Master And Commander winning the Best Picture Oscar is about as likely as Euro Trip winning it next year.

Yeah..first of all, the Kilrathi stunk. They were this supposed onmipresent threat, but only appeared near jump points and in asteroid fields. Further, you could sit right behind their cruisers and fire volley after volley, and never get hit by their defenses.

The voice synch was awfull as well. Yeah, ok, good, they added the voice effects in an add-on, but it really wasn't worth it. Not much there.

It was good for it's time, but not nearly Oscar worthy.

Still, I give Wing Commander a solid thumbs up.

And I think Ginger Lynn definitely deserves the best supporting actress award. Her work was magnificent!

I have the excuse that I'm working on a project due for class tomorrow. Then again, Erica isn't an awards show person either so I guess it's not much of an issue. If she wanted to watch it, so be it. Thankfully, I would not have to. We have a "I won't make you watch sports if you don't make me watch chick flicks" kindof agreement. Tho, I got her into baseball last year so she'll watch the Royals of her own accord :)

Well, I'll be spending the next 2 days hanging out with my girlfriend's friends and then the next 3 with my family... so I need all the alone time I can get.

But hey, my birthday is Thursday, so the gifts make up for my lack of alone time next week.

Forrest Gump was a pretty damned good movie. It won in a year where I felt any of the nominees could have won without disappointing. I wasn't rooting for it, but come on. It was a pretty innovative and entertaining film, and does not deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as the biggest piece of crap to ever win an Oscar.

This year I guess I was pulling for the LoTR nominees, and Johnny Depp for Best Actor.
Oh well I guess you can't have everything, but the Return of the King getting a clean sweep is a nice thing.

While I agree that Forrest Gump was not a bad movie, it is worth noting now that The Shawshank Redemption was also nominated for Best Picture that year if I'm not mistaken. It was only a small movie that tanked at the box office at the time, but has since grown to be a tremendous favorite. I think it'll stand the test of time more than Gump

Never will. Combine Hanks, the innovation of the story telling. the award and the subject matter and you have a film with tremendous staying power regardless of personal taste...

Perhaps Shawshank was the better pure film but Gump was far more memorable and lasting...

I don't know. I look at on a mainstream level. Everyone knows Gump, who played him, the story, ect. Ask someone what was Robbins name in the film and I doubt as many know it. Heck you mention shrimp and you get the whole fried shrimp, boiled shrimp...

I'm not arguing the merits of the films only the mainstream "life"...I don't have the numbers but I would guess Gump has sold vastly more VHS and DVD copies.

Well, Gump definitely wins on a mainstream level. But for those who saw Shawshank, it's universally regarded as an incredibly great movie.

I don't know about all this "mainstream" talk. Both Gump and Shawshank rely on a pretty mainstream appeal (with Shawshank winning that all time greatest movie poll thing). And Shawshank is far from "universally regarded as an incredibly great movie." The reviews of the movie when it first came out were pretty good, but there was a lot of criticism of the plastic thin characters that are all good or evil (a very common criticism of all Steven King story based movies). I like Shawhank despite its shortcomings (I also think Gump is pretty good), but I don't think either movie is anything but "mainstream."

rkmsuf
03-01-2004, 02:57 PM
that was my only point and that mainstream appeal will carry a longer lasting appeal in total...

Considering that Shawshank is on TV every third Thursday, I'm not sure you can really use VHS/DVD sales as any measure of popularity. It'd be like comparing Animal House to It's a Wonderful Life.

(DISCLAIMER: Both Animal House and It's a Wonderful Life have made impacts in their own way and have their own following, but to compare AH to IaWL in terms of filmmaking/best movie/greatness etc. is IMO pure folly)

Yeah and Kindergarden Cop seems to be on every other weekend too.

I'm not comparing greatness only lasting appeal. Gump on once or twice a year on the network probably pulls more cash than the Shawshank cable deal anyway...

Another trick question: When was the War of 1812 fought? It may have began as a conflict in 1812, but congress did not officially declare war until 1814! So when is a war not a war?

Another error I caught on one of the first Millionaire shows. Regis asked what was the first 'professional' baseball team Babe Ruth ever played for. The contestant answered 'Boston Red Sox" and was pronounced right. Actually he was WRONG! The first 'professional' baseball team Ruth ever played for was the team that signed him, the Baltimore Orioles, which were at the time a minor league farm team of the Red Sox. "Professional' being the key phrase, as it means 'getting paid', the Red Sox being the first MAJOR league team Ruth was on.

Ever notice how those women who get on TV the day after the Oscar to talk about what everyone is wearing are always really underwhelming. It's like "WTF do we care what you think?!"

That 'snappy tune' is called 'Hail to the Chief", and is played for the President.
