sucked into going for the green in two. He's rewarded with a birdie. He also birdies the relatively short 13th. 14 and 15 are both bogeyed. 14's drive is short and the 3 iron on 15 misses the green and he can't get up and down. The drive on 16 is short, but he manages to scratch out a par. The 26 foot birdie putt on 17 does a 360 then drops.
<b>Scores 31: 34 (-5)</b>
<b>David Gonzalez - (-3)</b>
Gonzo destroys the drive on 10 - setting up a half wedge into the green - which stops inside 2 feet. The next 3 are pars. <i>(in case your wondering the drive on 12 is 345 but it's in the fringe - so it doesn't count)</i> The drive at 14 gives him a shot at the pin, but the 9 iron approach is pushed and he only pars. Number 16 is a big drive - 320+ and he birdies when the 14 foot putt rattled home. The iron approach on 17 is in the water. He drops and sinks the 7 foot putt for bogey.
<b>Scores 32: 34 (-4)

<b>Duncan Baxter - (+2)</B>
Duncan played 2 over on the front, but really had to struggle to do that. In fact, he never had a legitimate run at a birdie. That adds a ton of pressure when your pressing to make pars. Baxter finds a bunker on 10 - bogey. Short drives on 12 and 13 force Duncan to again scramble for par. It takes a 20+ foot putt to save par at 15. On 17 he misses the green and bogeys. On 18 the drive is short - rather than risk getting wet, he lays up short and right - chips on, but 2 putts for another bogey.
<b>Scores 37: 39 (+6)</b>
<b>Kyle Smith - (-1)</b>
Smith sinks a 16 foot par putt on 10. A great 3rd shot iron on 12 sets up birdie. 3 putt bogey on 14. Short drive on 16 forces him to scrape out a par. A great iron on 17 gives him a run at birdie from inside 10 feet, but like many others on this day - he misses. On 18 he doesn't get on the green in two but does get up and down for par.
<b>Scores 34: 35 (-1)</b>
<b>Kevin Wayne - (E)</b>
Wayne starts off the back 9 with a big drive on 10, but he can't convert it into birdie. Number 11 - big drive again - but no birdie. Number 12 - big drive - reaches the green in two and two putts for birdie. On 18 he hits yet another big drive, but he pushes the approach right and 2 putts for par.
<b>Scores 35: 34 (-1)</b>
<B>Bradley Nowell - (-3)</b>
3 under making the turn - with all 3 birds coming on the last 3 holes. It takes a clutch pitch from the short side rough to save par on 10. Number 11 - starts with a drive in the trees and finishes with his first bogey of the tourney. Another bad drive at 12 leads to a second bogey. 3 putts on 15 is his 3rd bogey. He rebounds with his putter - sinking a 24 footer for birdie at 16. A great iron on 18 gives him a rare run at birdie on this tough hole, but the 12 footer comes up about 2 inches short.
<b>Scores 32: 36 (-2)</b>
<b>Stan Gunner - (-1)</b>
Birdie at 13 is followed by a big 20 foot par putt dropping. Another 20+ foot putt drops on 15 for birdie. on 18 he hits a clutch iron off of the mogles to the right of the fairway - on the green and two putts for par. The second shot iron from that lie was extremely difficult - <i>Ask Babson</i>.
<b>Scores 34 : 33 (-3)</b>
<b>Colton Mayes - (-5)</b>
An amazing 30 on the front puts Mayes at the top of the leaderboard, and gives him a great shot at being the first two time winner on tour. The back 9 starts where the front left off. A birdie putt drops from 23 feet. 11 is pared, 12 is birdied - playing a wedge 3rd shot to inside 6 feet. 13 another birdie Mayes is really playing well right now - <i>mild understatement</i> He pars out to close the back with a 32.

*Fad Braxton's Big Adventure*
After Fad's opening 68, he sat down in a local Atlanta club with his new fan club, the most prominent of which are Jughandle, the leader of the motorcycle gang, and Destiny, the buxom blond stripper.
As they drank (heavily) in celebration of Fad's big round, some details from the other night began to emerge.
It seems that at the bar, Fad began the night by aggressively ordering double whiskeys, and belligerently demanding that all in the bar worship him as the world's greatest Puttmaster.
Sure enough, after awhile, Braxton feels a tap on his shoulder. He turns around, and stares directly into the chest of the largest, most imposing man he has ever seen. The man says, "I represent Boyle Drunson, the world's greatest propositional putter. He has heard your claims of putting greatness, and wishes to challenge you to a putting duel in the parking lot."
Fad, his very status as Puttmaster threatened, agrees to the challenge, and heads outside. There, he sees a heavyset, debonair fellow dressed in a white-jacketed suit, surrounded by a small army of cronies.
"I am Boyle Drunson," the heavyset figure declared, "and I am the world's greatest propositional putter -- that title you so crudely refer to as 'Puttmaster'. Because I wish to teach you your correct place in the order of things, I would like to declare a proposition. We putt from here," he said, pointing down at the gravelly parking lot, "around those motorcycles, and into the storm pipe on the far side of the parking lot. Do you accept?"
"What is the wager?" Braxton asks.
"The wager," said Drunson, "will be a request. That is to say, the winner will get to make one request of the loser, and the loser must accept."
Braxton quickly accepted.
Then, as Drunson's cronies began to crowd around in anticipation of the challenge, a small group of scruffy-looking fellows began to converge near the motorcycles...

<B>AJ Tucker - (E)</b>
A well positioned drive on 11 allows him to fire at the pin - he then sinks the 11 foot birdie putt. The par 5 - 12th is birdied by hitting a great 3rd shot approach. The short par 4 13th is also a birdie. Things then settle down until 18. Here he misses the green with the approach and he can't get up and down.
<b>Scores 35: 33 (-2)</b>
<b>TE Almighty - (-2)</b>
Pars 6 of the first 7 holes on the back. A short drive on 12 forced a layup and he 2 putted. A clutch 2nd shot was needed at 14 to save par. On 15 he misses the green from the tee with a 3 iron and can't get up and down. The 5 iron off the tee on 17 stops 4 feet from the pin - birdie. The drive at 18 is down the middle but he still has a 4 wood into the green. He hits the green but is left with a 30+ foot putt...which falls. The first birdie on 18 for the day. A nice finish from one of the most consistent players on tour.
<b>Scores 33: 34 - (-3)</b>
<b>Shane Kormelink - (-2)</b>
Drive in the rough on 10 - forces him to use his scrambling ability to get par. 11 he hits a nice drive and converts it into a birdie. Number 12 is another scramble situation, but this wizard with shot making scapes out another par. The short 13th is birdied. The 5 iron off the 17th tee is shortsided with the green sloping away. Despite the fact Kormelink is a great shot creater - ironically he isn't particularly good in chip shot situations. He ends up with a bogey here.
<b>Scores 33: 34 (-3)</B>
<B>Kevin Boroniec - (-2)</b>
On 10 Kevin's approach to the green is pulled and misses the green. The long chip is good, but it runs the ridge line on the green and stops over 10 feet away. He misses the par putt. On 11 he hits a poor drive and being the course manager that he is - elects to layup and play for par - rather than risk a high number trying to create a miraculous shot. It works as he pulls off a great chip and sinks the 13 foot par putt. On 12, his course management skill again crop up. His drive is good, but he elects to play to the green in regulation. It works - the 3rd shot approach is only 18 inches from the cup. He birdies 16 but a short drive on 18 forces him to play to the right edge of the green with a 2 iron to aviod the water. He misses the green and can't get up and down.
<b>Scores 33: 35 (-2)</b>
<b>Marshall Herd - (-3)</b>
Herd's putter was magnificent on the front. On the back he misses a birdie putt of 14 feet on 11. That's it - everything else is solid pars. No runs at birdie no threats of bogey.
<b>Scores 32: 35 (-3)</b>
<b>Jimmy Fuijita - (E)</B>
The back nine starts out with a sand save par. The next 4 are all pars. Then this streaky golfer hits a real bad run. Double, Double and up and down par save and a Bogey caused by a terrible iron approach. 5 over on the last 4 holes puts Jimmy in a situation where he'll have to play real well tomorrow to make the cut.
<b>Scores 35: 40 (+5)</b>
<b>Rolin Bywater - (+2)</b>
Bywater's back 9 starts off about as bad as the front 9. To start the tourney Bywater went bogey, bogey, bogey - to start the back 9 he only bogeys two in a row. He then responds with a birdie on 12. A terrible drive on 14 leads to bogey. A putt droping from 20 feet gives him birdie at 16. But that stroke is given back on 18.

The Gold Club? Where did you go first, because they slipped something into your Martini. The Gold Club is closed - you know there was that little problem with prostitution, drugs, and tax evasion.
I'm sure there are numerous other strip clubs in the town with Gold in the name <i>(and they probably have prostitution, drugs and evade taxes as well)</i> - maybe it was one of those. :D
If not - you were way beyond Bloody Marys. Plus the waitresses at the bar that now uses that facility probably didn't like you constantly asking for lap dances. ;)

<b>The Bell South Classic - 2nd Round Preview</b>
Despite the fact the Atlanta Athletic Club is playing extremely long, some of the tours shorter hitters are performing extremely well, including the new cult favorite Fad Braxton. In fact, short hitters like Kappe and Kelmay appear to have positioned themselves to make the cut without much effort.
The current cut line is 2 under par, and I would be surprised if it went any lower. In fact, I expect a score of 67 (3 under) to be extremely good in round 2.
I would break up the players into 3 groups going into today's round:
<b><i>Those Who Should Make the Cut</b></i>
Mayes
Kelmay
Nielsen
Kappe III
Gonzalez
<b><i>Those Looking Forward to Extra Practice at Augusta</b></i>
Juckett (who almost left after round 1)
Fuijita
Silvers
Bywater
Baxter
Tokunaga
<b><i>And the Rest</b></i>
of which there are 14 players fighting it out for approximately 6 slots on the weekend lineup.

<b>The Bell South Classic - Round 2</b>
<b>Those Ready to head to Augusta</b>
<b>Ron Juckett - (+9)</b>
Ron seriously considered getting a head start on practice at Augusta, but luckily he went out and got so drunk he couldn't drive. When he woke up, still a little drunk and realized he hadn't missed his teeoff time - he showed up <i>(dressed in exactly the same outfit he had on during Thursday's round - just a lot more wrinkled)</i>. Juckett's round started off looking like he was still drunk <i>(surprise, surprise)</i>. Bogey, Double. A big drive on 5 set up a birdie, but he fails to hit the green with his iron off the tee on 7 or the approach shot on 8 and he can't get up and down on either hole.
<B>Front 9 Score 39 : (+13)</B>
<b>Duncan Baxter - (+6)</b>
Baxter gets up and down on 2 to save par. He pars 3 despite a drive of only about 235 yards. Number4 is doubled. 5 is a birdie thanks to sinking a 26 foot putt. The last 4 are pars.
<b>Front 9 Score 36 : (+7)</B>
<B>Jimmy Fuijita - (+5)</b>
Jimmy beings with a terrible 8 iron approach on 1. He slams his club down in disgust following the shot, but he can't get up and down. He rebounds at 2 with an excellently played birdie, but backslides on 3 into a second bogey. On 5 his drive isn't great, but the tactician in him says to go for it in two. The ball hits short of the green, but runs up onto the dance floor. He sinks misses the 48 foot putt by about 4 inches on the high side, but he makes the 3 foot comebacker for birdie. A great putt from 20 on 7 gives him another birdie. At 9 he throws the stroke back again when he 3 putts from 30 feet. The front side saw Jimmy get 3 pars, 3 birdies, and 3 bogeys - The spectators following Jimmy are complaining of motion sickness.
<b>Front 9 Score 35 : (+5)</B>
<b>Sterling Silvers - (+4)</b>
Silvers' chances of making the cut are slim, but last week a couple of players that needed good rounds to make the cut got them. However, to start out the day Sterling goes Bogey, Bogey. The he has to sink a 12 foot putt to save par. He does settle down and birdie 5, 6, and 8 to get underpar on the front 9.
<b>Front 9 Score 34 : (+3)</b>
<b>Rolin Bywater - (+4)</b>
Despite his aggressive play, Bywater only gets 1 birdie op on the front 9, at 8 he pieces together a well positioned drive, nice iron and sinks a 13 foot putt. Otherwise it's all pars.
<b>Front 9 Score 34 : (+3)</b>
<b>Mike Tokunaga - (+3)</b>
Of the longshots hoping to make the cut Mike probably has the best chance. Obviously he is sitting closer to the cutline by a stroke, but he is also long off the tee and could put himself in a position to putt for birdies. The first 4 holes are all pars. Number 5 starts with a 322 yard drive and a 220 yard 4 wood. Then he sinks a 19 foot eagle putt. He can't get under par on the next two holes. Number 8 he busts another drive 300+, hits a 7 iron within 8 feet then sinks the birdie putt. A well placed drive on 9 puts him in a position to be aggressive. He doesn't quite hit it as well as he would have liked, but when the 24 foot putt found the bottom of the cut - it didn't matter. This front 9 has given Mike's hopes of making the cut a pulse - he'll need to play well on the back 9, but he's definately moved onto the bubble with the other 14 players.

<b>Those Probably Making the Cut</b>
<b>Colton Mayes - (-8)</b>
Already a winner this season, and playing extremely well, Colton's name at the top of the leaderboard can't be a pretty sight for most of the other contenders. Mayes starts by sinking a 22 foot putt for par. The next two are solid pars. Number 4 is 3 putted from 30 feet for bogey. The par putt from 6 - just slips by the hole. However the streaky player quickly rebounds with back to back birdies on 5 and 6. The 2nd shot 8 iron on 6 stopped only 2 feet from the hole. A par saving putt on 8 is the only other thing of interest on the front 9.
<b>Front 9 Score 34 (-9)</b>
<b>Alan Kelmay - (-6)</b>
Kelmay was quite focused in the first round - enabling him to play well on a course that isn't particularly suited to his game. However, Kelmay can hit good irons and he putts well, and while not long off the tee - his length is adequate. Par on 1 is followed by a well played birdie at two and a birdie at 3 facilitated by sinking a 20 foot putt. Par on 4 is followed by a 3rd shot iron approach on 5 within 5 feet for his 3rd birdie in 5 holes. Number 6 he sinks a 27 foot birdie putt and he's 4 under on 6 holes. If he can birdie 2 of the last 3 his front 9 score will be in the 20s. The 4 iron off the tee on 7 stops inside of 10 feet, but Kelmay, typically a great putter cuts across the ball slightly and the tiny bit of sidespin keeps the ball from taking the subtle break. On 9 he positions his drive well, then hits an approach to about 14 feet and sinks the birdie putt. Kelmay is proving you don't have to be long to be successful on a long course - you just have to execute the shots. <i>Can he keep it up for 45 more holes?</i>
<B>Front 9 Score 30 (-11)</b>
<b>Rob Nielsen - (-6)</b>
Nielsen misses the fairway on one, but the drive is long enough he can hit a 7 iron in. The ball stays on the green, but he's left with an almost impossible birdie putt. In fact, the putt runs the breakline and never slides down towards the hole. His par putt is about 9 feet, but it drops and Nielsen breaths a quick sigh of relief. On two Nielsen again misses the fairway <i>(Maybe he should stop the long drive competition.......naaaah!)</i>. He can't recover this time and settles for bogey. Number 3 it's the approach shot that isn't good, but he gets up and down to save par. Nielsen is really having to lean on his scrambling ability right now. On 5, Nielsen settles in and busts a drive 338 yards <i>is it long enough to win the side bet?</i> that drive lets him reach the par 5 in two, and two putts later he has a birdie. Number 7 he birdies with a little finesse. 6 iron on the green, putter from 21 feet. A big drive on 8 gives him a shot at birdie, but the approach is left right and the birdie putts ends up being almost 35 feet - settles for par. On 9 the drive skirts the left side of the fairway - it bounces and rolls down the edge of the first cut - when it runs out of gas it has just enough momentum to trickly onto the fringe. Nielsen has a pretty good lie, but he catches the ball a little chubby and it ends up in a front bunker. He can't get up and down.
<b>Front 9 Score 35 (-6)</b>
<b>Kyle Kappe III - (-5)</b>
Kappe pars 1 and 2, gives himself an aggessive line to the pin on three but he 2 putts from 12 feet. Number 4 the putter works better dropping a putt a little longer than the one at 3 for birdie. The The next two are also birdies. including a drive of almost 300 yards on 6. At 7 he misses the green with his 4 iron but gets up and down. On 8 he can't duplicate the feet, failing to get up and down after missing the green with his 4 iron. Number 9 the drive is real short, he runs the ball up on the green with a second shot, and settles for a 2 putt par from 30+ feet.
<b>Front 9 Score 33 (-7)</b>
<b>David Gonzalez - (-4)</b>
Gonzalez once again starts the round with a huge drive - 330+ - and it sets up birdie. The drive at 2 is equally as impressive and the iron approach is even better. The tap in from inside 3 feet gives him his second birdie in as many holes. On 3 he busts his 3rd straight drive, but he pulls it slightly and when it's in the air that long and off line by a fraction off the club face - it turns into a bunch of yards left by the time it reaches the ground. His second shot from the rough is fat and the ball comes up short of the green. He can't get up and down and settles for a disappointing bogey. Par at 4 is followed by a 343 yard drive on 5 <i>(So much for Nielsen winning the side bet here)</i>. He turns that awesome display of power into a birdie. Droping a putt from 19 feet on the next hole give him another birdie. The 9th hole starts with a nice drive, but the iron approach is pulled and he as really focus in to scratch out a par.

<b>On the bubble - <i>but just need to play solid golf to make the cut</i></b>
<b>Marshall Herd - (-3)</B>
Herd birdies number 2 - fairway, green 1 putt. Big drives on 5 and 6 set up birdie there. A putt sinking from 22 on 7 continues his hot streak. A drive in ideal position to attack the pin on 8 is wasted when he 2 putts from 14 feet.
<b>Front 9 Score 32 (-6)</B>
<B>Shane Kormelink - (-3)</B>
After finishing 5th and 6th in the first couple of Tournaments - Shane is looking to rebound from a disappointing missed cut last week. Currently, he's looking good on making the cut. A par on 1, is followed by a disappointing par on 2. The iron approach here actually bounced only inches from the pin, but the ball backed up to about 11 feet, and the birdie putt was missed. He makes an easy straight up the hill birdie putt from 18 on 3. Pars the next 4 with solid golf. Number 8 the solid golf continues but the birdie putt from 17 falls. On 9 he makes another putt from about 15 feet, but this one saves par.
<b>Front 9 Score 33 (-5)</B>
<b>Stan Gunner - (-3)</B>
The Pebble Beach winner starts off getting up and down at 1 to save par. Routine par on 2. Drive at 3 is long and gives Gunner a chance to hit a short iron into the green and attack the pin, but he can't convert the birdie. After 2 more pars, Gunner begins to heat up. Birdie on 6 - putt made from 25 feet, birdie on 7 - putt from 18 drops, birdie on 8 - fairway, iron within 8 feet, putt drops. Number 9 is a par.
<b>Front 9 Score 32 (-6)</B>
<b>TE Almighty - (-3)</B>
Bogey at 2, caused by a poor drive, puts Almighty dangerously close to the cut line. It takes a couple of holes, but he gets his stroke back on the par 5 - 5th. Then on the final 2 holes of the front, his game begins to take shape. Big drives for Almighty allows him to be more aggressive and both holes result in birdies.
<b>Front 9 Score 33 (-5)</B>

<b>On the bubble - <i>But needs to play real well to get below the line.</b></i>
<b>Michael Weideman - (+2)</b>
Michael had a great round going on Thursday until that 3rd Big Mac and the 2 Supersized fries caught up with him at 16. He comes into this round 2 over, but he was 5 over on the final 3 holes of the round. Michael probably needs to shoot in the mid 60's to make the cut. A birdie at 1 is a nice start. A great iron on 2 gives him another run at birdie, but the putt is left about half a ball short. number 3 he sinks a par putt from 21 feet. A prefectly placed drive on 5 allows him to reach the green in two and two putt for his second birdie. Sinking at 26 foot putt on 7 is his 3rd birdie for the side - a good start if he's going to challenge for a spot on the weekends.
<b>Front 9 Score 32 (-1)</b>
<b>Its Craptacular - (+2)</b>
The man that always seems to skirt on the cut line, it there again. Crappy birdies 2 - fairway, green - sink the 9 foot birdie putt. He gets up and down of 4. Birdies 5 with a 3rd shot approach inside of 6 feet. Back to back solid birds on 8 and 9 and Crappy is in prime position to get one of the few remaining weekend spots.
<b>Front 9 Score 31 (-2)</b>
<b>Jeff Nights - (E)</b>
Par, Par, Par - then birdie, birdie, birdie. Nights is moving up the leaderboard rapidly. He stubs his toe on 8, where a bad drive pushed right, forces him to layup short of the green on the second shot and the up and down isn't executed.

<b>On the Bubble - <i>starting one shot under the cut line</i></b>
<b>Kyle Smith - (-1)</b>
A bogey on 3, caused by a duck hooked drive - isn't a good start when your hoping to make the cut. Birdies 2 by sinking a 23 foot putt and gets back to even par...temporarily. Number 3 is bogeyed - another bad drive is the culprit here. A big par putt falls on 7 from 18 feet. A birdie putt from just over 20 falls on 8 and he closes even par on the front. Given the play of the 3 posted prior to this one - he'll need to play much better on the back or he'll be going to Augusta early.
<B>Front 9 Score 35 (-1)</b>
<b>Kevin Wayne - (-1)</b>
Wayne is one of the best players as far as all around skills go, but he's really struggled to score in the early tournaments. Trying to build on last weeks made cut, Wayne comes into this match with the type of skills to be successful on this course. Wayne starts off with a couple of pars. The 3rd and 4th are bogeyed the 5th is nearly bogeyed when the iron approach misses the green. A 3 putt bogey at 7 is followed by a 4th bogey at 9. This strong player continues to struggle to piece together a good round. His front 9 was so bad - his chances of making the cut are practically gone.
<b>Front 9 Score 39 (+3)</b>
<b>Brian Babson - (-1)</b>
Babson - long off the tee, didn't capitalize yesterday, but he did give himself shots at birdie, something a bunch of golfers couldn't say. On the second hole Babson misses the fairway, the second shot out of the rough catches a flier and is over the back of the green, and he can't get up and down. Nice drive on 3 gives him a shot to get the stroke back, but the iron approach is 15 feet and the putt is of course missed. Par at 4 and a 349 yard drive at 5 leads to a second straight birdie <i>side bet update - 349 tops Gonzo's 343, and Nielsens 338)</i>. The next two are solid pars. 8 is another 330+ yard drive - leading to a 9 iron approach inside 10 feet and a made putt. Number 9's drive is equally as impressive and he coverts his 4 birdie on the front. 3 under means a solid back 9 and Babson can continue his long drive competitions on the weekend.
<b>Front 9 Score 33 (-3)</b>
<b>On the bubble - <i>On the number</i></b>
<b>Kevin Boroniec - (-2)</b>
Kevin is looking to make his second straight cut after a slow start. The iron approach at 2 is inside 6 feet, birdie made. 3 holes later he, like many other golfers, birdies the par 5 - 5th. He saves par on 7 when he drops the 17 foot putt. The drive at 8 positions him to attack the pin - he does - is successful getting the ball on the right area of the green and he makes the 11 foot putt. Number 9 is too much for Kevin who's iron approach is wide right.
<b>Front 9 Score 33 (-4)</b>
<b>Fad Braxton - (-2)</b>
Fad's leaning on his iron approaches and putts seems to be working well - ironically on the course least likely fo be exploited by this type of play. Braxton starts off with 3 pars - not great, but he hasn't thrown away his chance to make the cut with a bad start. The iron approach on 4 cozeys up only 16 inches from the pin - and Braxton isn't going to miss that putt. Two more pars are followed by a 1 putt birdie 7th hole. Number 9 starts with a short drive - only about 233 yards. The iron approach is almost 200 yards to the pin - forcing Braxton to hit a 4 iron. The ball is well struck and it ball finishes moving 6 feet from the pin. The putt wasn't an easy one - a bit of a sidehill run at the cup, but the 4 inch break wasn't a challenge for Fad. The gallary following this man continues to grow and the noise surrounding his birdies is as loud as any roar on the course. 3 under on the front puts Braxton in prime position to make his first cut - <i>(and maybe move up to the front page of the leaderboard?)</i>.
<b>Front 9 Score 32 (-5)</b>
<b>Bradley Nowell - (-2)</b>
Another tough luck golfer - looking to make his first cut. Par, Par, Birdie, Par, Birdie. <i>At this point things are looking quite interesting on whos going to make the cut</i>. 3 putt bobey at 7 hurts and a bad drive in the trees on 8 leads to another bogey. He finishes the front 9 even par, and still has a shot at the cut line, but most of the golfers on the board around him are playing well, and Nowell is going to have to get under par on the back.
<b>Front 9 Score 35 (-2)</b>
<b>AJ Tucker - (-2)</b>
Tucker is a streaky golfer and he starts off his second round on a terrible streak :(. Aweful drive on 1 = bogey. Aweful drive again on 2 = bogey. Number 3 is a 3 putt bogey and he needs to stop the bleeding quickly or consider what to pack for Augusta. Iron approach at 4 - is inside 7 feet - birdie. Huge drive 300 yards on 5 - gets to the green in two and two putts for birdie. Another 300 yard drive on 6 leads to his 3rd staight birdie. 6 holes - no pars but is play par golf. Par is saved at 7 when the 13 foot putt is made. Last 2 holes are solid pars (finally). What a strange front 9. His 3 birdie comeback has kept him in contention to make the cut.

I figured as much, but I was using your information as a way to bring up the idea of spliting styles of play by 9s in majors.
That would be fine by me (not that it makes a positive difference for me), I would just ask that you either not wait too long for people to send in their styles every nine or have them send you a list ahead of time if they don't check in frequently (for example, agg. if over +1, neutral if -4 to +1, cons. if under -4).

<b>Back 9 - Round 2</b>
<b><i>The Bye Guys - See You Next Week Group</b></i>
<b>Ron Juckett - (+13)</b>
The entire back 9 Ron keeps telling Baxter "I can play faster than you." Apparently wanting to play speed golf. In fact, if not for Baxter in his playing group - Juckett would have probably sprinted through the round so he could get to the bar faster. The back 9 is all over the place. Bad drive on 11, great drive on 12, terrible drive on 13, great drive on 14, can't get up and down after a bad iron on 15, great drive on 16...you got the idea yet. As it turns out he plays the final 9 of his tourney 1 over.
<b>(+14)</b>
<b>Duncan Baxter - (+7)</b>
Baxter plays slow and steady, hoping to find a rhythem that will help him next week. He birdies 12 but bogeys 15. Closes the back nine even par.
<b>(+7)</b>
<b>Jimmy Fuijita - (+5)</b>
Jimmy's back 9 was ugly. Bogeys at 11, 15, 16 and 18. Nice par save at 14. Birdie at 12. Finishes 3 over on the back.
<b>(+8)</b>
<b>Sterling Silvers - (+3)</b>
Good News - no bogeys on the back. Bab News - only 1 birdie, and that's not nearly enough to make the cut. Nice up and down on 14 and a missed birdie putt from inside 12 feet at 13.
<b>(+2)</b>
<b>Rolin Bywater - (+3)</b>
Bywater has a positive to leave Atlanta with. He birdies both 10 and 11 with great putts from outside 13 feet. After a couple of pars he gets up and down to save birdie at 14. Two more holes where putts fall, and Bywater is under par. Another up and down on 17 and he finishes 1 under. A great effort, but it will be just short.
<b>(-1)</b>
<b>Kevin Wayne - (+3)</b>
Sandy bogey at 10. Bogey at 11. Birdie at 12. Bird at 15 bogey at 17. A couple of birdie ops just missed on 16 and 18.

<b><i>Leaders</i></b>
<b>Alan Kelmay - (-11)</b>
Kelmay continues his hot play on the back 9. After shooting a 30 he birdies 10 and 11 - both with great putts (20 feet and 24 feet respectively). Great drives at 12 and 13 give him shots at birdie, but he can't close the deal on either hole. Number 15 is his first bogey of the day, but he gets back on track quickly with a birdie at 16. A short drive pushed right, keeps him from being overly aggressive on 18. He elects to layup and take the water out of play. Then he can't get up and down dropping a stroke.
<b>(-12)</b>
<b>Colton Mayes - (-9)</b>
Mayes, who had the lead coming into todays round went under par on the front, and saw his lead get snatched away by Kelmay. On the back Mayes gets on another of his hot streaks. Birdie, Birdie, Birdie. Saves par with a super 17 foot big breaking putt on 16. Like Kelmay the 18th proves too much and he gives a stroke back. That's a costly bogey, now he'll start round 3 - 1 stroke back.
<b>(-11)</b>
<b>David Gonzalez - (-7)</b>
4 under on the front, but nowhere near that good on the back. A par putt save at 10 is quickly followed by a poor drive, terrible second shot into the water on the right and eventually a double bogey at 11. Missing the fairway on 12 almost cost him his 3rd stroke on the back 9, but the resourceful player is able to make par. At 13 he misses a birdie putt from 12 feet. The battle continues on 15, he misses the green and has to get up and down for par. A big drive on 16 gives him a shot at birdie, but he can't convert. Number 17 he misses the green again, and this time he can't get up and down. A terrible back 9 has really hurt Gonzo's chances at a win, in fact, it has put him uncomfortably close the the cut line.

<b>Kyle Kappe III - (-7)</b>
A couple of pars to start the back. Then a perfectly placed drive on 12, followed by a nice layup, a lazer approach and a putt from 5 feet for birdie. 15 is birdied - nice iron and a good putt from 9 feet. A big drive <i>(well big for Kappe)</i> gives him a birdie shot at 16, but he isn't able to capitalize. At 17 he needs a par putt save from 18. On 18 he hits a short drive in the mogles to the right. But being a scrambler - he creates a shot off the awkward lie that runs to the front of the green. He elects to pitch with his 8 iron so the ball will roll more - and it works beautifully. The ball rolls about 55 feet before stopping 6 feet past the hole. The comeback putt is made for par.
<B>(-9)</b>
<b>Marshall Herd - (-7)</b>
Marshall Herd is trying to duplicate his impressive 31 from the early round. Birdies at 12 and 13 are a good start. A good iron on 15 gives him a shot at birdie, but he misses the 11 foot putt. On 16 he hits his drive through the fairway and it ends up deep in the thick grass. Herd takes a huge cut at his second swing and winces in pain as his body torques through the grass. He's quite sore from the swing and contemplates hanging it up for the tourney, but realizes he's basically made the cut, meaning he'll get some money at the end - so he sticks with it. It's a good thing he's durable. He ends up with a bogey , A good iron on 17 gives him a run at bird from 14, but he just misses. He bogeys again on 18 and finishes even par on the back 9.
<b>(-7)</b>
<b>Rob Nielsen - (-6)</b>
Nielsen's erratic play on the front continues on the back. A 337 yard drive on 10 leads to birdie. A big drive again on 12 gives him a line for eagle, but the iron approach isn't real good and he settles for birdie. 3 putt bogey at 13. A double bogey at 15, he trys a clutch shot from the short side rough and catches the ball part way up - almost skulling it across the green. Birdies 16. Then gets up and down to save par on 17, and can't get up and down to save par on 18.
<b>(-5)</b>
<b>Stan Gunner - (-6)</b>
Big drive leads to birdie on 11. A well placed iron at 12 gives him a line to be aggressive, but he pulls the approach left and ends up settling for par. Birdie at 13. Just misses another on 16 when his birdie putt is left a couple inches short. On 17 he misses the green short side and he can't get up and down. On 18 he plays a steady par.

Dear lord, NO!

Just highly embarrassed after shooting an 81 at the target practice game of the week.

<b><i>Just Below the Cut Line</b></i>
<b>AJ Tucker - (-2)</b>
Tucker starts the back 9 with a solid par at 10. He sinks a tough 12 footer on 11 for par, a good recovery after a bad tee shot. Birdies at 12 and 13 get him to 4 under. The next 4 holes are all solid pars. Number 18, probably the most difficult hole on the course jumps up and bites AJ. He can't scratch out a par and the bogey is quite costly. A birdie would have guaranteed he makes the cut, a par he most likely makes it, a bogey - now it will depend on what other golfers do.
<b>(-3)</b>
<b>Bradley Nowell - (-2)</b>
Nowell, hoping to make his first cut starts with 4 pars on the back. He gets up and down on 14 for par, after he misses the green with an approach from 200 yards. 3 putt bogey at 15 hurts his cut chances, but a quick rebound birdie on 16 puts him right back at 2 under. Par on 17 and the difficult 18th is....bogeyed. That puts Nowell at 1 over on the back and 1 under for the tournament - that's not going to be good enough <i>barring a huge meltdown from other golfers</i>. Nowell will have to hope Augusta is the first cut he makes for the year. <i><b>Sublime - I'm not sure why Nowell has struggled so much. Bad luck on 2 rolls (the 9 and the fact the clutch rolls didn't work) last week cost you. This week it's just been a couple of bad rolls - mostly in building your base score - not the attribute score. I wouldn't be overly concerned. You have a nice set of stats and a real good set of attributes - Nowell will be in the money soon.</b></i>
<b>(-1)</b>
<b>Its Craptacular - (-2)</b>
A poor drive at 10 makes it look like Crappy is going to be scrambling to make par, but instead he hits a clutch 8 iron over the tops of a tree blocking his line and carries it just far enough to clear the bunker. A fortunate bounce causes the ball to roll inside of 10 feet and that one shoot turns a hole that could easily have been bogeyed into a birdie. Another bad drive at 11 is costly - this time he can't rebound and he scores a bogey 5. On 12, one of the easy holes on the back 9 a bad drive forces him to lay up - reach in 3 then he 2 putted for par. Yet another poor drive at 13 leads to his second bogey on the back. He settles in from here - but he can't score - finishing with 5 pars. Crappy's chances of making the cut now, like Nowell are slim and none.
<b>(-1)</b>
<b>Jeff Nights - (-2)</b>
Birdie at 10, big drive at 11, and a 6 iron to the green - 1 putt from 16 feet and he's gone 2 under to start the back 9. A great par saving putt on 12 - is helpful but disappointing. A great drive on 13 gives him a run at pin with approach, but the ball is hit a little fat, and the ball comes up well short of the pin - 2 putt par. Number 16 is a bogey from the short side fringe. Number 18 is - you guessed it bogeyed and Nights who's back 9 started with such a flash - fizzled out to an even par score. He'll have to hold his breath and wait - <i>On a side note - the average play from Crappy, Nowell, and Nights has helped Tucker. Still a bunch of golfer fighting for the last few spots on the weekend, but these are 3 that where tied with Tucker that he no longer has to worry about.</i>
<B>(-2)</b>
<b>Kyle Smith - (-1)</b>
A perfect drive on 10 - sets up an aggressive approach and a birdie putt made from 14 feet. Another birdie at 11 and Smith is sitting at 3 under. Pars 12, gets up and down on 13. A birdie putt at 16 from 28 feet rolls around the edge of the hole and drops after doing a 180. 4 under <i>Tucker you holding your breath - if Smith finishes 4 under - the cut line will slide up to 4 under - with only 6 golfers left to affect it.</i> The 18th hole starts with a good drive. The approach shot is pushed right - most likely a bail out from the lake on the left. Smith chips up, and then the par putt from 16 feet is - just short. He bogeys and finishes 3 under. Currently, that is good enough to make the cut, but there are still 6 golfers to finish.
<b>(-3)</b>
<b>Michael Weideman - (-1)</b>
In round 1 Weideman shoots 33: 39. Again on the front 9 Weideman does well with an impressive 32. Now the back 9. He birdies 10 - good sign. Bogey at 11. Bird again on 12. The next 3 are pars - each appearing more labored than the previous. A poor drive on 16, a bad approach, decent chip but the par putt slips below the hole and he bogeys 16. The tee ball at 17 is well short of the hole and Michael 3 putts for bogey. At 18 the fatigue is once again obvious. A loopy swing on the drive - causes a hook left. The second shot is blocked by trees and even if he elected to try for the green he'd have to hit a ball 235 yards all carry over water. He elects to lay up, chips on and 2 putts for bogey. The final 3 holes prove to be a killer again for Weideman. He finishes 3 over on the last 3 holes and plays them 8 over in two rounds. He finishes 1 over par for the 2 days.
<b>(+1)</b>
<b>Mike Tokunaga - (-1)</b>
Par on 10. Bogey at 11. And a sick result on 12. The par 5 starts with a drive pulled into the deep rough. He hits back to the fairway, but he can't progress down the fairway very far. The 3rd shot to reach the green in regulation is about 130 yards - bad on this very birdieable par 5. The approach shot is pushed right - it hits the bank on the right of the green and rolls down - into the water. A drop - poor chip and 3 putts later Mike has an 8 and his chances of making the cut appear gone <i>Smith and Tucker are actually dancing together in the club house at this point - I'm not sure but I think Tucker was leading, when they weren't stepping on each others feet</i>. Mike bogeys again at 13. Birdies 14 but bogey 15. The rest are pared including a a nice par save at 18.

<b>Kevin Boroniec - (-4)</b>
3 pars to start the back. Birdie at 13. Sinks a 28 foot putt on 6 for birdie. Another long putt on 17 is made for birdie - 3 under on the back heading into 18. A decent drive at 18 is followed by a bad bail out approach. The ball ends up in the trees to the right of the green. He comes up with a clutch punch shot, under the branches over the bunker and gets it to stop on the green. A difficult shot executed perfectly. He sinks the 11 foot par put. He not only made the cut, but his 32 puts him at 7 under and on the first page of the leaderboard.
<b>(-7)</b>
<b>Shane Kormelink - (-5)</b>
Birdie , birdie, birdie, 3 pars then 2 more birdies. Closes with a par. Excellent round of 30 for Kormelink who moves up to 3rd and is only 2 shots out of the lead.
<b>(-10)</b>
<b>Fad Braxton - (-5)</b>
The good play for Fad continues - biordie - again the putter coming up big. A nicely placed drive on 11 allows him to be more aggessive with his iron - he knocks down the pin and easly sinks the 5 foot birdie putt. A par putt save from 26 feet on 12. Up and down after missing the green on 13. Great iron approach at 15 stops 7 feet from the pin - birdie. Sinks a birdie putt from 19 on 16. Sinks a birdie putt from 27 on 17. On 18 he hits a terrible drive. Rather than risk a big number, Fad decided to play the whole like a par 5 - and that's what he scores - a 5. Back 9 of 31 puts him high on the leaderboard as well.
<B>(-9)</b>
<b>TE Almighty - (-5)</b>
One of the most consistent golfers on tour through the early part of the season, TE starts off the back 9 with a par, then a clutch 2nd shot to save par on 11. He bogey's 12 when he tries to reach the green in two and leaves it right - and it splashes in the water. Bogey again at 14 - puts him in a tie with Babson, Smith, and Tucker <i>Rumor has it they were dancing again</i>. TE gets up and down to save par on 15, but he still looks like he's struggling. On 16 he finds a fairway bunker off the tee and scores his 3rd bogey on theback. A birdie at 17 (23 foot putt drops) puts him back at a tie at 3 under. 18 is pivital - a birdie - he's playing Saturday, and Smith and Tucker are still on the bubble with Babson yet to finish, a par - and Smith, Tucker, and Almighty are in with only Babson needing to shoot par to make it, a bogey and TE is out, Smith and Tucker are in, and Babson only needs to shoot par on the back to make the cut. The drive at 18 is short and right - landing on the upslope of one of the mogles. His second shot is difficult because the stance is so awkward he can't transfer his weight well. He hits it high and pulls it left. Of course he know the lie would cause the pull - so he lined up well right of the green and is in no dangers of hitting it into the water. The loft on the shot and the lack of weight transfer caused the ball to come up about 30 yards short of the green. TE is now faced with a difficult 3rd shot. He has to chip the ball about 45 yards and hope the ball is hit soft enough to run along the break line leaving him a makeable putt. <i>Somewhere in the background Lambata music is playing - Tucker and Smith are in unless Almighty sinks this pitch shoot</i>. The chip is well struck, but it checks up too quickly and TE is left with an 18 foot putt to make the cut. His putt is pulled off the club face and races by the hole.
<b>(-2)</b>
<b>Brian Babson - (-3)</b>
Just needs to shoot a 35 to make the cut. Starts the back with a - par, par, misses the fairway on 12 and can't go for the green in two - ends up with a disappointing par on a par 5. He was hoping to create some breathing room on that hole. Misses a birdie putt from 13 on 13. Pars 14. A great iron on 15 gives him a run at birdie from 11 feet - but it trickles by the hole. Pars 16. The 6 iron off the tee on 17 is....pushed. It lands on the edge of the trap to the right of the green. He chips on. The putt is hit through the break and he misses. The tap in bogey is mishit as well, but it slips in the top edge. Babson heads into 18, 1 over on the back, and needing a birdie to make the cut. In 49 rounds of play (every golfer 2 times), the 18th has only been birdied 1 time (and that was TE Almighty on Thursday's round). The tee ball is huge....350+ yards down the right side of the fairway. That leaves him just a 9 iron into the green. He strikes it well, the ball lands inside of 8 feet, bounces once and backs up - stoping 13 feet away. Babson takes a long time lining up the putt. He strikes it firmly again, but this time - he plays a little less break - assuming he'll hit it hard enough to eliminate some of the movement. The thought was a good one as the ball hits the hole dead center cut and drops for birdie. Babson is playing on Saturday.

WOW! What a way to make it. When I saw I needed a birdie on the last hole, I figured I was screwed. Of course, I'm way off the leaders, but at least the side competition is still within reach. How does that Macarena go again?

*Finishing that Braxton story*
So anyways, I was saying to Mabel, I says...
Obviously, the Puttmaster tournament involved some bit of controversy. Boyle Drunson, the world's greatest propositional putter, made a great shot by banking his putt off a motorcycle, which knocked over the kickstand and ruined the bike. This, of course, got the bikers very upset. He tapped in for a two.
Braxton responded by banking HIS putt off of Drunson's stretch Escalade, and making a hole in one. As winner, he won the $10,000 from Drunson. The earlier bet, something vague about a winner's request, was of course just a red herring in my story.
Anyhoo, a fight ensued between the biker gang and Drunson over the motorcycle. Braxton's car was destroyed in the process, along with his golf clubs. But Braxton, known for his generosity, gave Jughead, the man whose chopper was destroyed, $7,000 to get it replaced.
The next morning, Jughandle borrowed a bike and gave Braxton a lift to Atlanta, with their new friends in tow.
Also, Braxton wound up with a tattoo of Destiny the Stripper's name. You decide how that happened.
Braxton used his remaining money to buy new clubs. He hired Jughandle as his caddy. The whole chopper crew followed him around the first two days...

"I just have to say, I want to thank everyone who followed me around the course today... your support really made the difference...
"I also have to thank Jughandle, my caddy, for getting me through all this. I literally wouldn't have been here without him."
Loud chuckle from the motley crew of ruffigans and blondes in the back of the tent.
Question: "What's been the difference for you this week, Fad?"
Answer: "Confidence in my putting. I feel okay to hit the ball anywhere on the green and know that I have a shot at making it."
Question: "Where did you find that confidence?"
Answer: "Playing Puttmaster. And also, a little nip of scotch now and then on the back nine."
Question: "A nip of scotch?"
Answer: "Yeah, you know, for the nerves."
Moderator: "Uh....Thank you, Fad. That's quite enough for today. Up next, Kyle Kappe the Third..."

Group 1 - Holes 1 - 3

<B>Kyle Smith - (-3)</b>
Smith starts with a solid par on one, then birdies the much tougher 2 and 3rd holes to go two under for the round.
<b>(-5)</b>
<b>AJ Tucker - (-3)</b>
Tucker pars the first - then follows Smiths lead on the second hole. The drive is within 10 yards of Smith's, and the iron approach is about 2 feet inside of Smiths - giving Tucker a great read on the birdie putt, which he converts. Par at 3.

Group 1 - Holes 4 - 6
</b>
<B>Kyle Smith - (-5)</b>
Smith can't continue the hot start from the first 3 holes - in fact, he gets 3 solid pars, but doesn't have a true run at birdie on any of the 3 holes.
<b>(-5)</b>
<b>AJ Tucker - (-4)</b>
Tucker pars number 4. Birdies 5 by playing smart - reaching the green in 3 shots - the 3rd finishing 8 feet from the pin - and the putt falling. Number 6 however is too much as Tuckers approach misses the green and he can't get up and down.
<b>(-4)</b>
<b>Group 2 - Holes 1 - 3</b>
<B>Brian Babson - (-3)</b>
Babson hits a long - straight drive on number 1 - leaving him a short iron into the green. He captilizes on the position and attacks the pin. The 7 foot birdie putt falls and "the lucky dice" seem to be working early. A good drive on 2 takes an unfortunately bounce and ends up in the rough. The approach shot is well hit, but it bounces hard and "Putting Butcher" is lucky to get the ball down in 2 strokes from almost 40 feet. A huge drive on 3 gives him another shot a birdie, but Brian misses the 13 foot birdie putt and has to settle for par.
<b>(-4)</b>
<b>David Gonzalez - (-4)</b>
Gonzalez mishits the drive on 1 and has to scratch out a par. Number two is a well hit drive, but the iron approach is actually better - stopping only 30 inches from the pni. A good drive on 3 allows David a chance to be aggressive, but his iron approach is hit a little chubby and the ball comes up well short of the pin. He does 2 putt for par.

Group 1 - Holes 7 - 9
</b>
<B>Kyle Smith - (-5)</b>
3 more pars for Smith - again no real run at birdie. He finishes the front 9 shooting a 33.
<b>(-5)</b>
<b>AJ Tucker - (-4)</b>
Pars at 7 and 8 are followed by a nice drive on 9. The 9 iron approach shot is pushed right, but the ball hits a mound to that side of the green and bounces onto the dancefloor. Tucker makes sure the fortunate bounce isn't wasted when he sinks the 15 foot birdie putt to close the front side. Tucker also shoots 33.
<b>(-5)</b>
<b>Group 2 - Holes 4 - 6</b>
<B>Brian Babson - (-4)</b>
Babson tones his game down at bit at 4. The 205 yard par 3 is not only reached with a 7 iron - he has a 4 foot putt pin high for birdie - which he makes in case you were wondering. on the par 5 5th - the drive is 350 yards plus and he has a 7 iron from about 208 to the pin. Having hit a great 7 iron on the previous hole - Babson was very confident with the club and he again knocks down the pin - leaving an 8 foot eagle putt. The putt is actually pushed a little, but it slips in the top edge for a 2 under par hole. On 6 - Babson is extremly pumped up after going 3 under on the last 2 holes. His drive is once again big. The second shot approach is only about 80 yards - Babson takes his lob wedge and nukes it - the ball completely airmails the green <i>probably adrenalin</i>. He's left with a difficult down hill chip, which he hits short of the green, allows the rough to take the speed off the shot and the ball to trickle down to the hole. He makes the 7 foot par putt.
<b>(-7)</b>
<b>David Gonzalez - (-5)</b>
Gonzalez misses the green on 4, when he pulls the ball left, but he is able to hit a nice chip over a bunker and keep the ball around the green. He sinks the 9 foot par putt. Length is a major plus again on 5 - the drive isn't as far as Babson, but it does allow him to reach the green in two. David 2 putts for birdie. On 6 Gonzalez muscles up on his drive - tired of losing to Babson in the long drive competitions - he outdistances Babson here, but he pulls the ball into the left rough. His second shot hits the green bounces hard and rolls through the green. Like his playing partner - Gonzalez is able to get up and down and save par.
<b>(-6)</b>
<b>Group 2 - Holes 1 - 3</b>
<B>Rob Nielsen - (-5)</b>
3 unspectacular pars - and no impressively long drives.
<b>(-5)</b>
<b>Stan Gunner - (-7)</b>
Par at 1. A great iron approach on number two from 130 yards knocks down the pin then spins to 7 feet. The putt is well struck, but lips out and Gunner settles for par. On 4, Gunner hits a bad drive. He's way left and has a awkward lie in thick grass. This resouceful golfer comes up with a big shot, then he 2 putts from 44 feet for a clutch par.
<b>(-7)</b>
<b>Marshall Herd - (-7)</b>
He starts with a good drive, but he pushes the 7 iron approach and misses the green to the right. He hits a great long pitch shot that rolls inside of 10 feet and he sinks the par putt. Number 2 the drive is pretty good - no where near Babson or Gonzo, but nice. The approach shot is still 200 yards - but the 6 iron is pured and the ball finishes inside of 5 feet - birdie. Number 3 he's left once again with almost a 200 yard approach. The 6 iron is again struck well, but the ball spins back away from the hole and appears to run right along the break line. When Herd surveys the putt he realizes he's faced with a tough decision. The ball is on the break line - leaving him with 2 options. 1 hit the ball soft, it probably won't fall, but he should be able to two putt or be aggressive try to make it, but if he misses the ball will probably roll a good 12 feet by the hole and he'd still be faced with a big break coming back. After much deliberation and discussion with his caddy, Herd elects to try and make the putt. He strikes the ball square and it rolls quickly towards the hole. The ball begins to take the break to the right, but it holds it's head just long enough to hit the hole and fall. The clutch putt gives Herd his second birdie early.

Group 1 - Holes 10 - 12
</b>
<B>Kyle Smith - (-5)</b>
A great iron on 10 from 170 gives him a shot to break the streak of 6 straight pars, but the 8 foot putt is missed. Solid par on 11. On 12 the drive is short, forcing him to layup rather than go for the green in two. His 3rd shot into the green isn't close to the pin, and he's happy to two putt the green and take his 9th straight par for the round.
<b>(-5)</b>
<b>AJ Tucker - (-5)</b>
A great iron at 11 finsihes inside of Smiths, and Tucker makes his putt for birdie. Par at 11. 12 starts with a good drive, Lays up on the 2nd shot, the 3rd shot 9 iron is inside of 4 feet - putt is made for birdie.
<b>(-7)</b>
<b>Group 2 - Holes 7 - 9</b>
<B>Brian Babson - (-7)</b>
Number 7 is a poor iron leaving 27 foot birdie putt - which HE MAKES - OH MY GOD - the crowd errupts with applause <i>and some laughter</i>. Drive at 8 misses the fairway, and he's lucky to walk away with a par. Par at 9 and he finishes the front 9 - 5 under par 30.
<b>(-8)</b>
<b>David Gonzalez - (-6)</b>
Par at 7 when he two putts from 18 feet. Big drive at 8, but the approach lands almost 25 feet from the pin, and he two putts. Another big drive on 9 - in the middle of the fairway allows David to be aggressive. The wedge in - finishes 8 feet from the cup and the birdie is made.
<b>(-7)</b>
<b>Group 3 - Holes 4 - 6</b>
<B>Rob Nielsen - (-5)</b>
6 iron off the tee on 4 settles in 7 and a half feet from the cup - putt made and Nielsen has his first birdie of the day. The next holes is also birdied -last on is a par.
<b>(-7)</b>
<b>Stan Gunner - (-7)</b>
Gunner's bogey at 4 is quickly followed by Big drives on 5 and 6 allow Stan to attack the pin. At 4 he nearly reaches the green in two - chips straight up the hill running the ball by the cup and nearly chipping in for Eagle, The comeback birdie putt drops. On 6 the birdie putt is only 6 feet and it goes.
<b>(-8)</b>
<b>Marshall Herd - (-9)</b>
A great 5 iron on 4 leads to birdie at the par 3. Par on 5 and the drive at 6 - it finds a fairway bunker and eventually leads to bogey.
<b>(-9)</b>
<b>Group 4 - Holes 1 - 3</b>
<B>Kevin Boroniec - (-8)</b>
Birds the 1st hole of the round - next 2 are pars.
<b>(-9)</b>
<b>Fad Braxton - (-9)</b>
Iron approach from 210 eats up the stick and finishes about 10 feet from the hole - extremely good with such a long iron in. He sinks the putt and adds another birdie to his impressive run this week. On 3 he hits a bad drive, tries a clutch punch shot under some trees, but the ball clips a branch and kicks straight down. His lack of length hurts him, and his red-hot putter can't save him. He settles for bogey.
<b>(-9)</b>
<b>Kyle Kappe III - (-9)</b>
The drive at 2 misses the fairway. The second shot is in the deep grass around the bunker, but not in the bunker. Give the awful play of FOFC tour members when it comes to bunker shots - this will sound odd, but he would have been better off in the sand. Kappe is forced to stand in the bunker, choak up on the club below the grip and hit a ball that is about at waist level. The shot is pretty well struck given the situation, but he's forced to sink a 31 foot putt for par - he misses and has to make a 9 footer coming back to save bogey - this is accomplishes. With a big sigh - he moves onl to the 3rd hole (which he pars.)

Group 1 - Holes 13 - 15
</b>
<B>Kyle Smith - (-5)</b>
Still can't get any birdies - in fact, it gets worse - he misses the green off the tee on the par 3 15th and can't get up and down from the short side.
<b>(-4)</b>
<b>AJ Tucker - (-7)</b>
Solid pars on 13 and 14. At 15 he hits the green, <i>barely</i>. He has to two putt up hill from 48 feet and to add insult to injury the break will exceed 6 feet. His putt is hit hard, but it rolls through Tuckers projected break line and ends up staying well above the hole. In fact, his par putt is 14 feet way. He hits the second putt - and it was has perfect speed. It rolls true and drops home for a big par.
<b>(-7)</b>
<b>Group 2 - Holes 10 - 12</b>
<B>Brian Babson - (-8)</b>
Nothing spectacular. On the par 5 12, he doesn't quite reach it two - well he had the length, but he missed to the left (avoiding the water). He chips up and two putts for par.
<b>(-8)</b>
<b>David Gonzalez - (-7)</b>
Pars at 10 and 11. On 12 he elects to go for the green in two, but leaves the ball right and it splashes in the water <i>now you know why Babson went left - seeing Gonzo in the pond had an affect</i>. Gonzalez drops and chips up to about 14 feet. The putt is made for an absolutely Clutch par.
<b>(-7)</b>
<b>Group 3 - Holes 7 - 9</b>
<B>Rob Nielsen - (-7)</b>
<b>(-7)</b>
<b>Stan Gunner - (-8)</b>
3 uneventful pars. Gunner is 1 under on the front 9.
<b>(-10)</b>
<b>Marshall Herd - (-8)</b>
3 uneventful pars. - <i>No I didn't forget to update Herd</i> The 3 big birdies early help though he shoots 33 for the front 9.
<b>(-9)</b>
<b>Group 4 - Holes 4 - 6</b>
<B>Kevin Boroniec - (-9)</b>
Pars 4, Par 5 - dispite a nice drive, and sinks a putt closer to 30 feet than 20 for birdie on 6.
<b>(-10)</b>
<b>Fad Braxton - (-9)</b>
Braxton - irons and putter philosophy continues to pay off. The tee ball on the par 3 - 4th stops inside of 10 feet and that was a nothing putt for Braxton. Are you kidding me? Unarguably the shortest player on tour hits an almost 300 yard drive on number 6. The 8 iron eats up the stick and the 9 foot putt goes for his 3rd bird in the first 6 holes. <i><b>Is he possibly tied for the lead?</b></i>
<b>(-11)</b>
<b>Kyle Kappe III - (-8)</b>
3 boring pars.
<b>(-8)</b>
<b>Leaders - Holes 1 - 3</b>
<B>Shane Kormelink - (-10)</b>
On the first hole - things start out nicely for Shane. He sinks a 33 foot birdie putt.
<b>(-11)</b>
<b>Colton Mayes - (-11)</b>
After seeing how well he's been playing, and seeing his name in a prime position on the leaderboard, many experts predicted that Mayes would find a way to win this thing. However, Mayes 3rd round started out on a bad streak. Bogey at 1 followed by another bogey at 2 and it it wasn't for an excellent putt from 18 feet falling at 3 - he would have started with 3 straight bogeys.
<b>(-9)</b>
<b>Alan Kelmay - (-12)</b>
Par, Par, - short drive - followed by a long iron that misses the green, a good chip and 2 putt bogey.

<b>
Group 1 - Holes 16 - 18
</b>
<B>Kyle Smith - (-4)</b>
Smith comes off his bogey on 15 with a strong par on 16. A great putt from 23 feet gives him birdie on 17. On 18 the drive is short, he hits his second shot to the right side and just misses the green, the long chip checks up a little early, but he sinks the 16 foot par putt and finishes the back 9 with an even par 35, and he shoots 2 under for the day.
<b>(-5)</b>
<b>AJ Tucker - (-7)</b>
With things bunching up on the leaderboard, Tucker was hoping to at least get to 8 under. A big drive on 16 gives him a run at it, but he missed the 17 foot birdie putt and settles for par. On 17 the iron approach is over 25 feet away and he again settles for a 2 putt. The drive on 18 misses the fairway - and he elects to be smart and not risk a high number. He plays to the right side of the green, the ball rolls through to the frogs hair and he decides to putt. Then he sinks the 7 foot par attempt. He finishes 7 under and 4 under for the day.
<b>(-7)</b>
<b>Group 2 - Holes 13 - 15</b>
<B>Brian Babson - (-8)</b>
Continues to play solid, but can't get close enough to make a run at birdie. <i>of course a 5 footer is never a gimmie with Brian</i> 3 pars.
<b>(-8)</b>
<b>David Gonzalez - (-7)</b>
David's 3 over on the back 9 in round 2 really dropped him down the leaderboard. He was determined not to let that happen today. After 3 pars to start the back 9, Gonzo blitzes a drive on 13, has just a half wedge left, puts the ball inside of 5 feet and sinks the birdie putt. On 14 he misses the green with a 7 iron, but manages to save par with a nice flop shot. Par on 15.
<b>(-8)</b>
<b>Group 3 - Holes 10 - 12</b>
<B>Rob Nielsen - (-7)</b>
Bogey at 10 - 3 putts from 30 feet. A great putt from 16 feet on 11 gives him his stroke back. Par 12 - missed fairway with the drive and that forced him to play to the green in 3 - then he two putts from 24 feet.
<b>(-7)</b>
<b>Stan Gunner - (-8)</b>
Huge drive at 10, a 9 iron then falls only 5 feet from the hole - birdie is made and Gunner gets to 9 under par. On 11, he hits a poor drive, misses the green with the approach and chips up. The par putt is a 20 foot with a 5+ foot break. Gunners' caddy tells him the line, Gunners buys in and sinks the putt to save par.
<b>(-9)</b>
<b>Marshall Herd - (-9)</b>
Pars 10. A great iron inside of 10 feet on 11 gives him a run at birdie, but he misses the putt. On 12 the iron approach is again good - this time inside a dozen feet. The putt falls for birdie.
<b>(-10)</b>
<b>Group 4 - Holes 7 - 9</b>
<B>Kevin Boroniec - (-10)</b>
Par, Par, and can't scamble for a par on 9. Shoots 34 on the front.
<b>(-9)</b>
<b>Fad Braxton - (-11)</b>
Iron on 7 lands almost 20 feet from the cup. Yawn - that's a nothing putt for this <b><i>"Puttmaster"</i></b> - Birdie. Par - 8, Par- 9. Another impressive 9 - this one played in 32 strokes.
<b>(-12)</b>
<b>Kyle Kappe III - (-8)</b>
3 boring pars - same song - different holes. 1 over on the front <i>Sorry - got in a hurry and missed the bogey at 2</i>
<b>(-8)</b>
<b>Leaders - Holes 4 - 6</b>
<B>Shane Kormelink - (-11)</b>
3 steady pars - not a chance of going over par. Only 1 run at birdie on 5 from 14 feet, but the putt was a little short.
<b>(-11)</b>
<b>Colton Mayes - (-9)</b>
Mayes' bad start continues at 4. He 3 putts from 31 feet for bogey. A good drive on 5 allows him the opportunity to go for the green in two - which he decides to do - because he's hoping to stop the slide. The ball comes up on the front edge of the green in the short cut. He decides to putt through the 6 inches of the fringe. The ball is well struck and rolls true - tracking the line all the way to the bottom of the cup - EAGLE. That will stop a bad run quickly. Par at 6.
<b>(-10)</b>
<b>Alan Kelmay - (-11)</b>
Kelmay, who's no longer in sole possession of the lead - bogeys 4. Scores a disappointing par on the birdie hole 5th, and is a wizard with a wedge on 6 to save par.

<B>Brian Babson - (-8)</b>
Babson pars 16, 2 putts from 25 feet on 17, on 18 he hits a big drive, but it trickles out of the fairway. The second shot is right of the green. Chip up and 2 putt from 18 feet for bogey..
<b>(-7)</b>
<b>David Gonzalez - (-8)</b>
Huge drive on 16 - 341 yards - good iron approach giving him a run at birdie from 15 feet - which he converts. On 17 he nearly gives the stroke back when he misses the green, but some nifty wedge work saves par. Par at 18.

See Shane Kormelink. Amazingly enough - Mayes follows suit - to the tune of hitting an approach inside of 10 feet at 9 and making the putt. Even Par on the front.

<b>Alan Kelmay - (-10)</b>

<b>Group 3 - Holes 16 - 18</b>
<B>Rob Nielsen - (-6)</b>
Easy pars at 16 and 17 are followed by a good drive on 18, then a pulled 2nd shot. It appears the ball is going to end up in the lake, but it hits on the bank and kicks up about 4 feet from the fringe. Rob gets up and down to save par.
<b>(-6)</b>
<b>Stan Gunner - (-5)</b>
After back to back double bogeys, Gunners gone from just outside of the lead to the bottom of the leaderboard. This happening would crush a player with less focus, but Gunners' iron will comes shining through. Birdie at 17 thanks to a 22 foot putt, and birdie at 17 thanks to a 9 footer with a 4 foot break slipping in top side. A big drive on 18 appeared to give him a shot at his 3rd straight birdie, but the approach was pushed to aviod the water and he two putts for par.

<b>Group 4 - Holes 16 - 18</b>
<B>Kevin Boroniec - (-8)</b>
Bogey at 16 caused by a bad sand shot. A great iron at 17 gives him a shot to get his stroke back. The putt is hit firm - in fact, too firm as it runs through the break and Kevin settles for par. Kevin's drive at 18 isn't very good, but looking at the leaderboard, he knows a birdie still gives him a shot tomorrow. He elects to go at the pin. The ball is well hit, but begins to draw. As it moves left it brings the water into play. The ball bounces on the left edge of the green, bounces off the green and rolls down the hill into the water. He drops and then takes 3 additional strokes to finish the hole - Double. Kevin finishes with a 39 and shoots 3 over on the day.
<b>(-5)</b>
<b>Fad Braxton - (-12)</b>
Braxton thus far in this tournament has survived dispite his lack of length off the tee - thanks to a hot putter and well hit long irons and fairway woods. On 16 again he hits a short drive. His 2nd shot 4 iron misses the green and he can't get up and down - Bogey. On 17 he gets on the green, then 1 putts from almost 30 feet. On 18 His drive is again short, he elects to hit up to the front right and try to get up and down. He hits a good chip, but misses the 13 foot par putt. Even on the back 9 gives Fad a 68 for round 3.
<b>(-11)</b>
<b>Kyle Kappe III - (-7)</b>
A great putt on 16 drops from 20 for birdie. Another great putt on 17 saves par - this time from 11 feet. On 18 the drive isn't real good, and it takes a clutch second shot from the mogels on the right of the fairway and another clutch shot from the front fringe to save par. Kappe is even on the back and 1 over for the round.
<b>(-8)</b>
<b>Leaders - Holes 13 - 15</b>
<B>Shane Kormelink - (-13)</b>
The leader 3 putts the 13th green. A great iron on 14 stops inside 11 feet, but Shane misreads the big breaking putt and settles for par. Par at 15.
<b>(-12)</b>
<b>Colton Mayes - (-11)</b>
3 pars including a tough up and down on 15.
<b>(-11)</b>
<b>Alan Kelmay - (-12)</b>
A 17 foot putt falls on 14 to save par. The other two are solid pars.

<b>Leaders - Holes 16 - 18</b>
<B>Shane Kormelink - (-12)</b>
16 is a good drive in the fairway, shot to the middle of the green and 2 putts from 28 feet for par. 17 iron on - 2 putts from 22 feet. 18 is a drive in the middle of the fairway - ball reaches the front right of the green, but it's a long way from the pin. The lag putt from 44 feet is well hit and he leaves himself only a 2 and half foot par putt. Closes with a 30 on the back and a round of 68.
<b>(-12)</b>
<b>Colton Mayes - (-11)</b>
A drive of about 325 on 16 sets up an aggressive approach, which is well executed. The putt from about 10 feet fall for birdie and Mayes moves into a tie for first. Par at 17. On 18 he hit another good drive. The second shot 5 iron is pulled - Mayes beings to hold his breath and lean to the right, but it's no use - the ball doesn't even touch land splashing a good 4 feet from the bank. He drops, hits a great chip and nearly makes the bogey putt from 17 feet. Double to close hurts - especially when he was tied for first, but he's still in striking distance with another round to go.
<b>(-10)</b>
<b>Alan Kelmay - (-12)</b>
Par at 16. Par at 17. Big drive on 18 allows him to think about a birdie, but the second shot lands a good 37 feet away - and he's happy when he two putts from there.

The leaderboard is very tight and anything can happen heading into this final round. All but 3 golfers are within 5 strokes of the lead, and that's important, because the closer attribute will come into play. The table above indicates where players have been successful - and also illustrates how important the first 3 holes are, with two playing above par. It also lets you know, you don't want to head into 18 needing a birdie - since the hole is playing closer to a par 5 than a par 4. Pin placements are going to be much tougher in this round - so I doubt well see anyone much below 68 - if someone goes lower than that, they will probably win. I expect even par to be a pretty good score and wouldn't be surprised to see half the field above par with a couple high numbers.

<b>The Atlanta Journal & Constitution
Golfing Great Breaks Down the Field</b>
by Hack Jobbs
<b>Atlanta - GA</b> - Following an exciting day of leaderboard jockeying at the Bell South Classic, I entered the bar and began to contemplate this article. I though about writing another piece on the improbable run of Fad Braxton – and that blond – um…fan <i>(actually I thought about writing just about that blond fan, and her leather brazier she was sporting tonight…yum)</i>.
Ah…where was I – oh yeah.
I though about a piece on the amazing fact that on this LONG course all 3 leaders are all below average in distance off the tee. In fact, there are weekend golfers that hit the ball as far as these guys. I just don’t happen to be one of them.
I though about writing an article saying watch out for Mayes or Gonzalez, or maybe one on Babson and the <i>“if I could only putt”</i> lament.
But while I was contemplating what to do (and continuing to drink – I might add), I got a huge surprise. I mean HUGE. – even bigger than Fad’s blond flashing me <i>(and man I wish that would happen – have you seen the size of those….)</i>
Um…where was I – let’s see, I was drinking and oh yeah…
Ok, so I’m drinking double martinis and guess who sits next to me…
Bobby Jones!!!
Amazing isn’t it! I mean the guys been dead since 1971. But there he was as big as life. He pulled up a stool, slapped me on the back and asked, “What do you think of the field?”
I responded, “Ah, Ah, Um….I see dead people.”
Jones answered, “You’ve been drinking too much. You going to break down the field?”
In my infinite wisdom said, “Ah….”
Jones, “Never mind Kid! I’ll do it for you.”
“Lets start at the bottom.
<b>Kyle Smith</b> The guy has played admirably this weekend….”
“You going to take notes kid, or you just going to sit there and stare at me like you’ve seen a ghost.”
Laughing Jones says, “Man I love that one.”
I obediently pull out my notebook and pencil.
“Smith has played well, but a short hitter, even one like Smith with great irons and putting ability won’t be able to make up that much difference in 1 round so we can write him off.
<b>Kevin Boroniec</b> – the last 3 holes of today’s round killed his chances. If he could have stayed around 7 under, he would have had at least a remote chance of challenging for the trophy, but as it is…he’s just looking for a bigger paycheck.”
<b>Rob Nielsen</b> - This guy kept wanting to challenge Babson and Gonzalez in distance off the tee. I think he lost his ass…
I interrupt, “I don’t think I can say that, and I thought you were supposed to be above foul language.”
Jones, “Shut up and keep writing.”
“Nielsen could move up the board and take home a better check, but he won’t be a factor.
<b>Stan Gunner</b> - Gun is a nice all around player, but I think he’s too far back and not spectacular enough to make up that many shots.
<b>Brian Babson</b> - this guy is dramatic enough to make a charge – If he could just sink a putt that was outside of his shadow.
<B>AJ Tucker</b> - Again too far out to really challenge the leaders – unless of course they back up – which isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
<b>Marshall Herd</b>- two costly bogeys coming down the stretch. At one point yesterday he was 10 under. Those two strokes could prove to be huge – in fact, it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s sitting in your seat tomorrow and I’m having a little chat with him.
<b>Kyle Kappe III</b> - Another of the shorter hitters, but that isn’t what’s going to kill him in the 4th round. It’s his ineffective short game. If he fires at pins, he’s bound to miss greens and then he’ll have to chip from short sides. I don’t like his chances.
<b>David Gonzalez</b> - The posh pick coming in. I still think he can do it, but he’ll not only have to be long off tees, but in fairways as well. He missed to many fairways on the back 9 of the second round and that might prove to be his undoing in the tourney.</b>
<b>Colton Mayes</b> - A guy who already has a victory, a player who’s playing well, I was thinking he would win this thing – then he goes and doubles 18 today. I’m not sure, but I know I wouldn’t beat against him.
<b>Fad Braxton</b> - I haven’t seen a guy this hot putting since, well me at the US Open. Anyway – I don’t think he can keep it up. He’s a bit like Kappe – all irons and putting, his inability to chip will probably cost him 3 strokes tomorrow. Let me be honest for a minute. I’m not sure how he plays with that blond (Jones points in her direction on the other side of the bar) following him around.
“WOW! Did you see that!”
“What?” I asked.
“That blond just flashed….oh never mind. Where was I? Oh yeah”
“<b>Alan Kelmay</b> - Kelmay has been able to stay at the top of the leaderboard for quite a while, and I don’t expect him to make it easy on the players trying to catch him. However, he's never been in this situation before, and I’m not sure he’ll be able to respond in kind if a player makes a run at him. I don’t think he’ll choak, he’s too focused a player for that, but I don’t think he’ll be able to turn it up a notch if he needs another gear.”
“<b>Shane Kormelink</b> - not long off the tee, but this guy has some intangibles. He can scramble out of trouble, he’s resourceful, he manages a course well – and that one is going to be important tomorrow – you don’t want to go throwing away strokes because you make stupid decisions. I also think he’ll handle the pressure better than Kelmay.”
“So who do you think will win?” I ask.
“Hey bud…you can’t put you head down on the bar.” The bartender yells at me. “If you want to lay down – go home.”
“Hey can’t you see I’m talking here, quit interrupting.” I turn to ask Jones my question again, and he’s gone. At that point I decide I better get a taxi and go home.

<b>Kyle Smith - (-5)</b>
Smith start off the final round with 2 steady pars and a tough par putt made from 23 feet.

After the disappointing finish for Kevin in round 3, it was going to be interesting to see how he responded. He starts with a steady par. On 2 he knocks down the pin with his approach iron and sinks the easy 3 foot birdie putt. On 3 the iron approach isn't good, but it does sit on the edge of the green allowing Kevin to putt, which he does and he gets it down in two.

Smith's second set of holes started better than the first 3 holes. A great iron shot was inside 8 feet, but he was still left with a difficult side hill, big breaking putt. He executed the speed and line perfectly and converted the birdie. A short drive at 5 keeps him from going for the green in two - he can't make a charge at birdie here. 6 is also a steady par.

"AJ Tucker with a brilliant putt and it looks like Butcher might be ***INTIMIDATED*** by Tucker's putting prowess."
Ooops I meant base score for round <b>4</b> Not round 3.

<b>Group 1 - Holes 7 - 9</b>
<b>Kyle Smith - (-6)</b>
The last 3 holes on the front 9 are a chore for Smith. He misses the par 3 7th from the tee, and is left with a difficult up and down. His chip is good, but he still had an 8 foot par putt to make, which he did. On 8, he missses the green again, the chip this time isn't so good, but the putter pulls him out of another jam. AT 9 the drive positions him to attack, he does and this time the iron shot is good enough to run at bird. He sinks the 13 foot putt and drops to 7 under. Smith shoots 33 on the front.
<b>(-7)</b>
<b>Kevin Boroniec - (-6)</b>
Sinks an 18 foot downhill putt for birdie at 7. Misses the green on the short side at 8 and can't get up and down. A bad iron shot at 9 nearly leads to a second straight bogey, but he's able to chip and putt this time. 1 under on the front 9.
<b>(-6)</b>
<B>Group 2 - Holes 4 - 6</b>
<b>Rob Nielsen - (-6)</b>
Par Par Par - yes it's updated
<b>(-6)</b>
<b>Stan Gunner - (-7)</b>
Par, Then Gunner starts to make his move. A big drive on 5 lets him reach the green in two. No real shot at eagle, but a nice lag leave him only 3.5 feet for bird. A great putt from 26 feet on 6 leads to another birdie.
<b>(-9)</b>
<B>Group 3 - Holes 1 - 3</b>
<b>Brian Babson - (-7)</b>
Par Par Par - the only thing of interest was the impressive driving length.
<b>(-7)</b>
<b>AJ Tucker - (-7)</b>
Tuck starts with a bogey on 1, followed it up by hitting a drive out there with Babson <i>well in the general area...ok...it was about 20 yards short of Babson - but still real good for AJ</i> He converts that into a birdie. On 3, he tries to run with Babson off the tee again, and pulls it left into the thick stuff. Results in another bogey.
<b>(-6)</b>
<b>Marshall Herd - (-8)</b>

<b>Group 1 - Holes 10 - 12</b>
<b>Kyle Smith - (-7)</b>
3 putt bogey at 10. The 5 iron approach on 11 misses the green short, but Smith is able to get up and down for par. Par at 12.
<b>(-6)</b>
<b>Kevin Boroniec - (-6)</b>
The 6 iron from the middle of the fairway on 10 tucks in 5 feet away and the putt is made. Followed by 2 solid pars.
<b>(-7)</b>
<B>Group 2 - Holes 7 - 9</b>
<b>Rob Nielsen - (-6)</b>
Par, birdie - plays a 322 drive, 7 iron to 9 feet and sinks the putt. Drive is 328 on 9, wedge is only 8 feet and the putt is made. 2 birdies to close the front 9 put Nielsen at 2 under 33 on the front.
<b>(-8)</b>
<b>Stan Gunner - (-9)</b>
Gunner coming off back to back birds - pars 7 , but then gets another birdie at 8. Pars the 9th and finsihes with a 32. He's 10 under, could he really challenge the leaders with a good back 9?
<b>(-10)</b>
<B>Group 3 - Holes 4 - 6</b>
<b>Brian Babson - (-7)</b>
Babson gets 3 more pars including a clutch up and down on 6
<b>(-7)</b>
<b>AJ Tucker - (-6)</b>
The up and down run of AJ Tucker continues. After going bogey, birdie, bogey he goes birdie - 4 iron inside of 15 feet. Double bogey - don't ask. 22 foot putt goes on 6 for birdie. We're 6 holes in and Tucker has yet to record a par.
<b>(-6)</b>
<b>Marshall Herd - (-7)</b>
Par, 3 putt bogey at 5 and par.
<b>(-6)</b>
<B>Group 4 - Holes1 - 3</b>
<b>Kyle Kappe III - (-8)</b>
Par. Misses the green with the approach shot from 220 yards - then doesn't get up and down - Bogey. On number 3 he hits a drive that rolls up against a tree. His second shot is nearly impossible because he can't take a normal swing. The truck of the tree is right up next to the ball, roots are going to force an extreme decending blow and limbs overhanging are going to force him to keep the ball down - which is the exact opposite of a decending blow. He hits the ball backwards toward the tee, because he can't advance the ball down the fairway. The ball clips a limb and drops down into the rough. He's now clear of the tree - barely. His 3rd shot is about a 240 yarder out of the rough. He doesn't reach the green, chips and 2 putts for a 6. He's now 3 over after 3 holes and really scraping it around.
<b>(-5)</b>
<b>David Gonzalez - (-9)</b>
BOOM - 340+ yard drive at 1 - leaves a half wedge iron approach which stops 8 feet from the pin. Putt made for birdie. BOOM - 344 yard drive down the middle - a 9 iron and a putt later and Gonzo is already 2 under. On 3 he misses the fairway, barely gets on the green and has to two putt from almost 60 feet for par, but he does.
<b>(-11)</b>
<b>Colton Mayes - (-10)</b>
Par, Par Par - Mayes doen't match Gonzo's start, but he's striking the ball well early.

On the putting green:
Fad Braxton's a little nervous about playing in the final group on Sunday. His putting is a bit off during warmups--he's missing everything right.
Fad's new caddie, Jughandle, gives him a little tip about keeping his head still, and Fad knocks a few in. Then he steals a little peck from Destiny, the buxom blonde stripper, and heads off to the tee...

<b>Group 1 - Holes 13 - 15</b>
<b>Kyle Smith - (-6)</b>
3 solid pars
<b>(-6)</b>
<b>Kevin Boroniec - (-7)</b>
See Smith.
<b>(-7)</b>
<B>Group 2 - Holes 10 - 12</b>
<b>Rob Nielsen - (-8)</b>
Par, Par, and a poor drive on the par 5 - 12th appears to put Nielsen in a tough spot. However, Rob elects to swing hard and go over a tree blocking his line - an extremely risky shot because of the water to the right and high probability of hitting the tree. Nielsen plays the ball up in his stance and swings a 5 wood. He stays down well and gets the ball airborn quickly. The ball just clears the branches of the tree and bounces safely short of the green and rolls onto the front edge. An amazingly clutch shot gives him 2 putts from 48 feet for birdie - which he converts.
<b>(-9)</b>
<b>Stan Gunner - (-10)</b>
See Smith.
<b>(-10)</b>
<B>Group 3 - Holes 7 - 9</b>
<b>Brian Babson - (-7)</b>
On 7 Babson hits a great iron off the tee, but he misses a 7 foot birdie putt. Babson begins to look around in the crowd thinking he heard something about not being able to make a putt outside of his shadow. His caddy asks him whats wrong, Babson explains what he heard, and the caddy said, "Your nuts, I didn't hear anything." To which Babson responds by throwing a right cross and knocking the caddy out for approximately 2 minutes <i>(Those boxing instincts are really ingrained.)</i>. Par at 8. At 9, Babson decides he can take advantage of one of the shorter holes on the course. However, he overhits his drive and ends up in the rough. From there he can't get down in par and settles for his first bogey of the round. Babson is 1 over on the first 9.
<b>(-6)</b>
<b>AJ Tucker - (-6)</b>
Tuckers see-saw round sees it's first par on 7. That's followed by a bogey on 8 and another par at 9. He closes the front 2 over.
<b>(-5)</b>
<b>Marshall Herd - (-6)</b>
Pars 7. nearly bogeys 8, but is able to sink a slippery 17 footer downhill with a break of a couple feet to save par. The putter lets him down on 9, as he 3 putts from just outside 25 feet - missing a par putt of about 6 feet. Herd shoots 3 over on the front, and has yet to score birdie on a hole.
<b>(-5)</b>
<B>Group 4 - Holes4 - 6</b>
<b>Kyle Kappe III - (-5)</b>
Kappe struggled bad early going 3 over on 2 and 3. He settles down to par 4 and gets a very important birdie at 5. He was begining to look uncomfortable with his game - and overmatched by the bigger hitting Gonzo and Mayes. Pars 6.
<b>(-6)</b>
<b>David Gonzalez - (-11)</b>
A super 6 iron at 4 leads to another birdie for Gonzo. BOOM! another 330+ yard drive on 5 - he easily reaches the green in two and 2 putts for his 4th bird on the front. Par at 6 - even though the drive exceeded 330 again.
<b>(-13)</b>
<b>Colton Mayes - (-10)</b>
Mayes iron approach on 4 isn't as good as David's, but it didn't matter - the 24 foot putt rattled home for birdie. Mayes doesn't hit the drive as far at David on 5, but he almost gets home in two, has an easy chip that he runs up 4 feet from the hole and he sinks the birdie putt. Par at 6.
<b>(-12)</b>
<B>Leaders - Holes 1 - 3</b>
<b>Fad Braxton - (-11)</b>

<b>Shane Kormelink - (-12)</b>
A good drive on 1 is followed by a disappointing 8 iron approach which forces Shane to 2 putt from 37 feet for par. A birdie opportunity lost when he pushed the approach shot. On 2 Kormelink misses the fairway, but he scrambles to save par. He settles down on three and hits 3 good shots and taps in from 4 inches for par.
<b>(-12)</b>
<b>Alan Kelmay - (-12)</b>
Kelmay, a solid focused performer starts off missing the green with his 4 iron approach, and he can't get up and down from the short side. Pars 2 and 3.

<b>Group 1 - Holes 16 - 18</b>
<b>Kyle Smith - (-6)</b>
Only thing of interest is sinking a par putt of 19 feet on 17. Finishes with a 36 on the back and a round of 69
<b>(-6)</b>
<b>Kevin Boroniec - (-7)</b>
Bogey on 16 when he tries to be over aggressive on the approach and misses the green shortside. Par 17 and bogey's 18 when his birdie putt is hit too aggressively from 36 feet and the ball rolls almost 12 feet by the hole and he misses the comebacker. 36 on the back and an even par round.
<b>(-5)</b>
<B>Group 2 - Holes 13 - 15</b>

<b>Stan Gunner - (-10)</b>

<b>(-11)</b>
<B>Group 3 - Holes 10 - 12</b>
<b>Brian Babson - (-6)</b>
3 putts from about 18 feet for bogey on 10. Immediately following the missed par putt from 5 feet the caddy yells, "I heard it that time!" Babson decks him again for being condesending. Big drives on 11 and 12 are fruitless as Babson only manages pars.
<b>(-5)</b>
<b>AJ Tucker - (-5)</b>
Here we go again. A big drive for Tuck on 10 leads to birdie. Anyone want to guess what happens on 11. Misses the green with the approach shortside and bogeys. On 12 the 3rd shot iron nestles in 4 feet from the hole and the ups and down are on again.
<b>(-6)</b>
<b>Marshall Herd - (-5)</b>
Herd gets up and down on 10. A bad iron approch on 11 misses the green and this time Herd can't get up and down. Par at 12.
<b>(-4)</b>
<B>Group 4 - Holes7 - 9</b>
<b>Kyle Kappe III - (-6)</b>
Another birdie on the par 3 - 7th. The iron approch is 10 feet away pin high. On 8 he attempts to bust a drive and get himself in trouble by overswinging and hooking the ball into the deep rough - Bogey. Again Kappe's confidence appears to be on the edge. Pars 9. Shoots 2 over on the front 9.
<b>(-6)</b>
<b>David Gonzalez - (-13)</b>
Gonzo has finally figured out how to capitalize on his length - and he's parlayed that into a lead. Par at 7, big drive but only a par on 8, and a big drive again on 9. The wedge approach is 7 feet above the hole - Gonzo sinks the downhiller for birdie and he shoots an amazing 30 on the front 9.
<b>(-14)</b>
<b>Colton Mayes - (-12)</b>
Mayes - trying to keep pace with Gonzo pars 7 - two putts from 31 feet. Mayes then heats up (as he is known to do). Birdie at 8 - nice drive, approach and a putt from 14. Birdie at 9 - drive in the middle of the fairway - approach is inside of 10 and the putt is made. Mayes shoots 31 on the front and Gonzo and Mayes are playing lights out.
<b>(-14)</b>
<B>Leaders - Holes 4 - 6</b>
<b>Fad Braxton - (-11)</b>
"Lean on the putter son!" came the voice of Jughandle, Braxton's new caddy. The next putt from 22 drops. And the next putt from 18 falls - consecutive birdies. Par at 6.
<b>(-13)</b>
<b>Shane Kormelink - (-12)</b>
Kormelink, not to be out done sinks a putt from 17 on 4, blisters a drive (for him) on 5, reaches the green in two and two putts for birdie. Then perfectly possitions his drive on 6 and converts his 3 consecutive birdie.
<b>(-15)</b>
<b>Alan Kelmay - (-11)</b>
Double PARs the 4th. tee ball is wet - problem magnified by 3 putting the green. Par, Par. The 4th basically ended Kelmays chances as he falls way back in the pack due to 1 hole.

<B>Group 2 - Holes 16 - 18</b>
<b>Rob Nielsen - (-9)</b>
Par Par and once again Nielsen flirts with disaster on 18. He hits the ball at the flag, going over the water. I don't know if it was an effort to assure he didn't come up short, but Nielsen's ball airmailed the green and landed in the back bunker in front of the specator stands. A very long and delicate sand shot close to the edge of the green and the drop off into the water. Nielsen is horible in the sand and didn't execute the out well. He ends up with a double to close. A finishing hole that probably cost him several thousands of dollars. 1 over on the back and 1 under for the round.
<b>(-7)</b>
<b>Stan Gunner - (-11)</b>
Gunner, who has played awesome today was hoping to get to 13 under and see if the leaders could beat the number. He birdies 16, doesn't hit a real good approach on 17 and has to settle for par. 18 isn't typically a birdie hole, and it isn't birdied this time either. 33 on the back and a round of 65. Most of the golfers still on the course would take that score in a heartbeat. Gunner definately made some money with that round.
<b>(-12)</b>
<B>Group 3 - Holes 13 - 15</b>
<b>Brian Babson - (-5)</b>
Gets up and down for par on 13. The approach was long when he caught a flier out of the rough. Iron approach on 14 is tight after a huge drive leaves him just a 9 iron in. Babson has to sink a 6 foot putt for his first birdie of the round. He makes it...his caddy starts to congratulate him, then decides to keep his mouth shut. Babson starts to hit the caddy for not complementing him, but the caddy runs to the next tee and hopes Babson has cooled off by then. No wonder Babson is hated on tour. Par on 15.

<b>AJ Tucker - (-6)</b>

Gonzo's hot run comes to an end. In fact, his resourcefulness is tested. He gets up and down for pars on 10, 11 and 12. On 12 he hits an amazingly clutch flop shot over the bunker from the short side and sinks the 9 foot par putt. It's a disappointing par on the par 5 hole, but he'll take it.

<b>Colton Mayes - (-14)</b>

Iron shot on 7 is inside 8 feet - practically a gimme. A clutch par on 8, and a putt dropping from 30 feet on 9 is yet another birdie. Can his putt truly stay this good on the back 9? If so - you may be looking at your winner. Front 9 of 31.
<b>(-15)</b>
<b>Shane Kormelink - (-15)</b>

Kappe's lack of confidence compared to his hot partners finally couldn't be overcome with his focus. He bogeys 13 because he can't get up and down. Bogey's 14 when is drive is short and in the rough, and bogeys 15 when his iron approach is hit fat and finds a front bunker. 3 bogeys in 3 holes.
<b>(-2)</b>
<b>David Gonzalez - (-14)</b>
Huge drive on 13 but no birdie. Par at 14. Great iron on 15 gives him a run at birdie from 11 feet. The ball is well struck but it lips out and he settles for par. That one could hurt come the end of the day.
<b>(-14)</b>
<b>Colton Mayes - (-14)</b>
Mayes goes Par, Par and a great iron gives him a run at birdie on 15. The 18 footer uphill with a slight right to left break comes up just short. Like Gonzo - Mayes may be kicking himself for missing that putt.
<b>(-14)</b>
<B>Leaders - Holes 10 - 12</b>
<b>Fad Braxton - (-15)</b>
Great iron shot on 10 out of the rough gets Braxton on the green and he 2 putts from 37 for par. Par at 11. Sinks a 22 footer on 12 for another birdie. The crowd is really going nuts for FAD right now.
<b>(-16)</b>
<b>Shane Kormelink - (-16)</b>
Kormelink - again not to be outdone. Par Par. Good drive, layup - chip to within 6 feet and it's a ho-hum birdie that keeps him 1 up on Braxton.
<b>(-17)</b>
<b>Alan Kelmay - (-5)</b>
Kelmay stops the bleeding a little by getting birdie on 11.

I think I'm going to change my nickname from "Thundering" to "The Shark" after posting a collapse only Greg Norman could appreciate.

And down the stretch they come!
Good to see one of the tour's hard luck crew having a sweet run. I think Babson's intangibles will usually keep him around, but his inconsistency and his putting will ensure he won't make a run at a title.

<B>Group 4 - Holes 1 6 - 18</b>
<b>Kyle Kappe III - (-2)</b>
Rebounds with a pride birdie on 16. Then just misses a birdie putt on 18 from 24 feet. Kappe shoots 38 on the back and 75 on the day.
<b>(-3)</b>
<b>David Gonzalez - (-14)</b>
Big drive at 16. Iron approach doesn't check up and he has a birdie putt run from 27 feet, which he - misses. Iron on 17 is in the middle of the green, pulled slightly. The birdie putt is again around 25 feet - comes up short. Number 18 - good drive, iron is pushed right (avioding water) 2 putts from 44 feet. Gonzo closes with an overall score of 65, but he was unable to convert any birds on the back 9.
<b>(-14)</b>
<b>Colton Mayes - (-14)</b>
Mayes tee ball on 16 is hit right at 300 yards. The 145 yard 8 iron is within 9 feet and the putt is made for birdie. If he can get 1 more birdie the pressure will really be on Braxton and Kormelink with difficult closing holes in front of them. Mayes tee ball on 17 stops 16 feet from the hole. The putt is hit, but the break is under played an the ball rolls beneath the hole. On 18 the drive misses the fairway and pretty much closes his chances at birdie. He elects to hit to the front right of the green. Then he's able to two putt from 55 feet to save par. Mayes shoots 34 on the back and a 65 for the round. Will 15 under be enough? Braxon and Kormelink have 6 holes to play and through 3 rounds those 6 holes have been played slightly over par by the field.
<b>(-15)</b>
<B>Leaders - Holes 13 - 15</b>
<b>Fad Braxton - (-16)</b>
Par, Par, on 15 Braxton's drive is short leaving him almost 200 yards in. Fad is a great iron player, but that is asking a lot. His ball is pushed and it end up in the rough to the right of the green. He isn't real good with his short game and it shows. The chip hits short of the green and barely trickles out of the long grass. The par putt is still over 30 feet and even this "<b><i>Puttmaster</b></i> can't convert it. A costly, costly bogey.
<b>(-15)</b>
<b>Shane Kormelink - (-17)</b>
With a 1 stroke lead heading into 13 Shane decided to shoot for fairways and greens. It paid off with 3 pars.
<b>(-17)</b>
<b>Alan Kelmay - (-6)</b>
Par Par Bogey.

<B>Leaders - Holes 16 - 18</b>
<b>Fad Braxton - (-15)</b>
A costly bogey on 15 is followed by Braxton putting pressure on himself trying to rebound. His approach at 16 appears to be right at the flag, but it's actuall about 6 feet left. That doesn't sound like alot, and it isn't but it is enough to hit the left bank of the green and have the ball bounce into the thick rough. He isn't able to get up and down, and the possible exciting finish looks like a distance memory. Kormelink (who pars the hole by the way) opens a 3 stroke lead on Braxton and he has 2 strokes on Mayes who's in the clubhouse. Braxton pars 17 then giving it one last gasp - sinks a 36 foot putt on 18 for birdie. Maybe Kormy will go bogey bogey or double the final hole and we'll have a 3 way playoff.
<b>(-15)</b>
<b>Shane Kormelink - (-17)</b>
Par at 16 - which we knew already. Iron approach on 17 rolls up only 3 feet from the pin - Birdie and probably the win. Baring a huge collapse on 18. Tee ball on 18 is in the middle of the fairway, but it isn't long. He elects to layup short right. Chips up and 2 putts for bogey. It's an ultraconservative play, but with a 3 stroke lead, he could afford to drop one. With the pressure on Kormy shoots a 65. Hard to catch someone who does that.
<b>(-17)</b>
<b>Alan Kelmay - (-5)</b>
Kelmay builds some confidence for August going Birdie Birdie. Then on 18 he gets a little too aggressive firing at the pin from almost 200 yards. He ends up wet, but gets up and down for bogey.

Nice Tourney, Good to see some new people at the top. I'm really surprised by all the mid 60's scores. The Clutch and Closer attributes really helped a bunch in this one.

In the clubhouse, as he drinks a scotch on the rocks, Braxton is a little despondent over his late-round mini-collapse. He guesses he just put too much pressure on himself. Destiny comes over to remind him that he's got nothing to worry about. After all, he did just shoot 68-63-68-66 (265) at a course he had no business playing well on!
As Fad agrees, she takes his hand and leads him out of the bar, saying, "Let's spend some of that money you just earned..."

Nice! At least I got a consolation prize. I was sure after reading about all of Gonzalez's huge drives that I was gonna blow that one too. I could use a drink after this pitiful last round performance too.

Gonzo hit great drives, but it was just that he turned his into birdies you didn't. :D
Give Butcher a break, he's a rookie with this golf stuff. Let's see how some of these veterans would fare in a boxing ring with him. :)
Great job on another tourney Breeze.
